Jonathan Was Never Committed To Defeating Boko Haram – Osinbajo by Eltigre7: 2:08am On Nov 01, 2016
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo said on Monday that despite what his administration might want people to believe, former President Goodluck Jonathan was never committed to ending the Boko Haram insurgency during his tenure.

Osinbajo said this in a lecture titled, “The unraveling of Boko Haram and the rebuilding of the North-East of Nigeria” which he delivered at the Harvard University’s Weatherland Centre for International Affairs, United States.

The Vice-President’s media office made the speech available to journalists on Monday.

While attributing his position to many factors, Osinbajo said it was politically convenient for the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party to claim that the Boko Haram sect was sponsored by a northern-Muslim political elite to discredit the government led by a Christian.

He recalled that when the All Progressives Congress was formed, the then ruling party was also quick to paint it (APC) as the political wing of the Boko Haram sect.

He said it was not until President Muhammadu Buhari who was then the leader of the opposition, was nearly killed in an attack in Kaduna that the false narrative began to lose credibility.

The Vice-President added, “Secondly, the ruling party also somewhat cynically seemed to have considered that since BH attacks were actually in the heartland of the opposition it was not necessarily an unwelcome development as it could only weaken the opposition.

“Third, extensive corruption in arms procurement estimated at about $15bn, ensured that the military remained poorly equipped and demoralised.

“A number of well-publicised mutinies occurred and troops involved were taken through widely unpopular court-martials.

“As the government dithered and equivocated BH proceeded to realise the objective of occupying territory and establishing Islamist states in Nigeria and in the Lake Chad basin.

“In Borno State alone, it occupied and hoisted its flag in 20 of the 27 Local Government Areas that constituted the state. In Adamawa State, BH took Mubi and some villages in Yobe State.”

Osinbajo said it was not until the abduction of more than 200 secondary schoolgirls from their dormitories in Chibok that public outrage against Jonathan’s government’s inept handling of the insurgency reached its peak.

He added that the government then incurred widespread anger when it denied that an abduction took place and suggested that the opposition had simply invented the story.

Osinbajo, however, said Buhari’s assumption of office changed the tide.

He said the strongest reasons for Buhari’s victory in the March 2015 presidential election was the expectation that going by his reputation as a no-nonsense soldier, he would defeat Boko Haram and restore peace to the North-East.

True to type, he said within six months of Buhari’s Presidency, the sect had been effectively dislodged from all the local governments they once held and had retreated into the Sambisa Forest and the northern border towns and villages.

He said the terrorists’ military capacity had been severely degraded and their supply lines effectively blocked.

Osinbajo said the ability of Boko Haram to get willing suicide bombers remained a mystery.

The truth hurts, but VP Osinbajo seems to be right.

The way boko haram spiraled out of control under GEJ is mind boggling. Given that Yar'dua did not waste time in cutting them to size.

Another confirmation that GEJ purposely left them to fester was in the way the military was now able to record some victories against them 6 weeks to the election.

When GEJ realised that the boko haram issue was going to affect him at the polls as against being an advantage, it was then he gave a marching order to the military to push them back.

And to the surprise of many, the military that has been loosing countless battles against boko haram for the past 2 years was now able to record victories again boko haram in 6 weeks.

Something they have been unable to do in 2 years!

Anybody that does not agree that this is fishy needs to have his/her brain examined. And we have also heard and seen documents where the fighter jets and other weapons they claimed they bought was never bought, and in some cases grounded and cannibalised equipment was delivered while the Army and Air force chiefs smiled to the banks.

In many cases, the National Security Adviser used money meant to pursue a war to finance PDP election.

Does this show seriousness and a commitment to defeat boko haram??

GEJ does not know strategic planning. He got it all wrong. He thought boko haram will destabilise the major places PMB will gain votes from.

When it became obvious that the exact opposite is what was going to happen, that was when they panicked, postponed the elections and then properly mobilised the military to degrade the boko haram to an extent.

You need to properly assess and consider the past before you can properly manage the future.

I hope you saw that Buhari did not sack the service chiefs immediately.

He properly got an history of boko haram from them before letting them go.

The mistakes of the past will continue to be documented in books and speeches to guide the coming generation.

All the mistakes and ills of past governments of Nigeria are well documented. In fact, they have all been used as research materials at one time or the other.

GEJ will not be an exception. All his mistakes, ill-decisions and miscalculations will also be assessed for years to come.

When PMB concludes his term in office, his own records will also be there for discussion and scrutiny for years to come.

Please Agabusta, hope you are paid for your services.

To the topic, Mr. osinbajo take your time o. Because you guys managed to rescue some girls (whom I don't believe were ever even missing sef), doesn't give you the right to criticize an administration you know nothing about. When will this blame game end?

I ain't a fan of Jonathan, but truth be told, I also believed (still do to some extent) that the whole Chibok saga was a scam, a wise political propaganda by the opposition. (now, if I'm wrong, May God forgive me).
But it just seems strange that kidnappers will keep their victim for over 1 year, feed, bore them and even marry some sef.

It just defeats the purpose of kidnapping.

Might be true, but really hard to believe.

the single answer is the north never was committed to offer helping hands to fight bokoharam alongside gej..

Only northerner can end bokoharam..

Let a northerner kill fellow northerners so that we won't hear stories of "you killed our young men"..

Go and read buharis comments back then and also go find out how the sss(northerners) sabotaged gejs effort by divulging infos to bokoharam before clamp downs on them...
