No it is not. The problem is the coinage of that acronym 'DSS' which is not known to law. They are properly called the 'SSS' which is a constitutionally established body directly under the supervision of the Presidency. Personnel may be drawn from the police or other security agencies or from qualified members of the public but they have no hierarchical or operational link with the police outside of inter-agency collaboration. 4 Likes |

The military, DSS, NIA, DIA, FRSC, CUSTOM, IMMIGRATION, PRISONS, DRUGS LAW etc came out from the Nigeria police. DSS is the only intelligence organization operating within Nigeria. the state security service aka DSS started as E- Branch in the Nigeria police force. after the civil war the then head of state, faced with so many security challenges and because of the exigencies of the period, the E- Branch metamorphosed to national security organization (NSO) by decree number ............ meanwhile, immediately after the coup of 1986 the head of state gen babagida perceived the NSO to be a serious threat to his regime and because of the powers of the NSO to investigate and monitor the activities of both military, civilians, foreigners etc decided to split the NSO into three different security organization namely: state security service (SSS), national intelligence agency (NIA) and defence intelligence agency (DIA) in order to reduced their powers. all the above named organization are established by law. hence they are not under the Nigeria police force. just my little cent. 7 Likes |

dss is under nobody..only under the nigerian constitution ... dss can arrest anybody,anytime that is violating the constitution and detain them as long as they like... kanu never knew that..he thought he was arrested by normal nigerian police..zoo indeed.. when dss arrest you,then your matter is already national-security treat... kanu is finish... they will execute him according to the constitution... you people dont understand what dss is... you are surprised that a black nation can have something like fbi,cia,mi5 or kgb....... dss=department for states security fbi=federal bureau of investigations kanu was practicaly arrested by the nigerian-fbi.. that is unusual.. 6 Likes |

meccuno: its not off topic..the topic is,what dss is.. dss is the nigerian version of the american fbi or cia or the russian kgb...they are not under your common police... i added kanu so that you understand the dss more and understand how crazy kanu's case is... normaly dss dont go out arresting people...its not usual ..... 8 Likes |

freeze001:Thanks for the effort but please note that DSS personnel CANNOT be drawn from the Police or any other security agencies. At inception as NSO in 1976, it was the then E branch of the Police that became NSO. In 1986, NSO was broken up into 3 agencies -SSS, NIA and DIA. DSS employs i.e. recruits and trains its own operatives. 1 Like |

Op, DSS is NOT under the Police at all but historically, it emerged from the E Branch of the Police as NSO in 1976 and broken into 3 agencies in 1986 as per my earlier comments. Unfortunately, there is a lot of regrettable rivalry between some of these agencies instead of collaborating for the common good. 3 Likes |
