I feel like giving up, I establish about 0.25ha plantain farm last year. The crop grew rapidly, good soil etc. The issue is that fruiting have started in earnest but alas some people will go their and harvest it even before maturity. My uncle told me to go African way by marking the farm spiritually, the baba that leased the land to me is saying the same thing, the question is what about myself who knows nothing about spiritual marking, I told police DPO of the area, he only laughed at me, saying he doesn't have enough men and vehicle for towns in the LG not to now talk about patrolling a farm that is like 3.5km from town, I am angry, I can shoot someone on that farm if I have gun. I don't really know what to do.

Mark some plantain trees near the gate or fence and poison the plantain. Your next topic will be quite interesting.

But really is there no way to fence it? Extra expense but might be necessary

Hmmn, see another unforeseen dillema for the entrepreneur & budding investor? There's hunger in the land and honesty has flown out the windows!

Anyway, is it possible to set traps in some of the thieves' access routes that you yourself don't patronise?

And have you tried making some loyal friends in that immediate community? So, that you could use their vigilance in your own little "Neighborhood Watch" kinda thing? A couple of friends and I resorted to that in 2012 when we got dabbling in Catfish Farming and the fishes kept growing legs and disappearing. A friend did the same with his yam plantations and the indigenous gbagyi groups in dobi side, Abj also.

You secure the loyalty of some of them and use theme to watch your farm, and the rest of their peeps otherwise they all might turn deaf ears and blind eyes to whatever's going on in your farms.

The Police definitely gave you a candid but depressing answer reflecting their own hopelessness and lack of ingenuity because your banana-thieves can't be too far from that community itself. And starting investigations from plantain sellers and banana marketers in the area might've helped in getting some clues but since they're mentally lazy and wouldn't even wanna make any effort as you're not a rich politician bribing them, well, you have to go it the manual way!

I don't subscribe to hodge-podge fetish razzmatazz dabblings and deals-with-the-devil all in the name of securing plantain; pls, ignore your land-leaser abeg!

Anyhow, God dey! Take heart and Godspeed, bro!

I forgot to mention it that the DPO actually promised to keep an eye on plantain sellers around the area but he insisted that might not produce much result since he cannot arrest plantain sellers randomly, he did promise to help, I wouldn't mind paying for fuel and other tips if he give me better assurances, this vigilante/OPC angle is good, I'll work on it today, thanks.
