The Nigerian federal government says it wants N90 from every N1,000 worth of airtime citizens buy for their phones. When you add this to the N50 "stamp duty" bank customers are now charged for every deposit made into their accounts and the recent conscienceless petrol price hike that has made life a living hell for the poor in Nigeria there is little doubt that this government is institutionalizing reverse Robin Hoodism, which I define as robing the poor to enrich the rich. As a recent Wall Street Journal article pointed out, "Seventy percent of the national treasury is spent on the salaries and benefits of government officials, who make upwards of $2 million a year". For comparison, US presidents make $400,000 a year. So, in spite of the current economic crunch, the political elite haven't give up an inch of their enormous wages and allowances. The problem with Nigerians is that we will always complain and go back to our holes, no tangeable actions to call the government to order and this government is making head away with their hash policies, may be since the north has not make any protest,since it is '' their own'' other region seem technically powerless. The question would Nigerians take all these hash from say GEJ or administration of any other region apart from the North ? .The earlier we tell ourselves the honest truth, the faster the country will make progress. |
