GCE EXAMS: Protest looms as students, parents call for postponement by zibi5: 7:10am On Sep 05, 2016
The West African Examination Council has said that it will September 10, relocate the 1,742 candidates sitting for the ongoing November/December West African Senior School Certificate examination in Edo State to Ondo and Delta states.
The council, however, said that parents and guardians of the candidates would bear all related cost arising from the development.
The Public Relations Officer, WAEC, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, in an exclusive interview with our correspondent on Thursday, said the development became necessary, as the council would not shift the examination date to prevent leakages.
While candidates from Auchi and Benin areas would sit for the examination at Ore, Ondo State, Ojijeogu said other candidates from Ekpoma and Abudu would be relocated to Agbor , Delta State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission fixed the Edo governorship poll for September 10, the same day that candidates are expected to sit for Mathematics 1and 2.
The council last week said that it could not shift the examination date, as the paper would be written across five countries, including Nigeria.
According to the council, shifting the examination date can result in leakages.
But, on Thursday, Ojijeogu said, “We have agreed to relocate the affected candidates. About 1,742 candidates are affected and the majority of them are in Auchi and Benin. We have found centres in those places to accommodate them.
“However, the parents will have to bear the cost of relocation because this is an unexpected development.
We are known for excellence and we will do our best to ensure that it is hitch-free. If we do not do this, it means that the candidates will not be able to sit for Mathematics, a core subject.”
