One of the reason why we could be in a financial mess today is because many people do not understand the difference between currency and money. Currency is a medium of exchange, it’s a unit of account, it’s portable, durable, divisible and fungible; fungible means that each unit is the same as the other unit (10 naira in my pocket is the same value as 10 naira in your pocket). Money is all of those things but it’s also a stored value over a long period of time. That means it can maintain a certain stability of its value and its purchasing power over a very long period of time and should be hardly affected by inflation or devaluation, but currency is volatile and always loses it purchasing power over time. Many people cannot make out this difference; even some financial planners, bankers, accountants don’t understand the real difference between currency and money and this could lead to some financial mess and crisis.
