The military is well organized, they have men assigned to watch over those praying/observing holiday and those men can be Muslims and Christians. They don't have to assign only christians to protect Muslims. In military, no Muslim or Christian duties.

(Quran 3:195) Their Lord responded to them: "I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female - you are equal to one another.

The reason male and female don't worship side by side is to avoid distraction.
