Recession: Okonjo-Iweala Must Have A Rethink – Doyin Okupe by sarrki(m): 3:42am On Sep 20, 2016
The Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe has said that Nigeria’s ‘partisanship is obscenely unhealthy ‘for a nation and that “the change begins with me ” mantra, of the All Progressive Congress, APC-lead government was late as it would have been better if it was part of President Buhari’s inaugural speech.

Okupe on his Facebook page, Monday, in a post titled ‘National Economic Emergency’ also said that the economic recession which Nigeria is facing ‘calls for an end to extreme partisanship’ and that wailing, howling or even cursing from the citizens will not help the situation.

He went further to say that ‘pretence, conceit or sheer optimism from government quarters would not solve the ‘economic infirmity bedevilling our Nation’.

Okupe enjoined Nigerians to ‘put all hands on deck’, begging that the likes of that Dr, Mrs, Okonjo Iweala must have a rethink and that we must bring all our ace economists – Dr Kalu Idika Kalu , Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Rewani, Tunde Lemo, Patrick Utomi, Shamsuddeen Usman, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, and a host of others – on board as the problems facing Nigeria was not about Buhari or the APC.

More so Okupe backed President Buhari on the need for Emergency Powers bill saying that for the President to spend monies he cannot wait usual debates legislative chambers.

Read below Doyin Okupe’s post

”National Economic Emergency

It is a fact that Nigeria as a country is in dire straits in terms of its economy. It is not too important how we got here or who or what brought us here. We need an exit plan desperately.

Sadly, there is too much politicking in Nigeria. Our Partisanship is obscenely unhealthy for our nation. A few of our people are still behaving as if elections are yet to take place. But the truth is elections have come and obviously they have also gone.

Unfortunately our economy, has slipped into a recession and that is crippling everybody and everything.

No matter what government and those opposed to government are saying, there is no easy way out of a recession.

When President Obama came in, in his first term, the US was in recession. He was young, brilliant, and smoking hot, it took nearly 2yrs to see the tips of the mountain, and almost the same length of time before the flood of recession started to recede. At that time the opposition threw diatribes and invectives similar to what is being thrown at President Buhari now, at him.

But he remained focussed and steadfast. Eventually he succeeded.

‘While wailing, howling or even cursing from the populace will certainly not help our situation, pretence, conceit or sheer optimism from government quarters also is no panacea for the economic infirmity bedevilling our Nation.

‘This situation calls for an end to extreme partisanship in the face of a major threatening national emergency.

‘We need to, and we must put all hands on deck. May be President Buhari’s famous quote”….We have no other country that we can call our own” is more apt now than “the change begins with me ” mantra, which may not be as bad as it is being presented, except that the cliche was coming almost 18months late. It would have been better received if it was part of the inaugural speech of the president.

Dr,mrs, Okonjo Iweala must have a rethink. This is not about Buhari or Apc, it is about the survival of over 20% of black population in the world. It is about the continued existence of the most populous nation in Africa. It is about Nigeria, the only nation where black history and heritage can be redefined.

We must bring in all our aces, Kalu Ndika Kalu, Soludo, Rewani, Tunde Lemo, Utomi, shanmsudeen, our revered Emir of Kano and a host of others.

Recession is a word, I agree, but a very challenging word describing a critical problem. But it is a challenge. Nations have gone in and out of recessions before now, we can jointly, working together , find answer to this thorny all encompassing national malaise.

Does the President need emergency powers to deal with this situation ? I answer YES in the affirmative even though I have reservations .

But truth is sacrosanct . Monies must be spent that cannot wait for the normal process of legislative approvals. Actions must be taking by the President and his executives that cannot wait for the usual debates in our hallowed legislative chambers.

But alas, there are fears, genuine fears of abuse of such powers, especially against political opponents. Perhaps this is what we need to debate and work on and ensure that all such possibilities are eliminated with legislative craftiness and deftness that cannot be wanting amongst the robust body of our legislators .

But if the president must lead this struggle against Recession such legal framework will assist him greatly.’

Okupe has a point but he must understand that heaven help those who help themselves

You don't expect any of the aforementioned to force themselves on the president. Hell, they're doing very well and are not desperate for a job in this administration

They've even been making suggestions in their own capacity but has the old man listened or taken any of their advice? NO

But I think its an insult that these few names are always called upon as if there are no other qualified Nigerians or are they magicians?

To be frank, most of them already had their chance at the helm of affairs and where did it lead us?

Okupe's call is a clarion call which all Nigerians must hearken to. The situation the nation finds itself must be seen as a national disaster that must be collectively solved. This is not the time for rabid opposition politics but a time for nationalistic acts. The President must galvanize the whole nation behind him with the right policies and actions. There is no great nation that hasn't been through what we are going through. What makes their experience different from ours is the collective resolution of the crises.

Madam Ngozi, you know what's good for you. please stay out of this government .and don't listen to their rehortics, they're very good at that.
Let them carry their cross..they thought economic governance is 1+1..,ow it's dawning on everyone...
They abuse you and jonah..scrap your policies that was geared to see us through this..they don't even appreciate all the efforts you guys put to take nigeria to that height.
Now they're using style to bring you back..no gree o.forget patriotism.cos nigerian and Apc don't understand it's meaning..
If you ever come back..the will ruin your reputation that you've built..at any small mistake..they've mouth. And propaganda machines..so they will shout..not minding it's a your fault or not..blaming is their hubby.

Allow Sanusi, soludo and others that are Interested. They can handle it too,if they can't then it's ok.
Stay and enjoy your family and fame..nobody has monopoly of economics..let them tidy their matter.

1. Money has TIME value.
2. Money has VELOCITY.
3. You can't bring back Akinwumi Adesina. Geniuses are RARE. Charlatans are dozens for the penny.
4. Ngozi isn't prepared for another round of SLEEPLESS NIGHTS, especially without a proper Economic Team that understand her vision.

For 1 & 2 it's not the doing of this present govt . Nigeria is an import dependent nation so the pressure on the naira was Damn too much to the extent that we are thinking of devaluation of the naira. The major cause of is that our reserve went down seriously during the last administration & we didn't save for the rainy days.

3&4 ) No man is indispensable we don't have the money

(Nigeria ) we are spending then so it makes this two you

mentioned looks like hero. Am not saying they are not

Good but anyone would have performed with enough resources at their disposal

Truth according to a friend:

Nigeria Economy was never strong. It was only revolving around corruption.

A man steals Millions of Naira. Uses part of it to build a house. He will buy bags of cements, building rods and other materials. Pay workers who work on the site. Give Millions to his girlfriend, who will go and buy Brazilian hair, buy expensive jewelleries and shoes. Spent Millions on a five star hotel to organize a birthday party and buy assorted drinks.

They were getting Billions of Naira from the scam called fuel subsidy. They will go and keep the money in the Banks, and the Banks were looking for fat deposits.
From the loots, fat offerings and tithes were paid. Millions were even paid to Religious leaders for prayers. The Economy was booming around corruption.

Then, a new Sheriff came to town with integrity. He says, it is not going to be business as usual.
TSA was introduced.
The war against corruption declared.
Most sources of ill gotten wealth cut off.
No more free cash for the boys.

And because we are a consuming Nation from ill gotten wealth, the so called strong Economy suddenly collapsed.
Some even suggested that corruption should be brought back.

We must now start to build a productive Economy based on genuine source of wealth.

This is the sorry state of Nigeria Economy today.

Ok, but don't you think its necessary the "change" starts from him & ossy doing what they promised. The only import here is that they are worth way way more than they made us believe, hence the tacit resolve not to try it, so as to avoid the resultant public hoopla.
