Gdevening great farmers. We wish you all a happy New month. We wish to prepare our minds against the next planting season.

** YOU WANT TO BECOME A SERIOUS FARMER?
DO THESE THINGS BELOW.

1. *Conduct Market Survey*

Most farmers rush into farming without validating the market capability of their particular crop.

Growing any type of crop without a particular market in mind is suicidal.

Funny enough most farmers do that.

Here in Kenya, many farmers are worse. They have become a “ _me too”_ farmer.

They certify what to grow by looking at what their neighbors are growing

Due to this kind of behavior, the market becomes saturated with similar goods.

The aftermath is that competition starts to happen: the forces of economics take place. T hat is, the supply is more than the demand, thus forcing the prices to come down.

No farmer wants such a scenario.

However, that is what you will get if you fail to look for a market upfront.

You’ll pay for the mistake by squeezing your margins dry.

Therefore, for you to be outstanding, start by approaching all probable market outlets about what you intend to grow and then choose an idea based on your results.

By so doing, you will be able to know that what you intend to grow is what the market really needs.

2. *Make Sure you Go for the right crop*

For you to optimize farm profitability, choose the right crop.

In any market, the end users will demand for more than one commodity.

As a farmer in such circumstances, you have a decision to make.

Our stand therefore would be, choose the crop that has a higher market value.

This is so because the cost of production is almost same across many crops.

For instance if you want to grow Macadamia, Hass avocado, Oranges or Mangoes, you will require land, same land preparation and same operation cost.

The difference among all these fruits is the market value.

In our case, it favors hass avocado in which case you should go for tomatoes.

3. *Make Sure you plan well in Advance*

They say if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Ignore planning at your own peril.

No one can guarantee your success in farming but if you plan well you increase your chances of becoming successful.

Most farmers ignore this important factor and by so doing most of their ideas never see the light of the day.

If you know and adhere to this, you have an advantage over the rest of the folks.

When you clearly take your time to write a detailed farm plan, you will definitely save yourself a lot of time and frustration trying to figure out what to do next.

Any farmer can’t afford the luxury of time.

Given the perishable nature of most horticultural produce, you will have a problem if you lack a plan of action.

4. *Diversify your ventures*

Did you know that most successful people in Africa are also farmers.

Not just farmers but in many avenues, for example, President Uhuru is a dairy farmer, a coffee farmer, cotton farmer, sisal farmer e.t.c,.

Don’t just plant maize, diversify with other more profitable crops such as Macadamia, Avocados and Dairy.

There are some other instances where specialization is paramount, but if you want farm profitability badly, you can’t afford to specialize.

For instance if you are growing tree-tomato fruits, you could also intercrop them with other vegetables such as kales, spinach, pilipili hoho e.t.c,..

These intercropped short term crops will enable you to earn some income before your main crop.

5. *Be Patient and Stick to the Plan*

Although farming is a good way of earning some income and having control, it’s not magic that you plant today and suddenly, you become a millionaire.

I will tell you: farming is not for the fainthearted; it is challenging and requires patience and resilience.

In farming there are several uncertainties, such as crop failures and market fluctuations.

One year may produce a bountiful harvest, while another year may bring total devastation and little or no income.

This is all part of the business of agriculture.

Now, when you face such situation, the last thing you need to do is switch plans.

While some challenges might require a change of plans, it’s better to stick to your plan and learn from your mistakes.

It is all part of the process that eventually leads to farm profitability.

6. *Ensure You Keep Clear And Traceable Records*

Ensure your records are up-to date and accurate.

Pay attention to details.

Know where your money is generated and where it is spent.

Storing receipts in a shoe box and waiting to post figures at the end of the year is not a recommended record keeping system.

Good records will help you to evaluate your cash flow as well as project the profitability of your venture.

Having said all that, success in farming depends solely on you.

What we have told you, combined with what you know, can give you massive profits.

We urge you to work towards the above. We wish you goodluck as you apply the right principles in your farming venture.

*INTRODUCTION TO THE GROWING OF STRAWBERRIES*

*INTRODUCTION*

Picking the right strawberry cultivar requires a combined knowledge of hardiness, disease resistance, flavor, size and time of fruiting. There are June bearing, everbearing and day-neutral strawberries, each with a different time and duration of fruiting. You can also go all out and plant each of the three different types of strawberries in the garden.

*STRAWBERRY TYPES*

(i) JUNE BEARING :June bearing plants have one monster crop of berries per year. June is the general time for bearing but that may be earlier or later depending upon your zone.

(ii) EVERBEARING :
Everbearing strawberry plants have more modest/smaller sized fruits , but they can start producing as soon as there is 12 hours of daylight and continue bearing until the end of summer. We at SEEDWORLD LTD deal on this strawberry variety.

(iii) DAY NEUTRAL : Day-neutral strawberry plant types have three peak periods of fruiting. Usually, these fall as early June, mid July and late August, which provides a nicely spread out crop.

It is important to avoid growing strawberry on land where the following crops were planted the previous season, due to susceptibility to Verticillium wilt a viral disease controlled through crop rotation only. Tomatoes, capsicums, Eggplant/ okra. Diseases or insects that may have plagued those crops can be carried over and affect the strawberries.

*IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE IN GROWING STRAWBERRIES*

1. *LAND PREPARATION*

Strawberry gardening starts with thorough land preparation in order to raise a vigorous crop. A bed raised to 15cm with a width of 1metre by any convenient length should be prepared, and well decomposed manure incorporated into the soil at a rate of one medium bucket per square metre. Then planting holes are made at a spacing of 30cm from row to row and 30cm from plant to plant.

2. *PROPAGATION/ PLANTING*

Strawberries prefer rich, fertile soil that contains plenty of organic matter.
In strawberries gardening propagation is done using vegetative material namely splits of the strawberries crown. Planting is done after thorough watering of the bed and the roots be are well covered but not too deep so as to prevent rotting of the stem.

NB : In planting do ensure that all roots are buried and that the crown(shoots) are not covered with soil.

3. MULCHING : Mulching is a recommended post planting management practice in strawberries gardening in order to conserve moisture, control weeds and keep strawberries clean. A layer of mulch, underneath the leaves of the plants will prevent water splashing onto the soil and then onto the foliage or leaves from passing on soil pathogens. Remove any dead or decaying foliage or leaves as well, as soon as you spot it.

4. IRRIGATION : Irrigate daily in the afternoon during the first month after planting for good crop establishment and 2-3 times a week from the second month of gardening onwards. Strawberries dislike wet soil, but they also don’t tolerate drought well or dry soils, so be consistent in your watering.

4. DEBLOSSOMING : De-blossoming and removal of strawberry flowers is recommended for the first 2 months to avoid premature fruiting, which may lead to stunting and poor development of the crop.

5. FERTILIZER APPLICATION : FERTILIZERS Strawberries require a lot of nutrients hence one has to constantly avail the supply. Strawberry plants need a lot of nitrogen as they are sending out runners and producing berries. Ideally, you have prepared the soil before planting the berries by amending with compost or manure. This will enable you to lessen or eliminate the amount of additional fertilizer the plants need.

6. INTRODUCING GROWTH STIMULATORS/ROOTING AND SHOOTING HORMONE :

*USE VEGIMAX* - This stimulates the shooting and the rooting of your berry plants. Use the following foliar feeds. You too can make your own organic foliars using farm yard manure. (Please ensure the manure if fully decomposed before use) DI Grow starter .

– *Two weeks after planting Easy grow vegetative*- When shoots appear (Can be repeated every 2 weeks).

Aids in strengthening the plant in readiness of fruiting.

*DI Grow fruit*- When you want to trigger the fruiting process you can use red cap DI GROW organic fertilizer.

7.HARVESTING : Harvesting of strawberry fruits starts 2½months -3months after planting. Thinning to 2- 3 splits per crown should be done every 7 months to allow rejuvenation and increase strawberry yields. Runners and old leaves are removed in strawberries gardening in a practice called pruning or stripping.

Flowering is continuous with adequate watering with a pause in the cold season. The lifespan of the crop is 3 years.During the gardening period foliar feeds may be applied to boost the yields. Rooting media or enzymes which include plantone, Anatone1, Anatone( a broad spectrum for roots, flower stimulation and fruit retention) may enhance strawberry plant establishment.

Tie the top end of the cuttings, then dip strawberries cuttings into the enzyme solution for 42 hrs. Put fertile soil into plastic bags and plant the cuttings ensuring two nodes are below the soil level, then water frequently. Seeking knowledge on gardening of strawberries is a necessary step during the planning period.

* USEFUL INFORMATION ON GROWING PARSELY AS A HERB*

It has long been considered a valuable herb and we now know it to be rich in iron and carotene. It need not be confined to herb gardens either, for in the flower garden its foliage provides a pleasant back-ground, particularly to spring bulbs.

Poor soil and over-crowding can hinder germination. Basically, parsley needs warmth for germination, a rich, deeply dug soil and plenty of room. When these conditions are satisfied, the plants will develop into dark green domes that are a joy to see and to pick.

Parsley, is naturally slow germinating, and along with carrots and celery, parsley can suffer from having seeds with underdeveloped embryos. This means that once sown these seeds still need time to develop and mature before they can germinate. Whilst in this immature state they are susceptible to soil pests and diseases and this is often the reason why germination is slow . Early sowings often also fail because the soil temperature is too low for rapid germination and development.

Parsley will germinate at temperatures from 40-90°F. The optimum temperature is 80°F with a drop during the night to 68°F, and at lower temperatures germination will take correspondingly longer. A suitable compromise particularly for early sowings, is to sow in containers at room temperature, when germination usually takes around 7 days, and transplant later on into the garden. An alternative is fluid sowing where pre-germinated seedlings are piped along the drill in an inert gel. Research has shown that this method results in better and earlier emergence.

It is usually only necessary to make two sowings, one in spring and one in the summer.
The latter crop to provide continuity of supply through the winter, and into the following spring. If you are sowing indoors it can be done as early as February for planting outside in April. Outdoors, sow in drills 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep, in rows 12 inches apart. During dry weather water the bed well before sowing and if you have persistent problems with parsley, try mixing damp peat with the seeds before sowing. Watering the drill before sowing with a kettleful of boiling water has also proved helpful, perhaps because it acts as a soil sterilant to keep disease and weeds away during the long germination period.

After germination, perhaps the most important thing is to give the plants enough room, so thin out before the seedlings begin to crowd and leave each plant finally with 12 inches of space. Light picking can commence 85-90 days from sowing and from then on should be carried out regularly along the full length of the row. This will ensure a constant supply of fresh leaves. You can dry what you do not use or even put it on the compost heap, but if you stop picking, the foliage will go coarse.

*INTRODUCING THE SUNFLOWER **

*DESCRIPTION*

Sunflowers are tall annuals. Modern cultivated varieties of sunflower reach a plant height of between 1.5 and 2.5 m at flowering and have strong taproots, from which deeply-penetrating lateral roots develop.

There is one apical inflorescence on a stem of 20-30 leaves. Leaves are large, dark green and roughly heart shaped, they have a wrinkled surface and prominent veins.

The leaves are individually stalked and arranged round the stem in such a fashion that light interception is maximised. The flower head typically has a maximum diameter of 15-30 cm which consists of mostly yellow and sterile ligulate or ray flowers and the fertile disc or tube flowers.

The flowers tend to be cross-pollinating and the best temperature range for the production of seed is 20-25°C. Seed and oil yield are reduced under conditions of stress.

Oilseed producing varieties have a 1000 seed weight of 40 to 60g and non-oilseed varieties have a 1000 seed weight of sometimes over 100g.

The crop originated in subtropical and temperate zones, but through selective breeding has been made highly adaptable, especially to warm temperate regions.

Sunflower is adapted to a range of soil conditions, but grows best on well-drained, high water-holding capacity soils with a near neutral pH (6.5-7.5).

Production on high-stress soils such as those affected by drought, salinity or wetness is not exceptional but compares favourably with other commonly grown commercial crops.

Native sunflower and the early varieties were self incompatible and required insect pollination for economic seed set and yield.

However, because the number of pollinators was often too low current hybrid varieties have been selected for and possess high levels of self compatibility.

Modern hybrids still benefit from insect pollination.

*Details of Quality Characteristics Average oil content of the seed*:

40-50% (Entire fruit), 50-60% (kernel only). Oil composition: Over 90% oleic and linoleic acids in reciprocal proportions, although states 25.1% oleic, 66.2% linoleic. Average protein content of the seed: 20-30% .

To date, sunflower oil has only been used as an edible oil due to it's higher price and limited supply in comparison to other oils. But due to its naturally high proportion of linoleic acid and advances in oil processing technology, the oil has advantages as a drying oil over linseed oil as it does not yellow with time.

The yellowing is due to the high linolenic acid content of the linseed oil). With the development of varieties high in oleic acid, and if a reduction in production costs can be achieved, sunflower oil could be used in the oleochemical industry. There is limited production of non-oilseed varieties for use in confectionery and as bird feed.

Sunflower is perceived to be a drought tolerant crop as it roots deeply and extracts water at depths not reached by other crops. Sunflower is comparable to maize in many ways although it can extract water more efficiently in low-rainfall areas.

The seedbed should be prepared so that a moist soil environment is available for germination and growth. The soil surface should be left as rough as possible to reduce the risk of soil erosion, drifting and blowing soil can seriously damage young seedlings.

If the soil becomes compacted prior to planting reduced aeration and restricted water movement will occur, these conditions will increase the risk of downy mildew occurring. Breakdown of soil structure also reduces nutrient and water uptake and therefore yield.

Sunflower has a wide potential sowing window. High yields may be produced from early plantings yet yields may be reduced by increased pest problems.

Soil temperature should be a minimum of 7ºC for planting and around 10ºC for germination. Lower temperatures will increase the susceptibility of seedlings to diseases such as downy mildew.

The main insect problems in sunflower crops include cutworms, sunflower bud moth, sunflower stem weevil, sunflower root weevil and the sunflower midge.

Major disease problems include downy mildew, alternaria leaf and stem spot, septoria leaf spot, sclerotinia, botrytis, phoma, stem canker, verticillium wilt and nematode diseases. Adequate prevention and treatment is therefore necessary to tackle the above.

One of the major problematic weeds in the sunflower crop is wild oat, this can cause severe yield loss and should be treated if the threshold level is reached.

Other potentially damaging problems include birds, rabbits, deer, mice, flooding and frost. Soils are often found to be deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur. Potassium, calcium and magnesium are also frequently deficient in high-rainfall areas.

Boron may also be required in some soils. Nitrogen applications of 50-75kg/ha are generally sufficient.

The crop is generally harvested in September-October after a growing season of around 120 days (depending on summer temperatures, relative moisture distribution and fertility levels).

Sunflowers should be grown in a suitable rotation to reduce the risk of weed, pest and disease attack, volunteers establishing, soil moisture depletion or phytotoxicity of the sunflower residue to the sunflower crop.

**HOW TO USE UREA AND OTHER NITROGENOUS FERTILIZERS*

Nitrogenous fertilizers are fertilizer rich in nitrogen, they are very important to crop production; nitrogen is one of the essential nutrient elements needed to enhance crop growth. Application of fertilizers is one of the post-planting operations in crop production. The choice of fertilizer to use is very important. It is very possible you add fertilizer to the soil and in return it impaired the productivity of the soil, thus, resulting in low yield. This is a function of the type of fertilizer used.

There are two types of fertilizer, namely organic and inorganic. The latter is commonly used in commercial cultivation. Though organic fertilizer is the best due to its slow release of nutrients, it is not commonly used.
Nitrogen is very important to plants because it plays an active role in the growth and development of crops. It plays an active role in cell division, which facilitates the growth and repair of damaged plant tissues. Also, it is a very important component of chlorophyll; this gives the plant its green coloration. When deficient in the soil, it greatly reduces yield; especially in leafy vegetables.

When to use Nitrogenous fertilizer in agriculture
Most farmers do not know how to use nitrogenous fertilizers; nitrogen induces the growth of vegetative parts of any crop. Nitrogen boosts the growth of leaves and enhances the rapid growth of the crop.

Nitrogenous fertilizer is best used at the vegetative stage of plants for fruit vegetables like cucumber or throughout the growth stage of plants cultivated solely for their leaves. when the plants are still young and tender; then, they need nitrogen. Nitrogen can be exemplified to protein in the human diet. It is good for younger plants, it helps to build tissues and repair damaged ones.

When you apply nitrogen to young crops, it hastens the growth of the crops and boosts the growth of the vegetative parts. So as the plants grow old, the application of nitrogenous fertilizer should be reduced because nitrogen has the ability to delay maturity and fruition of plants. As the vegetative parts grow, the tendency of the crops attaining maturity reduces.

However, the intent of the production at times may warrant the use of nitrogenous fertilizers throughout the planting period. Nitrogenous fertilizers can be used on crops grown for its vegetative parts alone, like leafy vegetables such as Ugu or Ewedu. It greatly induces the growth of the leaves, thus, increasing yield. It can be used solely on the farm. Examples of common nitrogen fertilizer for plants are Urea, Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN).

Precautions of using nitrogenous fertilizers
Too much of anything is bad, the abundance of Nitrogen causes toxicity. This can impair human health too. the use of nitrogenous fertilizers in agriculture should be used in the right proportion to enhance its efficiency.

Excessive use of nitrogenous fertilizers can pollute the water source through a process known as leaching; this is usually caused by flooding, whereby nutrients like nitrogen are washed down below the water table, hence, depositing the nutrients inside the water body.

in absence of flooding, excessive use of any fertilizer rich in nitrogen can delay fruiting in fruit-bearing crops like cucumber, watermelon, and tomato. Although all crops need nitrogen throughout their life cycle, the requirement for nitrogen decreases as the plant grows.

The maximum amount of nitrogenous fertilizers should be applied at the vegetative stage of he plant, that is before the plant flowers and the minimum quantity of such fertilize should be applied during the fruiting stage of the crop, that is, when the plant begins to bear fruits.

In conclusion,

Before you plant andy crop, try to know the recommended fertilizer application rate and apply it such that more of the nitrogen-based fertilizers are applied during the early stage of the plant and reduce the quantity as the plant grows.
