There was a fire outbreak at the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2 on Thursday morning.

According to sources at the airport, the fire which started at about 6.10am began at the engineering department of Dana Airlines.

The source, an employee of the airport, who spoke on conditions of anonymity, disclosed that the fire was as a result of electrical faults from the building.

"Before fire fighters came, some aircraft parts of the airline were already affected by the fire," the source said, adding, "Most of these airlines have their engineering departments at this terminal where they keep their equipment."

Reacting to the development, Amos Olajide, operations and telecommunications manager for Dana Airlines, admitted that the fire affected their engineering department, but did not reveal the extent of damage. "The fire was put out promptly, and there was no disruption of flight operations," he said.

Meanwhile, the source at the airport disclosed that the airline's management had before now informed the terminal managers of the impending danger, stressing that the terminal operators promised to fix the problem, but did not do so until the outbreak.

Efforts to speak with Gbenga Odugbesan, head of corporate affairs for the terminal, was not successful, as he responded neither to the phone calls nor text massages as at the time of filing the report.

Debola Wajekodun, facility manager for the terminal in a statement said "The fire was put out within 10 minutes utilising the fire-fighting equipment installed as part of the facility at the terminal, including a sophisticated hydrant system."
