The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday re-arraigned a former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, before a Federal High Court in Lagos for an alleged fraud of N2.7bn.

Kalu was re-arraigned along with two others on 34 counts of money laundering before Justice Mohammed Idris.

His co-defendants were Udeh Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Limited.

The re-arraignment of the accused on Monday followed the transfer of their case from the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to the Lagos division.

The accused had earlier been arraigned on September 27, 2016 before Justice Anwuri Chikere of the Abuja division of the court.

But the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, subsequently transferred the case to Lagos, leading to the re-arraignment of the accused on Monday.

The 34 counts pressed against Kalu and others border on money laundering.

The EFCC, in the charges, alleged that while he was governor of Abia State, Kalu siphoned funds running into over N2.7bn from the state’s treasury.

The ex-governor was accused of diverting state funds into the account of Slok Nigeria Limited, a company, the EFCC claimed was owned by Kalu and his family members.

Kalu was said to have allegedly diverted the funds in tranches of N200m, N50m, N200m, N300.8m, N545m, N429m, N288.4m, N190m, N157m, N152.8m, N100m, N84m and N50m between August 13, 2003 and January 12, 2005.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 17 (c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2003 and punishable under Section 16 of the same Act.

The EFCC accused Slok Nigeria Limited of conniving with one Emeka Abone, said to be at large, to help Kalu retain the allegedly stolen funds in its accounts, when Slok Nigeria Limited “knew or at least suspected the said Orji Uzor Kalu to have engaged in a criminal conduct.”

The EFCC said the company is liable to punishment under Section 16 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2004.

The 2nd defendant, Udeogu, was accused of helping Kalu to pay part of the allegedly stolen funds into the account of Slok Nigeria Limited with the defunct FinBank Plc.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 427 of the Criminal Code Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.
Consequently, the prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Adebisi Adeniyi, asked the court for a trial date.

However, Kalu’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), informed the court that his client had earlier been arraigned and granted bail and urged Justice Idris to allow him continue on the existing bail.

Ozekhome said, “We are seeking the court’s discretion for the first defendant to continue on the existing bail granted to him on April 20, 2008 by Justice Adamu Bello.

“Since this matter has started, he has not jumped bail. He is an employer of labour; therefore, he will not undermine this court.”

On the his part, counsel for the 2nd defendant, Mr. Solo Akuma (SAN), also urged Justice Idris to allow his client to continue on the existing bail granted to him, assuring the court that his client would make himself available for his trial.

“The second accused person is a retired permanent secretary and his wife is a judge of the Federal High Court,” Akuma added.

In response, the prosecutor said he was not opposed to the application to allow the defendants to continue on their existing bail.

Consequently, Justice Idris ordered the defendants to continue on their existing bail.
Kalu had earlier vehemently opposed the transfer of his case from Abuja to Lagos.

EFCC must have arraigned and re-arraigned him more than 5 times in the last 10 years. How can a case against a man take so long to resolve?

I dont know why it took this long. This guy claimed he went to Barewa College, it was debunked. He claimed as a student in University of Maiduguri he fought alongside student leaders from Unilag, UI, OAU, ABU, Nsukka and Uniben during the Alli Must Go uprising, it was debunked. He has claimed he was already multibillionaire before becoming governor but nobody could locate his business empire before then.

Kalu is believed to have exaggerated his academic and career resume to legitimize his ill gotten wealth.

This is one of the sons of alaibo that contributed to severe depravation and development deficits leading to retardation of Ibo political progress in this country.

There is no saint amongst Nigerian politicians when it comes to corruption but some political thieves left developments and progress behind, Kalu left nothing! Ibos should rise against a leader like Kalu. He took all the money he looted from Abia treasury and sank them into investments in other regions.

Two Nigeria ex-governors arrested
Abia State Governor Uzor Orji Kalu
Orji Kalu denies money laundering allegations
Nigeria's anti-graft agency has arrested two former governors accused of corruption and money laundering.
Saminu Turaki, a sitting MP and Orji Kalu, who lost a bid for Nigeria's presidency in last April's polls were arrested in Abuja, officials say.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had invited almost all of Nigeria's 36 former governors for questioning over graft allegations.

Mr Kalu and Mr Turaki were the only two that refused to turn up, the EFCC says.

Sule Lamido, who succeeded Mr Turaki as governor in Jigawa State, had recently alleged that the former governor left him an empty treasury when he stepped down last May.

Mr Turaki denies the allegations and says his successor is merely "playing politics".

The EFCC has also accused Orji Kalu of money laundering and diverting public money into family businesses, accusations the former governor flatly denies.

You Yorubas claim to be 'sophisticated' but guys act like you dont have even a rudimentary knowledge of the law, especially since the dullardarian of Daura came in.

I hold no brief for Kalu but the law says that a person is innocent until a competent court says otherwise. It is not for you or me to say that Kanu was corrupt, it is for the prosecution.

This barbaric " bury him before he dies" attitude that the Yoruba nation has adopted since their disgrace of a leader, Buhari, came in has exposed Yorubas as a people who are best given a wide distance.

**** Kalu is the exact fit to lead **** you.

Barewa College has Old Students Association. None had recollection of him. Granted only few Southerners were ex students, so it would be hard not to remember the yanmiri boy, if indeed he was a student. Unimaid did not participate in student riots of Alli must go but all the Unis were shut to prevent spread. So which students did he actually join in the protest and at which Uni?

Now, do you need a court of law to prove the guy a corrupt and habitual fraud?

In Abia State, please point to top 5 legacies left by Kalu. The barawo was governor from 99 to 07, eight years!

Like I said, no governor should steal but we know thats a hard call in Nigeria, and a governor that steals and left his state in depravation is a cruel being. Kalu was cruel to Abians, and Iboland generally. He was one of those people put their hope on and he let them down big time! You guys need leaders like Obiano, Soludo, Biancah (is she still married to your warlord?)

Can't you make an investigation and get a cast iron evidence that can stick ?

I have learned not to join issues with people from your side, you know why? Because most of you, including Chinua Achebe don't reason constructively when it comes to politics.

You people claim to be very intelligent but you still elect people like T.A Orji into the senate after 'stoning' him in Aba for non-performance, not even under performance.

Your leaders, including Saraki, know quite well that your conscience can be easily commercialized so far there is money in it, that is why you can roll drum in supports of corrupt people regardless of religion and tribe. I thank God so much because he did not make come from that side.
