Do you feel embarrassed and uncomfortable by how much and how frequent you sweat? Though sweating is natural and entirely normal when you exert yourself or nervous. It is also normal if you release excessive sweats as a result of a heated environment. However, if you tend to sweat too easily without any apparent reason to an extent your clothes and wears get visibly soaked or wet, it’s plausible that you are suffering from a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis.

“Let’s say that the temperature is mild, and you are not anxious and don’t have a fever, you are just watching a movie with your family,” says Dr Dee Glaser of the American Association of Dermatology. If you are just sitting there sweating profusely, that’s not normal”

Sweating helps the body stay cool. But people suffering from excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis tend to sweats unnecessary, even when the body does not require cooling.

Excess sweating can affect everyday activities (turning a doorknob, holding a pen, or sweats wetting your work papers), experts say it can also lead to skin infections like athlete’s foots and jock itch.

Signs you are might have hyperhidrosis

If you sweat a lot at night, sweating immediately after waking up, sweating from one part of the body (one armpit, feet or hands) or from all part of the body not just your head, face, underarms, groins, hands or feet, then there are huge chance you have a localized or general hyperhidrosis condition.

If you think, you are suffering from hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, it is highly recommended to see a certified dermatologist.

Ways to help you can control excessive sweating.

Apply antiperspirants
– certain over the counter antiperspirants sprays, lotions or creams help reduce sweating by plugging or blocking your sweat glands. This process signals the sweat glands to stop producing much sweat. It is recommended to use antiperspirants instead of deodorants to control excessive sweats. When applying antiperspirants, ensure you follow correctly the direction for use stated on the packaging.

Botox – The injection of botox is the approved treatment to control excessive sweating in the armpit, it works by hindering the nerves from triggering excessive sweating.

Monitor your sweats triggers
– there are certain actions or triggers of excessive sweats in people. It is important you know or keep a journal of what triggers your excessive sweating and avoid those things. Excessive sweating triggers could be anxiety, hot sauce, or certain drinks such as caffeine and alcohol.

Medications: There are drugs that work well and stop the sweat glands from producing excessive sweats. Ensure you consult a dermatologist for prescriptions.

Change footwear regularly
– sweaty or wet feet can lead to other health problems like feet odour and skin infections. To control sweaty feet, ensure you shoes made from natural materials such as leather and avoid socks made of cotton. Allow your feet to breathe whenever the situation allows by wearing sandals.

According to experts, there a lot of conditions and diseases that can cause hyperhidrosis (excessive sweats) such as menopause, pregnancy, diabetes, alcoholism, tuberculosis, arthritis, heart failure and cancer. Hence, it is important you seek medical assistance as soon as possible to ascertain your excessive sweating is not as a result of an underlying health condition.

Getting it diagnosed and treated sooner rather than could make a whole world of difference.
