Yesterday I got this email from my host.

Hello,

Our server monitors have noticed a huge increase in the requests coming to your website. This has impacted the overall performance of other websites hosted on the servers. To reduce the impact on the servers and other customer accounts, we had to suspend your website and CGI services. The FTP access and the File Manager should still be accessible.

As a courtesy, we have listed below the IP addresses that have frequently accessed your websites:

3660 From: 31.10.131.162
3818 From: 85.252.59.29
3940 From: 124.106.133.67
3964 From: 68.197.30.156
4057 From: 108.195.22.31
4117 From: 72.76.132.54
4165 From: 5.246.127.126
4307 From: 128.23.255.10

If you find that the traffic is genuine, it is advisable to upgrade your account to a VPS hosting solution. You can find information regarding our VPS hosting at: http://www.ipage.com/advanced-hosting/vps.bml .

If the traffic appears to be suspicious, we suggest blocking those suspicious IP's using the '.htaccess editor' tools. You can learn more about blocking IP addresses using the .htaccess editor tool by visiting the link: http://www.ipage.com/knowledgebase/beta/article.bml?ArticleID=624 .

Once action has been taken to lower the server load, please reply to this email and we will review the account.

I currently average 2,000 daily views on my blog www.francismary.org so I believe that the traffic is not genuine(if the numbers beside the ip addresses are number of hits from an ip), my blog has been down for over 15 hours and it's not funny. I have blocked all those ip addresses like 10 hours ago and my blog is not yet up.

I know there are advantages of using WordPress but with blogger I would not be having issues like this I believe. I have a custom Doman name and I can easily switch to blogger but I don't know if it's the best for me.

Please advice.

Thank you

Choose whichever suit you and if you are convinced. Otherwise, switch to another hosting website that can offer you what you want. I'm disappointed in Ipage though. Not all hosting website offered unmetered bandwidth (note: not unlimited bandwidth). Unlimited bandwidth are in fact limited; most hosting companies are not honest enough to tell you the actual limit usage while unmetered means you can use whatever you like. I've used ipage, the last of my website with them I transferred to Qservers. Though, I've not had problem with them like that (who knows If same will happen if my traffic grows).

I've moved to Blogger from WordPress this year and back to WordPress again last month. You can choose whichever platform you like so far you're getting cash and exposure. But note the things you have to consider:

- There will be much 404 error link you have to fix (WordPress to blogger)
- Change of permalink structure you have to take care (related to above)
- Finding suitable template for your blog (thank God it's not e-commerce site)
- You will lose some SEO traffic and it will take a while to bounce back and search engines to index your site.

Hopefully, experts will shed more light.

Hello FMary
I think you should wait a little with WordPress.

My suggestion is to get a cdn (cloudflare can serve for the main time).

Also try change host (I think ipage is EIG company) to a more server that offer standard server security.

Just Imagine if it was a Nigerian Host that Suspended that site. We would have seen different feedbacks about how Foreign hosts are the only hope of Mankind and that all Nigerian Hosts are useless. But see how all responses have been courteous because na Oyinbo Suspend am.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_delivery_network will tell you all you need to know. Cloudflare offer a free plan (that's why I recommend you start with them).

I would advise you try the following.

1. Lookup those ip address to confirm if they are genuine.

2. If they are not, blacklist them. If they are. Leave the ips but try installing a WordPress security plugin ( I won't recommend any). Reason I said so is because at times WordPress website do receive visits that aren't geniue but the are always targeting selected url or links on your website.

3. Am not here to soil any Web hosting coy but next time watch before you use any AIG coy. Ipage own by AIG. Besides Ipage isn't good in terms of traffic management.

4. Switch to Another Web hosting coy. It might be hard but trust me. I prepare WordPress over blogger any time anyway. Most big companies and firms you see make use of WordPress.

I think thats all. If there's any. I would add later.

Yeah thanks, I googled and found their website and read it up. They sound cool and I want to subscribe for their free version first.

With what cloudfare has promised to deliver, will there be any need to change my host as some people suggest?

Thanks for your suggestions, I checked out the ip addresses and they come from US, UK, UAE but the point is that one ip has no reason to make requests thousands of times in one day if I am correct. So I blocked all the IPs involved if only my host will reinstate my site for now.

I know it's possible for a hacker to use different IPs so all these hits could be coming from same place but with different ip. I am not an expert in this area but then I am going with cloudfare.

I don't know if it's still necessary to change my host if I have to go with cloudfare

Fisrt check the clicks/url from those ip address.

second, since you've blocked the ip address, lets hope ipage re-instates your site.

Going with cloudfare depends on your site but still you have to get a stable host. reason is that, should your hosting coy makes your site go down for days , that means cloudfare will keep showing the offline version till your host re-instates your site.. well. since you have blocked thoses ip's, watch your website now.

NB: Try and get the url thsoes ip's are pointing to on your website
