SCENE 1

(Amuche the first maid walked in through the door where the GUARDS were standing, carrying a wrapped clothe on her palms. OLAMMA after a while walked in through the same door, carrying same wrapped clothes. EKWEDIKE one of the palace GUARDS stopped her, interacted with her in a friendly way before she continued. ONOWU entered, after some minutes. The two palace GUARDS greeted him. ONOWU told them that he came to see the KING).

(Onowu entered)
EKWEDIKE: Onowu, you are welcome.
EMENIKE: You are welcome Onowu.
ONOWU: My sons, how are you doing?
THE TWO PALACE GUARD: We are fine, sir.
We are fine, sir.
ONOWU: Please am here to see the King, he sent for me.
EKWEDIKE: OK, He is inside.

(EKWEDIKE escorted him to the sitting room of the palace and told him to wait while he calls the king.)

(He walks to the King’s door)
EKWEDIKE: (Knocking at the king’s door) …your majesty
KING NELSON: Who is at the door?
EKWEDIKE: Your majesty is Ekwedike.
King NELSON: OK, what is the problem?
EKWEDIKE: Your majesty, Onowu wants to see you.
King NELSON: OK, please tell him that I will be with him soon.

(After informing the King, Emenike returns to his duty post.)

EMENIKE: Onowu, your majesty is coming.
ONOWU: Thank you my son.

(Coming out from his room, the King met Onowu waiting for him.)

KING: Ha! Onowu, you are here already.
ONOWU: My King may you live long.
KING: May our ancestors protect you.
ONOWU: Isee
KING: How is your family?
ONOWU: They are doing well
KING: How is your wife?
ONOWU: She is fine, how is the palace?
KING: Fine
ONOWU: Yes I can see,
ONOWU: My King this one you sent for me, I hope there is no problem?
KING: Yes, I sent for you, because our people say that “a toad does not run in a broad-day light in vain”. If something is not pursuing it, then it must be pursuing something.
ONOWU: That is true my King, but I hope all is well?
KING: All is not, Onowu. I sent for you because I know you have been of a good friend to our family, despite that you are the Onowu.
ONOWU: Your grace is immeasurable, my King.
KING: Please, I am talking about my only child Prince Emeka.
ONOWU: My King, I hope all is well
KING: Yes all is well, but only that I need your advice concerning his future. I want to send him abroad so that he can go overseas to study. Equally, I want to teach him our customs and traditions before it’s too late.
ONOWU: You are saying the right thing my King, but I want to suggest one thing.
KING: Go ahead; this is the reason why I called you.
ONOWU: My King I think the best thing is to keep him under watch.
KING: what do you mean?
ONOWU: In mean that we can send him in one of the best schools in this country and monitor his movements, instead of sending him abroad, where he may end up marrying all this Oyibo girls who will only throw away our customs and traditions all in the name of acquiring money and development.
KING: You are right, but what if he ends up marrying from a poor family instead of from a royal or rich family.
ONOWU: We can call him now to teach him the way he should follow and he will not depart from it.
KING: ONOWU, you are right.
ONOWU: I believe he will listen to us.
KING: He will, I know my son.

(OLAMMA passed by as she greets the King and Onowu.)
OLAMMA: Greetings your majesty, Onowu you are welcome.
KING: Nhm, Ola!
OLAMMA: Yes your majesty.
KING: Call the Prince for me; tell him that I want to see him right away.
OLAMMA: Yes your majesty.

(She walks out to the Prince’s door to call him)

OLAMMA: Your highness. (Knocking at the door…) My Prince,
PRINCE: Yes! Who is there?
OLAMMA: Is Ola, My Prince.
PRINCE: Oh! Ola
OLAMMA: Yes my Prince
PRINCE: What is it?
OLAMMA: Your highness, the King wants to see you at the sitting room.
PRINCE: Ok, go and tell him that am coming.
OLAMMA: Yes my Prince

(She comes out to tell the King that the Prince is coming)

OLAMMA: Your majesty, the Prince said that he is coming.
KING: Ok, you can go.
OLAMMA: Yes your majesty.

(The PRINCE enters from the back door of the sitting room)

PRINCE: Good day father, Onowu you are welcome.
ONOWU: Thank you my Prince, how are you doing?
PRINCE: I am fine.
PRINCE: Father, you sent for me?
KING: Yes my son, I sent for you.
PRINCE: I hope all is well.
KING: Yes my son, all is well. I called you to tell you something very important.
PRINCE: Ok.
KING: You see, ever since I lost your mum on the very act of giving birth to you, it has not been easy for me concerning your future. I have discussed with Onowu concerning you’re the issue and I decided to send you into one of the best schools in this country. I will also like you not to associate with poor people. Don’t even think of having any funny affair with all these poor girls in the town, because I will not allow my family to be limited to that level.
PRINCE: But father, why did…
ONOWU: My Prince, you see, you are so lucky to have a father like yours. As the one who will succeed your father when the time comes, you not only need to keep off from all these poor ‘things’ (people), but also you need to associate with the rich; people of your class and most importantly the royal families. Just listen to your father’s words of advice, he will not fool you or give you a wrong advice. You know this much.
KING: My son, before you go for your youth service, we will find a wife for you, a wife who will make you happy always, but even as that you can equally present one who is from a royal family or a rich family. Otherwise we will arrange one for you, Ok.
PRINCE: Yes father
ONOWU: That’s our Prince
PRINCE: I will try to do as you said; I will tell you when I find my wife, ok?
KING: Please do, so that you can marry on time to qualify for the throne.
PRINCE: Thank you father, Onowu, thank you.

(He left them)
KING: Onowu, you have just given me another life today.
ONOWU: You are the true King, and your son will be a true King just like you.
KING: I pray o. may the gods answer your prayers.

(They were saying all these as the KING escorts ONOWU out of the house)

KING: Onowu, thank you so much.
ONOWU: I will always do my best, your majesty.
KING: Ok! See you next time.
ONOWU: Alright.

(The two Guards said fare well greetings to Onowu, as he goes back to his house. The Guards went to answer the King’s call as they all went out of the stage.)
