Save University of Benin Teaching Hospital
Residents of the University Of Benin Teaching Hospital have embarked on a mission to save the hospital from collapse.
The Hospital as we speak is in imminent collapse, the theatres are hardly functional, we have a situation were surgeons are sweating on their patients with attendant wound break down afterwards. Rodents and insects find their way into the theatre quite often, pathetic that is all UBTH has for an aseptic theatre.
The wards are no different, the taps in the wards are not functional and many of the beds are broken, the toiletries are bad, some patients have to do 'short put' to pass faeces.
A few months ago a staff of the National Assembly was a patient relative, as her child was billed for surgery, when she saw the deplorable situation of Ward B3 in UBTH, she threatened to report the hospital to the relevant authorities. Her child was immediately taken to special ward, she insisted that no body should be in that ward as it is not fit for human habitation, the ward was then closed all the patients relocated. This is the situation in all the wards in UBTH, sadly there is no National Assembly staff to check on them all.
The Accident and Emergency is not spared as there are no glucometers to check blood sugar, no sphygomanometers to check blood pressure, basic drugs and consumables are absent. Patients have to go out of the hospital for drugs and investigations.
The Radiotherapy machine which cost billions of tax payers money is broken down from poor maintenance, the CT scan and Xray machine which cost millions are also not functional. Patients have to travel miles to get these investigations done, one wonders how these private laboratories and diagnostic centres can fix their machines and UBTH management can't fix that of UBTH. It is interesting to note that members of UBTH management are share holders in these firms.
The Hospital is also grossly under staffed, nurses, pharmacists and doctors are over worked as their number is far less than sufficient. In the long run it has a negative impact on the quality of patient care.
Salaries and emoluments this is a no go area, as UBTH staff are least payed when compared to other federal government hospitals. The salaries are also irregular as after been provided by the federal government the hospital management dispense to the staff according to their mood. Do you know that the hospital management deducts call duty from female staff on maternity leave thus so many female staff are forced to keep working when pregnant. The hospital management spends millions maintaining flowers and lawns because the Chief Medical Director practices a religion that loves flowers. Can Nigerians ask why the Stem Cell Transplant unit of UBTH is down and out. This is a unit that will bring patients from outside the country to UBTH. The last time the CMD was ill he traveled to India for treatment.
After discussing with resident doctors of UBTH, I understood the reason for their action, it is to make UBTH a better place for patient care, if they get their demands it's a step in checking medical tourism. I SUPPORT THE UBTH RESIDENT DOCTORS STRIKE.
