Yes more cores means more processing power but do you really know why we have quad core octave core decade core processors. It's not really about speed of the work but it's more of trying to get more out of battery life as if one core was to do all the work it will consume a lot of battery .
Think of it this way. When a software is running the task may not be split into smaller tasks so that each core works on separate part of the software.no this would only be possible if the software is written to take advantage of the available number of cores. As it is now most software to date have not been written to do this and it's pretty hard writing those kinds of software. so why do we have this multi core processora on our phones. The answer is this ,using a quad core as an example when a software is run on the processors and a heavy one at that core one starts execution and then imidiately hands control to core two to take over for where it stopped and then to core 3 and then to core 4 and then back to core 1. This cycle means that one core does not spend time running intensive software as that would cause it to draw more power which will impact on battery life.
Think of it this way. If 4 men were to break a large piece of wood and they both have axes.
If one decided to spend more time on the wood he would be drained so man 1 axes the wood then man 2 axes the wood then man 3 to man 4 and then back to man 1 all the while man 1 would have regained his strength so technically after successfully cutting the wood to pieces you find out that the total energy expended by each man is far lesser than what it would have been if one man went it alone.
This is why we have multi core processors as it helps get the job done while using minimal battery power or at least in theory that's the main reason for having them as battery technology has not improved at all over the years and we looking for ways to get more juice out of our battery.
That being said you need to know that not all multicores are faster I mean a dual core can be faster than a quad core and a quad core can be faster than an octa core.

This is the reason why apples iPhone is one of the fastest if not fastest phones in the world and you notice they usually stick with dual core processors and these dual core processors are faster than a typical android quad core processor.
This is because apple concentrated on improving the number of IPS their processors can handle.

But what I have said so far is one of the reasons we have multicore processors in our phones.
If today we found a way to have more battery juice and battery technology improved rapidly then we would not need to have these multicores processors.

one major reason those multi core exist is battery but not necessarily one core pass work to the other for battery sake but for efficiency for example a quad core processor will have two low power cores and two high power cores the two low power cores will kick in when chatting,browsing, SMS, calling and reading while the the two high power core will kick in to gear when watching video or streaming video and ofcourse the major reason to make mobile phone powerful ...playing modern combat 5 and the likes
