so they arrested these people that do "illegal" refineries but why can't the government make this legal here in Nigeria since they've got the idea but instead choose to refine our own resources outside Nigeria when we've got people who could do it? I'm am not understanding this.

These are fishing Camps and not refineries.
There is no evidence to show that oil is been refined there.

What is the quality of the fuel being refined there? If their refined product is not causing damage on the machinery it is being used on then their creativity should be harnessed rather than just burning them down!

That's a logical argument that you make but Nigeria is headed by a half-wit and his cohorts.

The smart thing to do in a country known for fuel shortages would be to invite those who engage in this business - have them sit down with financiers and lay out their plans so that both parties can arrive at a rational solution.

Alas, Buhari has never had an intelligent thought in his life and at 73 years of age it's unlikely that trend will change.

I prefer the term "Un-licensed Refineries" instead of "Illegal Refineries".

Madness is when you pay a lot of money in dollars! over what you should have spent to import products you can produce yourself.

MADNESS!

License these guys, regulate them and tax their profits. Create jobs, reduce restlessness in the region.

Uncommon sense!

Good one from the NA.

But the FG should ensure that a serious dialogue involving all stakeholders in the ND is done after all the show of might cos at the end, the military cannot really end militancy in the region simply because there are a thousand tompolos ready to carry arms once they leave the creeks.

I really commend the effort of Nigerian Army on securing the 'nation's territorial integrity'. However, I have some reservation on the destruction of ingenious infusion of local science and entrepreneurship called Local Refinery. I am of the opinion that the government should change the extant laws to regulate as well as encourage the building of more local refineries.

Really these guys can help supply and meet some of our domestic demands for PMS, AGO and DPK as well as save millons of USD that would have been spent on importation.

It's time government should be pragmatic about the way they view issues.

it seems you don't know that the aim of the fg is to frustrate local participation in the refining of crude oil hence the sinister destruction of local participation under the guise of illegal refineries while the Whiteman's refineries are legal refineries.
will fg cease to exist if they encourage these homeboys and on the long issue. them license?

It did not start with the present administration, check links

but it does not mean it should continue as there are better ways of addressing this issue because they burn down their local refineries, they set it up again somewhere else.

Troops of 2 Brigade Nigerian Army conducting field training exercise code named “Operation CROCODILE SMILE” have within the last 48 hours discovered and destroyed 74 illegal refineries and quite a number militants and kidnappers camps in various parts of Rivers and Bayelsa States using swan buggy and other specialists equipment.

Troops of Sub-Sector Bravo in response to a tip off on the presence of suspected kidnappers at Akupoku community, carried out a raid at the location. But no arrest was made as the kidnappers have fled the area.

However, the team also raided Ke community, at the verge of the Atlantic ocean where they discovered and destroyed an illegal refinery. The troops recovered and destroyed 3 large cooking pots and 20 tanks filled with illegally refined Automated Gas Oil (AGO).

Similarly, another set of troops also discovered and destroyed another illegal crude oil refinery at Bile. Items recovered and destroyed include 12 large refining cooking pots,

The troops exercising along Abonnema axis were also informed of the presence of suspected kidnappers at Abakrikri Fishing Pot, they swung into action and carried out cordon and search operation, however, no contact or arrest was made.

The troops of 130 Battalion also raided suspected kidnappers camp at Awukiri. Although no contact was made, the troops recovered an AK-47 rifle empty magazine, 6 face masks, 1 machete and several empty shells of expended ammunitions. The troops destroyed the camp. The troops have also intensified search for the kidnappers nests and other criminal elements camp for clearance.

The Medical unit of 2 Brigade has been dispensing free medical service at Twon Brass in Bayelsa State. You don't understand, illegal refining does not give all the end products, it can only give AGO, they often send the rest away as bye product. No illegal refinery can make profit with legit crude, they use crude oil gotten from pipeline vandalisation or illegal bunkary

The Nigerian Army is so funny. These are fishing camps and small village settlements of the Ijaw people being raided by the Army. There is no family with a bad child and there is no refuse bin where you can throw away a bad child. The children must always come home to roost.

Our refineries are not working and yet the Federal Government is destroying locally refined AGO and fuel. If it were in some developed countries, they will take these youths and train them, employ them to work in our idle refineries.
