PentiumProf:Zik as the Governor-general then collude with Balewa the Prime minister to appoint igbo indigenes as the 1st VCs of those western universities. It simply means zik political alliance with balewa brought about the emergence of igbo VC in the west. Get your fact correctly! Igbo has been practicing tribalism since time memorial. 11 Likes |

orimsamsam: True..............And that was the reason why the great doctor zik would rather be lackey to a level II teacher in the person of Balewa than team up with Awo. Or why else would a supposedly nationalist willing submit to playing lackey to a bonafide feudalist? Imagine what would have happened to yorubas on their home turf had they allowed the slimy fake nationalist to be in charge of their region in 1953? 8 Likes |

PentiumProf:I just told you it was as a result of Zik"s romance with balewa and not by merit or igbo"s literacy rate! Just like as the way buhari considers yorubas before igbos in his political appointment not that igbos are not academically qualified. 8 Likes |

T9ksy:What those niggers don't know is that their dominance in power then was a result of Zik's romance with balewa! Yorubas had overqualified technocrats then, the likes of Ayo Rosiji, Adeyemo Alakija, Fani-Kayode, Rotimi williams etc. Awo"s party were the ones playing opposition while the igbos were dinning and winning with their fulani folks. 8 Likes |

T9ksy:We headed and dominated institutions in the north and southern Cameroon as well. How come your own father's didn't become brilliant enough to get positions when the white men were using merit? Dullards. Free education indeed. You think we were as pauperised as you were. Igbos were already dominating education before the declaration of free education, Awo seeing the imbalance and the poverty in the land decided to help you lots. Yet, the education was so substandard. How many of them could speak English? That zik couldn't do it was more of an administrative problem, how come individual igbos could still send their people to school in large numbers even before that? A case study is Rochas of Imo. Imo already had/has the highest number of professors in Nigeria but the stupid governor still declared free education, which he can't sustain. And it failed . If igbos didn't give much importance to education, they wouldn't have deemed it fit to start the first indigenous university, not the extension of the London college in your area. That's some guts 8 Likes |

DaPuncline:Consolation of the highest order. So, balewa made igbos head the unis and dominate the lecturer staff, army, commerce, corporate institutions. Wow. Clap for yourself. We igbos even wished zik was that tribalistic like Awo but he wasn't. He was too nationalistic for our liking. He never did any of such nonsense in case you don't know. And it's part of our grievances with him. Sb that told igbos that God had already equipped them with grace to get whatever they want, that they don't need help. That's the person that was begging positions for igbos. My friend, as at independence, the whites handed over the next in line in all institutions. They intentionally gave power to hausas for obvious reasons. If not, zik was the most visible politician in Africa then 5 Likes |

Permit me to call this great Father of mine 'Bae'. I was studying a whole lot about him yesterday and was marveled by all he accomplished. He was born in Niger state and was fluent in Hausa like most igbos brought up in the North. His Father felt he would lose his identity and consequently sent him back to the East. He learnt Igbo language and relocated to Lagos where he picked up Yoruba language before he moved to Calabar. Show me a firm believer in the One Nigerian project and Pan African Nationalism and i will point at the Zik of Africa. His sojourn in different parts of Nigeria made him believe in One Nigeria just like a lot Igbos who have found themselves outside igboland embrace the colours of their host communities. He was not just a leader,he was accomplished in the field of Journalism, Sports, Academics and Politics. 3 Likes |

CliffordOrji: U forget to mention his first major error... FORCING THE NORTH TO BE PART OF AN INDEPENDENT NIGERIA. The north NEVER wanted anything to do with the south, azikiwe toasted, coerced and ultimately sent UK messages to compel the north to be part of the marriage. Today ironically igbos want to divorce but the north like a lazy housewife with no prospects for financial buoyancy after divorce vehemently refuses lols. ok obafemi awolowo wanted to include right to secede in our constitution AZIKIWE wrote Britain to accuse awolowo of treason. Those 2 grave errors are still affecting us southerners till this day. B4 u mention azikiwe how bout ojukwu who was rewarded with chieftaincy title for his cowardice. --in btw i'm pro-nigeria. 6 Likes |

YourNemesis:Lliteracy has nothing to do with a University. Literacy is the ability to read and write. A secondary school graduate is literate, and a Waec certificate can fetch you a good job in the Colonial administration in those days. Igbos had no University before 1960 but there were higher colleges like Nigerian College of Arts,Science and Technology Enugu. But when we had our University,it was the First Indigenious University in Nigeria and we started offering Degrees before your Ibadan. 4 Likes |

InyinyaAgbaOku:I know the truth about how Zik romanced with Balewa to made igbos in charge of western universities can never be heard on Radio Biafra. Just look at it from this angle: when GEJ recently established some Fed. Uni in nigeria, he made Prof. Ibidapo-Obe to be in charge of the one in Ebonyi, Prof. Aluko was in charge of the one in Bayelsa, Prof. Chinedu Nebo was in charge of the one in Ekiti. So from your conclusion are you saying there was no igbo Prof. that jonathan could appoint to be in charge of the fed uni in ebonyi ? Or no yoruba man is fit enough to handle ekiti's own ? It is purely political which is same as what Zik and Balewa did to the western university then. You even said zik was the most visible politician in africa then ? What about Patrice Lumumba, Jomo Kenyattta, Kenneth Kaunda, Haile seilaisse, Kwame Nkrumah etc. You must be joking! 10 Likes |

CliffordOrji:This story of betrayal is getting boring. Zik is one of Nigeria's founding fathers. No one destroys his own family. He cannot be involved in the discussion of the dissolution of his family. Ojukwu betrayed/disobeyed his own father by declaring war which ultimately led to the death of Louis Ojukwu. Zik gave the Igbo political identity in Nigeria. Yes Zik had to leave the east because Ojukwu has already started jailing people of contrary opinions. What do you mean by "greedily fought"? He and his party were simply popular everywhere. He would have been the Premier if Awolowo had not played the ethnic card. If I may ask what have you done for your region? Why is your name not known like that of the Great Zik of Africa? |

DaPuncline:If Igbos have been tribalistic, you wouldn't have found them all over Nigeria changing and contributing to the socio-economy of their host communities. You wouldn't find them embracing other cultures and learning other languages to their own detriment. If Igbos were Tribalistic, Azikiwe wouldn't have put hands together with the Ijebu Yorubas to fight a political party. If Igbos are Tribalistic, why was a Fulani man appointed the first Mayor of Enugu? Till Jesus comes, there are no group of people who are as multilingual/cultural as igbos and found in all parts of Nigeria yet they become the first target of illiterate blood suckers. I understand that Nairaland is full of Ignorant, childish tribalists. 3 Likes |

Go and sit down you are misrepresenting facts go and read your history properly.CliffordOrji post=50336194]As a true Nwafo Igbo I am often perplexed whenever I read/hear my Ummuna brothers refer to Nnamdi Azikiwe as a Hero. For those who do not know; Nnamdi Azikiwe betrayed we Igbos. He was the one that composed the Biafran National Anthem, but ironically, during the heat of the Biafran civil war, Azikiwe ran away from Biafran. He defected to Nigeria and supported the Nigerian governemnt in the killing of his on Biafran people. Obafemi Awolowo's free education policy amongst many other is a legacy the Yoruba's can regard to as the achievement of the defunct western region; what can we Igbos point to as Nnamdi Azikiwe's achievment in the eastern region? Nothing !! For those who do not know; prior to the 1950's, Nnamdi Azikiwe left Igboland, he went to Yorubaland and greedily fought both tooth and nail to become the leader of the western regional house of assembly at Ibadan. Awolow's political party A.G defeted Azikiwe's NCNC and disgracefully sent him back to Igboland. When he came back to Alaigbo what did he do for we Igbos? Nothing!! Even this particular university we are beating our chest about was built many years after about more than five generation of Yoruba's had been going to the University in England. Chinua Achebe the greatest academia in Igboland had his own university education in Yorubaland at the University College of Ibadan [/quote] |
