Lagos Economy To Grow Bigger Than the Rest of Nigeria

~ By HOWARD W. FRENCH, the author of China's Second Continent: How a Million Migrants are Building a New Empire in Africa, and the forthcoming Everything Under the Heavens: Empire, Tribute and the Future of Chinese Power.

Lagos, which sits in the southwestern corner of Nigeria, sprawled over a collection of islands and swampy coastlands, occupies the leading edge of this phenomenon. Today, its extraordinary growth is driving sweeping changes in a five-country region that stretches 500 miles westward along a band of palm-shaded seaboard all the way to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, a mushrooming city of perhaps six million people that has long been this region's other major economic and cultural pole.

In between them, in one of the busiest staging areas of the historic Atlantic slave trade, West Africa is laying the foundations of one of the world's biggest megalopolises, and in Lagos itself, the start of a potentially powerful new city-state.

The biggest challenge posed by the growth of Lagos and the consolidation of an enormous, sub-regional economic zone around it, however, is not to the city's minuscule neighbors. Rather, it is to Nigeria's continued existence as a unitary nation.

If present trends continue, in another decade or two, Lagos's economy will surpass the size of the rest of Nigeria.

What has held the country together in the past, however tenuously, is the redistribution of money earned from the country's oil exports. But this is changing fast, as Lagos booms and its dependence on this ever more thinly sliced revenue -- what Nigerian politicians call the "national cake" -- dwindles.

"If [Lagos's] GDP continues to rise the way it is, the federal contribution to [the city] could shrink to 5 percent," Folarin Gbadebo-Smith, the director of a leading independent Nigerian think tank, the Center for Policy Alternatives told me in an interview in his stylish offices. "What you would end up with is a virtual country. All of the parameters, absent an army, police and currency of your own, are there. We are good to go."

Don't mind the haters.

HATERS are LOSERS.

Lagos is the commercial capital of Africa.
The GDP of Lagos is twice that of Kenya, the biggest economy in East Africa.

The massive development in the state as a result of economic planning, strategies and profound research to stretch the booming magnet is paying off hereby attracting investors, infrastructure and other development.

A lot still needs to be done especially in the area of infrastructure (Housing, roads, etc) and power to feed the huge population domicile in the city.

If the current light rail gets complete with 4th mainland bridge, Eko Atlantic and capital cities couple with other forthcoming development, Lagos will not just over throw nigeria economy but may over throw beyond many more countries in Africa.

Right now, Lagos is the 7th largest economy in Africa and larger than the economy of at least 42 countries in Africa without the typical oil dependent Nigeria which means Lagos is operating based on a very very diverse economy across the board that it's GDP is inching towards Nigeria's entire GDP.

Lagos's high GDP at the moment is half of what it's going to be starting from 2018 when the ground breaking economic activities surrounding the LFTZ Dangote's largest single refinery in the world, fertilizer, LNG and petrochemicals and 12,000MW plant explodes. The potential industrial and commercial applications and IGR for the Lagos state government looks mind bugling even taxable deductions from hundreds of thousands of jobs to be generated alone before we even get to collateral taxes on goods and services and available educate manpower makes for a great future for Lagos state.

It means if Nigeria today is the largest economy in Africa, then entire economy/GDP of Lagos state inching towards and eventually toppling Nigeria's economy means Lagos state is set to be the largest economy in the whole of Africa.

The implication here is far reaching even beyond Nigeria as a country.

Why would they leave region where they are highly successful? What would be the push factors? Yes if other region and states improves with comparable infastrure it would cause some corporations to change states. Lagos is working on traffic issues with mass rail train which was said to be ready December.

I personally belive that they will move but Lagos won't fall apart over the moves. Example with my State Akwa Ibom after the port is built eventually. This would draw some traffic to eastern regions especially if the companies end consumers are in SS, SE an NE. Due to faster clearing, shipping and lower cost . That can only be accomplished with good all around infastrure on my states part with road network connecting to our neighboring states. We have biggest coastline and deep waters 18m without dredging so it's all possible.

You should be feeling sorry for yourself, your people, past and future generations of migrant workers are only successful in other people's prosperous, accommodation and progressing land instead of their own hostile, backward and unproductive land that they must abandon and go elsewhere for their daily bread.

You see, Lagos really should be the least of your worries, worry more about your own future and the future of your many generations to come abandoning your worthless and unproductive villages for their daily bread elsewhere.

Lagos existed and developed before the arrival of your forefathers so of what relevance are you to Lagos state? Lagos state getting rid of you is a plus for Lagos so good riddance.

So technically, Nigeria is impeding on Lagos growth. cheesy cheesy

I dont know why i do not believe this report. I think the analyst failed to observe that Nigeria has literally put almost all her eggs in one basket, and that basket is Lagos.

Lagos did not achieve its position without help from the FG. Its huge infrastructures were invested on it by the FG over a period of 30yrs and some govt policies have favoured her especially.

Granted, Lagos proximity to the atlantic ocean has set it apart from Abj(another city with huge federal investment) but Lagos has no known natural resource and doesn't have the landmass for industrial agriculture or animal husbandry. Lagos only has proximity to the ocean, something half a dozen other states have.

The writer failed to realise that Nigerias skewed system of governance cannot carry-on for long and when this system collapses and eventually gives way to true fiscal federalism, some monopolies and special treatment enjoyed by Lagos will cease and wealth will be more evenly distributed amongs the states who are currently being deprived by the unfortunate situation we find ourselves.

Instead of actually rising, there may just be a decline in the growth forecasts of Lagos. Any growth forcast done when the correct system is in place can actually be considered to be real. Else, every forecast is lopsided, and therefore unsustainable.
