The first topic I read this week is this one about late salary
payment by the Federal government.

What a terrible and horrible language to start a week with.
From the topic right to the end, rubbish.

See the headers for example.
Re: Have Anybody Receive Salary Yet..federal Workers Only
It shoud be, Has anybody received salary yet?

Unless this person is a cleaner in an office, he or she does not deserve
any salary in any Federal set up.

And do not give me the crap that language does not matter.

There is a minimum standard and this guy doesnt seem to have it.

Again, was the moderator sleeping?

Come on, even when mods post stuff on the front page (and adjust the headline), you can see a lot of mistakes.

^^^Fuke,
I agree with you, Nairaland is awash with substandard English.
I don't think the Mods are to blame.
If more posters take take time off to improve their language abilities,
Nairaland will be more refreshing.

1. You mean grammar not language
2. Language as used in that context is a continuous noun and you cannot use "a" with it. ie, you should have said "What a terrible and horrible language grammar"

So you see, you are part of the problem.

Do not jubilate too soon.

The 'pfof' cannot be serious.
He is only dancing to the gallery.

This is allowed, especially if you are just
green from the university and you are here to
impress the opposite sex.

In all honesty, you can interchange both words.

The sentence is perfect.

See the attached.

Ginger is the second grammar checker
on the net after grammarly and it says
nothing is wrong wth it.

lol.

That is because the software cannot read your intended meaning and therefore cannot detect your first mistake, which is that you used "language" in place of grammar.

The real meaning of what you typed into the system there, is that a particular language (such as english or french or yoruba or igbo), is a terrible and horrible thing to start the week with. "Language" in this context is a perfectly discrete item and you can use "a" with it, since there are many individual languages.

Now, to further demonstrate the errors you are making, go ahead and enter the same sentence into the software but replace language with grammar.

Be kind enough to post the results here where your done.

'Prof'

You get plenty time o

I am sure you are not saying the software is wrong.

This software used all over the word says the sentence
is OK and you went bla bla again.

Me, I tire o. Go to Oxford and teach English.

'Prof'

Let us close this.

For academic purpose,I have taken your challenge
and replaced lanuage with grammar.

Attached is what I got.

Again, it says the sentence is OK.

My intention was not to down-talk anbody.
Rather,I love to see Nairaland at the level of
forums like Warrior and Blackhat.

Young ones should come here and pick some
tricks in English rather than getting polluted.

I hope this settles it.

Best of luck

Here is a screenshot that shows you just how "great" the software you are depending upon is.

Is what i typed into it proper grammar? Yet it says there are no problems or errors with it.

Like i said, you think you are doing me but the joke is on you. Better forget about the young ones. You yourself need to de-pollute your grammar!

Ok ‘Prof’’

Let us take this further.

The software did not fault your sentence because it treated the word ‘ways ‘ as a group.
In that case, it will OK the sentence.

Now, because the software suspected deficiency in the sentence, it suggested an alternative.

Please see line three of the attachments, you will see where it suggests alternatives and the alternative given.

In the two examples I used earlier, it did not suggest alternatives. That is the difference.

Be rest assured dear 'prof', my English grammar is Ok, not perfect but not horrible.

WAEC said so (A3 1971) and Ezine articles too.(Expert Author)

So long.

1971? Wow. Baba, with all due respect, you are wrong.

1. The only deficiency spotted by that software was the fact that you started the sentence with a small letter instead of capital letter. The fact is that the software itself reported back that there was no error, whereas there was a glaring and obvious error. The alternatives provided are inconsequential, once it has claimed there are no errors.

If i didn't know better and i was using this software, that is how i may have used it's recommendation in a document and embarrassed myself.

2. Why on would it treat "ways" as a group? A group of what? The sentence was terribly wrong and the software claimed it was right. Period. That software therefore cannot be relied upon.

3. The software offering alternatives is not because it suspects anything is wrong. The attached is what i got when i entered a copy of the exact same text i found when i first logged on to the grammar checker page of the website (http://www.gingersoftware.com/grammarcheck#.V8WpZ_mLTIU). Their very own example statement which is undoubtedly grammatically sound, still prompted loads of alternative statements.
