I carefully read what Atiku reportedly said. Whilst I neither love nor loathe him, I totally agree with everything he reportedly said. Most Nigerian university graduates are certificated but uneducated. To cite an example, the other day, the HOD of English at Uni Ilorin, one Dr Idiagbon, responded in a video recording to allegations of sexual misconduct. It's hard to believe that guy was HOD English. Besides, many Nigerian university graduates lack critical thinking and logical reasoning. I've written here in the past about shoddy publications of Nigerian university lecturers and professors - the quality is simply abysmal.

Preach it my friend. Education improves your mind and elevates your reasoning. It helps you process a mental task with better dexterity... High IQ for mathematics and science can only be spotted in the process of good education...and after that, with reinforced focus-based instruction and guidance it can be burnished to shine bright.

An intelligent mind that lacks intelligent instruction will perform no better than a dull mind.

@Babdap, i concur with u. Why Atiku, and Obasanjo had not established University before getting unto power. After, they had bastardized our university system. Atiku is now talking thrash. Foool, Daft, Nincopoop!!!

Could forumites recur how many times our tertiary institutions went on strike during their administration. After they had looted our treasury, and went ahead to established Bell University of Tech, and American University of Nigeria.

May be after Buhari Administration, he (buhari) also will go ahead to establish FULANI UNIVERSITY OF HERDSMAN, Daura.

Ahh, it's terrible, there's nothing we wouldn't c n dz country..... It's because we have decided to be slaves n our very own country, nobody is talking, everyone is silent afraid of his head. In those days u can't go to a tertiary institution n d presence of students and make such comments.... They will stone him. But this is what we have been reduced to by our politicians
let me not even begin to lament of the state of things because the average Nigerian man is being bullied every single day by this politicians and he lives in oblivion of it everyday. they (Atiku included) have reduced the average man to a state in which his goal is to meet the basic need of life that he has no time or enthusiasm to be creative or stand up for himself against a government that cares less about him.if Atiku had invested the money he stole in his eight years to the so called "public university" he is insulting today maybe they would have been able to produce graduates up to his taste .He has a hand in the state of the federal university and as such should not be ranting as he cannot point one infrastructure or single thing he did in all his eight years to better the institutions in any way.such a hooligan.

While some of the points you made are accurate, mastery of english language should not be an expectation for a non english person. Those who attain expertise in its usage should not be ranked above those who struggle to communicate in it. In other words, we need a new lingua for mainstream communication, one through which we find comfort and true expression for the range of emotions and impulses in our spirits. English language comes short for full expression of our emotions through the tongue.

Moreover, those who saw private schools as cash cow were instrumental and made it possible for total cannibalization of public schools. By decreasing the odds of failure in public schools they increased the odds of success in their for-profit schools and we ended with a very wide gap, a differentiator that has now become an involuntary tool for oppressing and eliminating poor children from secured future.

@bolded is so on point, the middle class is gradually disappearing from our social strata, our leaders are bent on turning the strata into "the rich and everyone else" . They know education is the only way to bridge that gap

Everybody in Nigeria wants a hand-down from the government.

A number of prestigious Universities abroad generate their own funding. University professors and researchers initiate researches and study projects that attract millions of dollars to the institutions in form of grants.

Solutions to society's problems begin with these researches and projects. When government or the private sector sees a promising research project, they provide assistance by way of funding. Private corporations invest billions of dollars to fund projects that take their interest, and the University benefits.

Here, all our professors do is copy and paste theories and research findings of their foreign counterparts in the name of writing a book.

Sometimes they assign projects to students and then compile the students' works into books, passing them off as theirs.

Our institutions lack initiative and dedicated hardwork from professionals whose only desire is to make a difference and to leave a landmark on the academic landscape. What we have are employees and staff whose only drive is to maintain a livelihood. Academic Income-earners. Dependents and floundering libidinous satyrs.

I remember sometime during my service year when a fellow copper asked me "No be the same degree wey u get wey all of us get?" Because I chose to communicate in sound English, and not the then more official pidgin, I simply told her that I know only about the degree i have, I don't know about the others.

While I would have loved to skip this thread like I would any thread out to tell the world about how useless Nigerian graduates are, despite the drop in educational standard being a direct consequence of the negligence and greediness of politicians like him, I would also want Mr. Atiku to know there are millions of Nigerians out here like myself, who against all the odds, managed to come out of the poor system with something in our heads.

Meanwhile last I checked, there is no "University of Zik" anywhere in Nigeria, such a poor knowledge of the country he wishes to govern by all means.
