ULTIMATE LEASH TRAINING GUIDE : HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DOG (OR PUPPY) TO WALK ON A LEASH ?

Leash training can be an exhaustin task wether we’re talking about a dog or a puppy.

In Petfunzies.com, we’re always up to the challenge, and today, we will discuss something a lot of people are having a hard time with : leash training.

There is a difference between dogs and puppies when it comes to training, so we will discuss them separately.

WE’LL ANSWER THESE 3 QUESTIONS :

Puppy leash training : how to train a PUPPY to walk on a leash ?
Dog Leash training : how to train a DOG to walk on a leash ?
Stop pulling me ! how to stop your dog from pulling on the leash ?
Quick Tip : You can skip to the relevant part for your dog.

PART 1 : PUPPY LEASH TRAINING 101

When your starting to leash train your puppy, remember it might take a while for him to learn, and be patient.

We recommend you start by putting the collar on your puppy right away, and then attach a light leash to his collar and let him walk and drag it around, so he will get used to the feeling. Supervise him to make sure he doesn’t get tangled up.

Is he more comfortable with his new leash ? great. Next, hold the leash and follow him around for a while, then try to make him follow you by calling him. Remember the rule of thumb : if he does a good job, praise him physically and verbally (by hugging or patting), otherwise you want to discourage his behavior, use gestures and facial expressions, say NO! or STOP! with an authoritative tone of voice.

Quick Tip : like babies, puppies grow extremely fast, make sure the leash and collar are still in the right size for him.

Some puppies learn faster than others, don’t compare your puppy to other puppies. Repeat the process until he feels comfortable with his leash and you walking him around, it will happen eventually

PART 2 : DOG LEASH TRAINING 101

Most dogs will have no problem with a leash, however, if your dog has never been leashed trained, or is still having problems walking with a leash, there are a few things you can do.

Start with attaching the leash to his collar and let him dragging it around so he’ll get used to the feeling.( same process done with puppies). When he seem to ignore the leash you can pick it up and follow him around, he most likely will wander off with you wherever you take him.

Encourage him to follow you around with an exciting treat, then guide him and praise him (‘good boy!’).

If he won’t get out of the house, use the treat to lure him out, he’ll get out in no-time, pulling you with him!

PART 3 : HOW TO STOP DOGS & PUPPIES FROM PULLING

Why is my dog pulling ? is an very common question among dog owners.

The reason dogs are pulling is simple. They are curious about their surroundings: the sights, the scents and the objects in their environment and want to ‘check them out’. You will need to teach you dog to respect you and slow down when you are walking him.

DOG PULLING STOPS HERE – how to stop your dog from pulling the leash

Below are a few simple steps to train your dog to stop pulling, for that you will need a few things :

Find an environment without many distraction (preferable an open field or a quiet area).
Get your dogs training leash and treats
Have patience ( sadly it can’t be bought anywhere, you’ll have to work on it yourself ! )
THE TRAINING PROCESS :

Attach the leash to your best friend ( we’re talking dogs, we wouldn’t recommend leashing a human friend).
Firmly hold the leash with both hand, wrap the leash around your right or left hand.
Command your dog to start walking : ” lets go, buddy ! ”
If he starts pulling or walking too fast, say ” easy, buddy ! ” and resist to him slightly. Make sure you’re not choking him.
Praise him when he slows down. give him a treat and say ” good job buddy ! ”
Repeat the process until you see your dog getting adapted to it.
Quick Tip : if your dog is too strong for you to hold on, ask a friend who is physically stronger than you to help.

You may want to consider buying an adjustable pulling harness, to have a better grip on your dog and prevent him from hurting himself, in case he is strong and pulling hard. Our recommendation when it comes to pulling harness is ultra paws pulling harness, which is padded and very durable.

LAST BARKS & THOUGHTS –

We hope you now know how to train your dog (or puppy) to walk on a leash.

Remember it will take time, energy, patience and effort, from both you and your dog, but eventually, you will both learn to do it. While leash training can be challenging, it can be very fun, it all depends on how you look at it.

Be positive, have a good attitude about it. If you tend to get annoyed fast, maybe you should ask someone to help, theres no shame in that !

wow, thank you for this guide, as I bought a good dog leash in order to train my god. By the way, did you know that choosing a dog leash is a difficult occupation? Frankly speaking, it's really difficult, because there is a wide variety of dog leashes in the price, quality and convenience. To be honest, I even typed this in the internet and got an article about the best retractable dog leash, and with the help of this article I decided to buy Triton retractable dog leash, as in the article it was said that this dog leash is convenient for the god.
