She looked at her phone and sighed. "I have to go to Nigeria. It's possible that he is dating someone else and I am now a long distant side chick",she said to herself .

         She thought of calling Amoge to ask her if Jason was dating someone else but she didn't want to appear insecure toher.Besides they were still working on getting their friendship back on track.

    Lola picked up her laptop and booked a flight that would take her to Lagos in a couple of weeks.She didn't mind spending only a few days in Nigeria provided she fixed the problems in her relationship with Jason.
She became excited at the thought of paying him a surprise visit.

"I hate long distance relationships "she said to herself and printed out her ticket.The days went by so fast Jason woke up early on Saturday morning to go and play tennis at the recreational centre close to his house.

A few minutes after he got there, Olivia arrived as well. She wore a white fitted tshirt on a short white pleated skirt which showed off her straight, long model legs.


She got to the tennis court to meet Jason. "Are you ready to get beaten by a lady ?"she said to him excitedly ."Let's see your skills, don't cry when the tennis pro trashes you "he said with a smile.

They had a light breakfast after playing tennis while they discussed. Olivia paused for a minute and said to him" these past few months have been great.I enjoy our friendship".She looked at him in a shy manner.

" I must admit that I enjoy your company as well".As he was trying to say what was on his mind, his phone rang.Hi Jason",Arinze said over the phone.


" Please I need you to rush to the house quickly. Amoge sent me a text saying that she has a fever and severe abdominal cramps.I am not in Lagos at the moment and I don't want to scare my parents because of the pregnancy. Can you please take her to the hospital? I will return as soon as possible". " Sure 'bro' " he replied.

"I need to leave now, Amoge needs help urgently "she said to Olivia." I will come with you "she said to him anxiously . "Okay but I have to stop by the house briefly to change into something clean" he said to her. "Cool" she replied .


Jason quickly went into his house to get dressed while Olivia waited for him in her car.She drove behind him when he got into his car.

They got to Amoge's house and Jason headed to the door of the house.Jason quickly pressed the door bell. He tried calling her but he saw Lola's incoming calls.

He remembered that he forgot to call Lola back when he saw her missed calls after playing tennis." Anyway I will call her later , let me handle this emergency first "he said to himself.

Olivia stood beside Jason at the front door waiting for the door to be opened.The door opened and she saw them standing before her. She couldn't believe her eyes. Her countenance fell.

"Who is this lady he came with to Amoge's house" she wondered ." What are you doing here Lola? "
Jason asked angrily as he pulled her aside briefly to a corner.

"Maybe if you picked up my calls, you would have known that I just came into Lagos " , she replied sarcastically.

"I have been busy sorry . Where's Amoge? ", he asked. "Who is that lady you came with " she asked with curiosity. "A friend", he replied hastily and said" tell Amoge that I am here to take her to the hospital".

Amoge came to the living room. She greeted the guests in pains . Olivia said "get well soon dear , don't worry the doctors will take care of you .I will come and see you later ".

She left Amoge's house because she wasn't comfortable with the body language of Jason and the strange lady who opened the door for them.


Amoge was finally taken to her hospital . A doctor examined her and requested for some laboratory tests and an obstetric scan .Arinze called regularly to monitor her progress. His last call was to inform them that he was close to Lagos from Ibadan.

She was admitted for proper medical care and follow up. The blood results revealed severe malaria and mild anaemia. Amoge was worried. She wondered how she got bitten by so many mosquitoes.
Arinze got to the hospital .He quickly went to the private ward where she was receiving treatment.

Amoge smiled as soon as she saw him.He sat by her bedside. "How are you feeling now he asked?" I will be fine, though I still need to have a scan done" she replied.

Arinze thanked Jason for his help."You didn't tell me that Lola is around "he said to him as he greeted Lola. "Sorry for to him as he greeted Lola. "Sorry for stressing you guys ". Arinze said to Lola and Jason ."It's no stress at all", they replied.


The nurse came to inform Amoge that it was time for the scan.Jason and Lola took their leave and promised to visit again. Arinze held Amoge's hand as they went to the scan room.

There was silence as the doctor scanned Amoge. Arinze tried to hide his anxiety by smiling intermittently at his wife.Finally,the doctor said to them." The babies are fine".Amoge looked at the doctor with surprise. "Did you say babies" Arinze asked.

"Yes sir , your wife is pregnant with a set of twins" , he said to them . "Would you like to hear their heart beats" , he asked." Sure!" they said excitedly. "I assume you also want to know the gender of the babies".

Arinze looked at Amoge. Amoge shook her heard in disapproval. "No I want it to be a surprise".Arinze was disappointed but said doc "I guess we'll have to wait till they are delivered ".

The ride back to Jason's house was unusually quiet.Jason expected Lola to ask a million questions about the strange woman or possibly query him about their issues.

The stolen glances at her revealed Lola looking out of the car window in silence. When he wanted to break the silence by asking about her flight, there was no response. She was sleeping like a baby.

He looked at her briefly with the corner of his eyes and placed his right hand on her left hand.He knew that he loved Lola,he never stopped loving her but he wondered if love was enough to make their relationship work.

He allowed her sleep till they got to his house. They both went inside and she quickly freshened up and laid on his bed. She was so tired that she slept off almost immediately.


She was woken up by the aroma of something delicious coming from the kitchen. As she tried getting up from the bed,Jason came into the room with a tray containing a plate of noodles.

Jason's noodles could wake a dead man up.He had a special way of preparing it.The shrimps, carrots, green pepper, tomatoes, pepper and onions which he normally stir fries before mixing with the noodles made it so delicious.


Lola finished the food in a heart beat . "Won't you eat yours ? "she asked ."I have eaten already" he replied.

She went to wash the dishes in the kitchen. While she was cleaning up the kitchen, Jason came to join her.

She didn't say a word to him till she finished what she was doing then she went to the living room. Jason followed her and sat beside her.

Lola turned to face him. "Sweetie, who was that lady who accompanied you to Amoge's house" she asked with a fake smile on her face.

" Are we still on this matter?" he replied with a mischievous smile on his face." She is just a friend" he said ."Really! "She replied.

"Okay let me rephrase the question " she replied ."Jason, who's that lady to you?,Lola asked with a frown on her face.
"She is just a friend. Stop asking me such questions please" , he replied.

Lola stood up in anger and said" so this is the person responsible for your coldness towards me. You are always too busy for me , you end my calls abruptly and forget to call back. We don't even talk more than 10 minutes a day nowadays".

" Are you seriously blaming me for what happened to us.Incase you have forgotten Lola, you lied to me about stealing my sister in law; Amoge from her ex. Gosh! you even denied them in my presence.Who does that? " he replied with irritation.

"Jason I apologised to you a million times. Don't you make mistakes?. So you started dating someone else to punish me? " She asked angrily.

"You are the one making premature conclusions" he retorted bluntly. "We hang out once in a while that's all" he said .

"So why did you bring her to Amoge's house? " , Lola asked . "Olivia is her friend " he shouted.
" Oh! her name is even Olivia.Tell me! do you go around bringing other random friend's of Amoge to her house. Did she ask you to gather her friends for her?" ,she asked angrily.

"You are lying to me Jason. I can even see it in your eyes" she said to him .

" What would I gain by lying my dear.Yes I was angry with you for a while as expected, but I never cheated on you.Yes !she likes me but I don't see her that way.I see her as a hangout buddy" he said to her with a soft voice .

Jason stood before Lola .He put his arms around her shoulders and drew her closer to him.

"It is you that I love"."Look at me Lola!. She hesitated initially but eventually gave in .

He looked into Lola's eyes and said "It is you that thrills my heart. It is you that makes my day complete. I have been working on a big project for a month now which I explained to you but I guess you don't believe me"

"I am sorry" she said as she quickly cleaned the tears running down her cheeks.

"Every relationship has its ups and downs dear.Ours is still a work in progress. Our love is like fireworks babe, it's not ordinary ",he said to her.

" I am willing to make us work" she said to him. "Even if it means relocating before the year runs out. I am actually tired of living abroad", Lola said .

Nicky finished her lectures for the day and walked towards the library. She had some tests coming up soon that she had to study for .She got to the library and picked a secluded section to study.

    Nicky loved studying. She was considered the nerd of her family and thankfully, her hardwork paid off as she graduated with a first class from the university.

    She arranged her study materials before her and got down to business. After an hour of studying she went to the book shelves to get a textbook.


On her way back to her seat,  she noticed that someone else had joined her reading table.She saw only a pile of books opposite hers without the person who kept them on the table.

"So much for reading alone", she said to herself and sat down. She was engrossed with what she was studying that she didn't notice when the owner of the books came to seat in front of her.

"Hi Nicky", a male voice said to her. "Hi William,what are you doing here?",she asked with a low voice. "  I came to study just like you" ,he replied.

They both studied for some hours. When Nicky became tired and hungry, she packed her books." Good night" she said to William . "Are you leaving now?Goodnight dear! " he replied and  she left him in the library and went to  her hostel.

Nicky had her shower and enjoyed her dinner. As she relaxed to watch her favourite TV series, her phone rang.

Hi , it's me William , the voice said.

Hello, please which William? , she asked politely.


"Have you forgotten me already? .We have met thrice already. We just met again at the library this evening"he said .

"Oh William! she said .I am sorry. Are you still at the library? , she asked.


"No ,I am on my way home. I just called to know if you got home safely", he replied. "I did , thank you ",Nicky said to him.

They discussed about her school work, her living experience so far in Aberdeen as well as his work and his on line master's programme.


" I don't believe we have been talking for 2 hours. Haven't you reached home?Nicky asked .

"Really! I have dear but I am still in the car" he replied . "Okay I have to go now because I have an early lecture tomorrow" she said to him .

" Can I call you tomorrow?" he asked with a husky voice . "Sure ,you can"she replied and they said goodbye to each other.

Nicky was woken up early in the morning by her phone which was ringing. She reluctantly picked it up with sleepy eyes .

"Hello , good morning "she said with a low voice.

"Hi ,are you awake?" , the male voice  asked .

"Ehmm, I am not even sure "she replied with a sleepy

"I am sure you don't know who is speaking. Wake up Nicky. You need to prepare for your lecture" William said to her .


The thought of  going late to school made her get out of bed quickly."Thanks for waking me up William. I hope you slept well?. Did you sleep at all? , she asked.

"I am getting ready to go for my early morning run.Just thought that I should wake you up so that you don't over sleep" ,he replied.

"Thanks dear.I have to go now. Have a great day: , she said and ended the call.


While Nicky got dressed for school, thoughts of William flooded her mind.She didn't understand why he was being so friendly towards her .Although she didn't mind having him as a friend  because he seemed nice.

   Two days went by so fast. Nicky was busy with school work. She fought so hard to fight the urge to call William when she didn't hear from him. "What did I do to scare him away ?she asked herself. I don't want him to think I am desperate",she said to herself.

  She eventually lost the internal battle and decided to send him a text.She typed a text message  which read" i hope you are okay? ".

Just as she was about to press the send button, William's call came in.

  " Hi Nicky", he said to her. "Hi William" she replied without trying to sound excited by his call.



"You didn't even check up on me these past few days" he said in a playful manner.

"I am sorry, I have been so busy, I hope you are okay though? "She replied .


"I had a bad flu but I feel better now ", he replied. "You will have to make it up to me" he said to Nicky with a soft voice.


She laughed and said" how Mr William ? "She asked.

"I have a friend whose baby will be christened this  sunday,can you accompany me to the event?" , he asked.

"What a coincidence!, it's my birthday as well " she said excitedly.

"That's nice! We'll celebrate together then.Have a great day dear" he said.

"You too "she replied and ended the call.

   
   Nicky was woken up by a knock on her door on Sunday morning. It was a delivery man who handed her a bouquet of fresh flowers and a gift box.

    She read the card attached to the flower. "Happy birthday dear!See you by 10am,".
Nicky was overwhelmed by the love she received so far from friends and family.

   She ate breakfast and wore her plain coulored  kimono jacket on a v neck flower print jump suit.

At exactly 10am, she heard a knock on her door. She went to see if it was William. She opened the door to see him standing before her. Her heart raced at the sight of him. He looked so good in his white short sleeved fitted traditional attire.

He looked at her for some seconds without uttering a word. Nicky felt uncomfortable but still managed to wave her hand in front of his face to get his attention.

" You are beautiful Nicky "he said with a smile. "I got a gift for you" William said to her ."Another one?, you didn't even give me a chance to thank you for the beautiful bouquet of flowers and box of chocolates you sent earlier, thanks a lot "she replied .


She invited him into her room." Turn around" he said to her. Nicky obeyed and turned around .

He brought out a necklace from a small jewelry box .William came closer to her and gently pushed her long braids away from her smooth chocolate coloured neck.

They eventually went to the church for the christening and afterwards , they all went to his friend's house for a small reception.

They had fun socialising with friends and eating the delicious meals served.
After a while, William whispered into her ears excitedly ," Let's leave" .

Nicky happily obliged .He gave the parents of the baby a gift for their child and left with Nicky.

     "Where are we going to"?She asked William with curiosity.

" I remember you said that you have not really explored Aberdeen. Let's go and see a castle " he replied .


He took her to one of the magnificent castles in Aberdeen . Nicky was as excited as a little girl because she had never been to  one before .A tour guide showed them all the rooms and gave a little history of the castle as they explored the building.


  They had a nice time .When the tour was over, they got into his car and he drove off.

They eventually got to Nicky's hostel. "Wow!  that was fast "she said.
"Time flies by so fast when you are having fun" , he replied .

"Thank you so much for a beautiful day.I enjoyed my birthday" she said as she looked into his eyes.

"I should be the one saying thanks dear" , he said to her .
He held her soft hands and faced her . William  looked at her beautiful nude made up face with admiration.


"I have not been this happy in a really long while. Thank you for being a friend to me" he said while holding her gaze with his eyes.

"Aaaaw,that's sweet", she said and gave him a hug. William pecked her fore head gently and whispered good night into Nicky's ears.

He walked her to her room and she went inside after thanking him again for a fun day.

Nicky had a hot shower and wore her night gown.She laid down on her bed as she went through her birthday messages on the Internet.


She got a text alert on her phone. Nicky hurriedly read it when she saw that the sender was William.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"Reading my numerous birthday messages , how about you? " she replied.

"Thinking about someone "he said .

"Who's the lucky girl she replied with a frown on her face as she typed the message.

"Nicky Okafor" he replied her

"Laugh out loud  (lol)"she said to him with a smile on her face .

"Don't laugh love,you have managed to sweep this dude off his feet ", William replied.

Nicky was both excited and scared.She had never really been in a serious relationship before. She didn't want to make a hasty decision ,so she just replied with a text which read;

"Goodnight dear, it was a great day".

William felt disappointed. He lost the love of his life by being too slow and laid back .He knew that he took Amoge for granted. William thought about the past and all the great times he shared with Amoge.

He didn't think that he would find some one that he would be so attracted to again. "I won't make another costly mistake twice in my life time", he said to himself.

"It's possible that she is dating someone else but I don't believe that who ever it is ,will ever love her as much as I do" , he said to himself.


Nicky woke up the following morning refreshed.She had an afternoon lecture so she decided to visit her friend Ada in the morning.

Ada welcomed her into the house .Nicky joined her in the kitchen as she made Egwusi soup.

Where did you go to yesterday madam,we could have hung out yesterday, Ada said.


"Oh ! I went out with somebody",she replied with a mischievous smile on her face.

"Out with it girl!you owe me gist",she said to Nicky.

Nicky gave her a brief summary of how William made her day special .

"Well I don't really know him that well but I could ask my brother what kind of guy he is for you.Nicky just be careful anyway, some of these Nigerian guys have girlfriends or wives they left back home.I don't think he is a shady guy though but be smart" she said to her.


"Madam adviser, don't take life too seriously. We have only gone out once" she said to Ada.

"That's how it starts my dear .Anyway I have booked your chief bridesmaid position just in case it works out" ,she replied jokingly.

Nicky stayed with her friend for a while and went for her lectures. She decided to go to the shop close to her hostel  to pick up a few toiletries. On her way back, she thought of William. She wondered if he was hurt by her last text message.Nicky decided to give him a call.

"Hi William, how are you doing? ", she asked.

"Hi dear, I had to leave work early today because I still feel ill.I guess I  shouldn't have stressed myself yesterday "he replied .

"Sorry dear! , I am on my way to your house" she said to him.

"Okay, see you soon", he replied.

Nicky quickly dropped the items she bought in her room and went to his house.

She called him when she got to his house and he opened the door.

"I didn't think you were serious about coming over" he said to her with a smile on his face.

Nicky hugged him and they both went inside.

"You are having a fever "she said with a loud voice,"have you taken any drug for it?"she asked.

"My fever medication is finished. I was actually trying to get some strength to go to a pharmacy and buy some more",he replied with a low voice.


"Okay come and lie down on the sofa. I will go and buy some drugs for you. It's probably a bad viral infection" she said to him.

Nicky  hurriedly walked down to the pharmacy down the street and bought some drugs for the fever , headache and stuffy nose.

She gave him the drugs.Tepid sponged him because his body was so hot and made some sandwiches for him .

The effect of the drug began to kick in, William became drowsy and his temperature became cooler.


"  I think you should go into your room and sleep" ,  Nicky said to him.

She followed him into his room and propped his pillows up so that he could lie down comfortably.

"Goodnight dear", she said to him.

She didn't wait for a reply because he was fast asleep.

Nicky left his room and went to his kitchen. She cleaned up both kitchen and living room.

She went through his refrigerator/ freezer and decided to prepare a small pot of jollof rice and chicken for him so that he would have something to eat later.

Nicky went to her room.She laid down on her bed thinking of William.

"I hope the fever won't return" she said to herself.

"What am I doing Nicky? Why am I missing him?" , she asked herself.

She picked up her book to study and eventually slept in the process because she was very tired.

She woke up the following morning to see a missed call from William and a text which read;


"Every encounter with you makes me love you more. I feel better today. I almost finished the whole pot of delicious jollof rice. Thanks dear".

Nicky smiled like a Cheshire cat as she read it. She knew deep down, that she was also falling in love with him.

She heard a knock on her door. Nicky dropped the phone on her reading table and went to see who was knocking.

She opened the door and saw him standing before her.

"I had to come and see you" he said with a soft voice.

Nicky's eyes lit up with surprise. "Come inside " she said to him.

"Please sit down and make yourself comfortable, my first lecture is later in the day" she said to William.

They talked for a while and William said to her "I will wait for you for as long as it takes ".

"Wait for me to do what ? ",she replied with curiosity .

"I will wait for you to say that you love me "he replied.

Several Months went by , Nicky was in her second semester. She was working on her project .

Nicky and William were head over heels in love with each other. They looked so good together.

Nicky was glad that her graduation was in a couple of months. She looked forward to introducing William to her family.

William had said in so many words that she would be his wife.He had already started planning his life around her.


He had some contacts that would help fix Nicky into a good company. Her impeccable grades so far and past academic records made helping her get a job easy.


It was a cool friday evening. William went over to Nicky's room to celebrate the submission of her project after work.


They had just finished eating dinner when she got a call from her mum.She discussed with her mum and dad who was beside her.

They were looking forward to coming for her graduation.

"Nicky my daughter, you should think of settling down" ,she said to her with a warm voice.

"Mummy God is in control, don't worry about me .I will get married one day and give you all the grand kids you desire" she said with subtle sarcasm in her voice. The conversation ended amicably.

Nicky and William laughed about her mum's desire to get married and her reply to her.


" I think I have seen the picture of your mum and sister only.Let me see your dad's picture babe " , he said to her.

Nicky went to get her old phone and switched it on.She sat in front of him on the small Persian rug and they scrolled through her phone gallery for family pictures.

William looked keenly at the pictures as she mentioned their names while scrolling through the gallery.

William froze for a minute. It was like time stood still. He managed to pretend that all was well while his heart bled internally. After some minutes he gave Nicky an excuse just to leave her room.

"Do I tell Nicky about this new discovery? If I do,I might scare her away and I can't bear to loose her",he said to himself.

William was so confused.A million thoughts crossed his mind.

"The past is the past . The future is more important. I will keep it to myself" he rationalised.

William figured that since Amoge had married ,he too
deserved to be happy.

He tried to relax by watching his favourite soccer team play against their arch rivals but the match which supposed to be exciting became boring to him.He couldn't concentrate anymore and so he switched off his TV and went to bed.

William kept on dating Nicky. She graduated with a distinction and was so thrilled when she got the information.

Meanwhile , Amoge was discharged from hospital and didn't have any other cause to go the hospital except for the regular antenatal visits.

The babies were doing great .Both maternal and paternal grand parents were looking forward to carrying their first twin grand children.

Amoge was excited to to be travelling to the UK to attend Nicole's graduation.

Arinze wanted Amoge to stay behind in England to give birth to the twins ,since his parents were going to be on vacation in the UK.
