Prices Of Foodstuffs In Bauchi Down By 50% by Nobody: 9:46pm On Sep 26, 2016 |
Prices of food items in Bauchi State have continued to go down after months of soaring food prices. Checks in some of the major markets in the state revealed that prices of food items have reduced by about 50 percent. According to a grain seller at Muda Lawal Market, Bauchi, Malam Adamu Kafin Maigari, a bag of maize which few months ago was going for N18,000 now sells for N9,000 while local rice that used to cost N35,000 is now being sold at N20,000. He also said that a bag of Beans is now sold at N16,000 from its previous price of N25,000, while a bag of millet and white rice popularly called Shinkafar Tuwo, now cost N9,000 and N20,000 respectively from their previous prices of N15,000 and N37,000. He attributed the crash in prices to the bumper harvest recorded in the country following the massive engagement in farming by many people. Kafin Maigari, however, expressed concern with the high cost of foreign rice which is still sold at N18,500 per bag. The grain seller, therefore, called on the federal government to address the shortage of foreign currencies particularly the dollar, to enable importers conduct their legal businesses without hitches. While commenting on the development, the chairman, Traders and Artisans Association, Muda Lawal Market Bauchi, Alhaji Bala Mai Kaji, thanked Allah for bringing down prices of food items due to bumper harvest in this year’s farming season. Mai Kaji called on traders, particularly grain sellers in the state, to desist from hoarding. He warned that the association plans to come up with new measures to check the trend. The chairman said that the association has already received reports that traders from some neighbouring countries are trooping into Bauchi and other northeastern states to buy food items in large quantities for onward delivery to their respective countries. He, therefore, called on the relevant authorities to take measures to check the influx of foreign traders who buy food items and take to their respective countries. 8 Likes

That's good. We do hope the reduction in the prices of foodstuffs and other commodities would as well go down across the board. 1 Like |

If this is true, this shows that Nigerians are gradually going back into agriculture. Its a good thing and i hope all states will follow suit as this should be a collective effort. We now understand that we cannot depend on the government anymore hence it is on us to make Nigeria a better and more habitable place. |

If only there were adequate storage facilities to mop-up the excess produce, foodstuff prices would be reduced all year round. |
