Growing up in eastern Nigeria, means you either grew up in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and major parts of Delta and Rivers states. Small parts of Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Edo, and Kogi state are also considered part of Igbo land.
Growing up in the east, especially during the 90s was filled with a lot of memories. Here are some most people will definitely remember:

1. Okpa
Okpa is synonymous with japanese Nigeria. The Okpa is a well-liked legume ready by eradicating the outer overlaying of the Babara seed and grounding to flour from which the thick strong meals types out of the flour throughout cooking.

Water, oil and different condiments are added to make it appear to be the favored moimoi. The preferred Okpa is that of the Enugu individuals.

2. Abacha
Another popular food is Abacha which shares a name with Nigeria’s military dictator, Sani Abacha. It is made from shredded cassava and can be prepared with oil bean and palm oil and is also known as African salad.

3. Palm Kernel (Aki)
The cracking of palm kernels to eat the soft kernel inside is used as a metaphor to represent poverty. However growing up in eastern Nigeria, you could always find children engaged in the cracking of palm kernels known as ‘Iti Aki’ mostly for fun.

4. Catholic or Anglican
If you grew up in eastern Nigeria, the religious options open to you were largely limited to the Catholic or the Anglican churches. If you were neither Catholic nor Anglican, then you were in the minority.

Growing up, the conversations of men in the eastern part of Nigeria was almost always about their containers coming into the country. Almost every man had a container coming in or one that just arrived.

7. Spare elements
Ladipo spare parts
If you had no plans to attend a higher institution, you were most likely grouped in the spare parts business by a close family relative or someone your parents knew.

Even without being to Lagos, there were names of two places frequently mentioned in the east and those were: Ladipo, where most people from the east had set up a thriving spare parts market, and Alaba, where the making of films was a thriving business.

9. Ariaria and Major market
Whenever it was time for the buying of Christmas clothes, the go to market in the east was either the Ariaria market in Aba, Abia state or the main market in Onitsha, Anambra state.

10. 33″ and Life Beer
While Gulder, Star and Heneiken are quite popular in other parts of Nigeria, for people in the eastern part, you should not be surprised to know that 33″ and Life beers are the alcoholic beverages of choice.

11. FGGC, Owerri and FGC, Okigwe
As Kings college and Queens college are the popular schools for western Nigeria, Federal Government Colleges for boys and girls in Owerri and other states were and still are the schools of choice for most parents.

12. Highlife music
While Fuji and Juju music are the mainstay of the west, growing up in the east was not complete without the melody of highlife music from the likes of Oliver De Coque and Chief Osita Osadebe.

13. Traditional Weddings
Igbo traditional wedding
The highlight of most weeks are the traditional weddings which occur regularly. A traditional wedding was kind of compulsory and it was not out of place to see people trooping to the houses of the bride in their Sunday best. Halls are not usually rented, chairs placed within the compound were enough.

14. Ncho
Ncho is known as Ayo in Yoruba and is a popular game among children growing up in the east. For those who could not get their hands on the game, which is mostly carved out of wood, they made do with holes dug in the ground.

A childhood in the eastern part of Nigeria is not complete without a Biafran story, almost every family has one Biafran story, usually heroic, sometimes a tragedy.

I'm Yoruba and I've lived in Lagos all my life and I've seen 80% of all you listed, its only that #1 I don't eat cos I like it not. All this igbo joints would play high life on Fridays , OK, never tried grass cutter and my igbo neighbors won't bother telling me biafra stories
