There is no such thing as African brand.

Innoson and almost all the rest are Chinese Assembled rebadged automobiles.

Just post the pic of the car label by the door frame and let us see the vin number(manufacturer and serial number)

http://global.innosonmotors.com/innoson-vehicle-manufacturing-ivm/

If you want a car made in your name, go to alibaba.com
Look for any car or truck you like
Order the specified minimum or what you need
if you have a special request like changing the grill and light, you can.

Get your import waiver, regular allocation of dollars, line of credit
Then call yourself a manufacturer which could be true by Nigerian standard.
IF your inventory is backed up you can resell your regular dollar allocation to keep business afloat since it is a lot easier to make 40% profit overnight at the parallel market.

The fact is those models are not exclusive so all the badging is removable, there is no engraved manufacturer or model name on any of the trims.
So if you remove the badge on the steering, back and front of the car it will be blank and you can call it anything you like.

If you think Ghana make Katanka, well they are like Innoson too

I am just stating the facts

Your facts are well noted, man, and can't be faulted. However, almost every major auto-maker in the world today started off this way. Big Japanese manufacturers like Mazda, Honda etc started off in the 1930s effectively as assemblers of British, French and American parts and engines. Therefore African makers can start off this way too however there must be a conscious plan to bring something to the table at some point because you cannot remain in business for too long as an assembler.

Recall the 1st Spanish car manufacturer, SEAT? They spent the 1st 25yrs of their existence as a Volkswagen assembler in Toledo before they built the first real Spanish automobile. So IVM and co are not exactly in the wrong direction. We can only wish them well, if they have long term plans.

Looking at the fate of Innoson and other African car brands, what would you need before you paid similar money to that of a Chinese made vehicle for one made on the continent?

There is no such thing as an African car, except you re talking of donkeys and horses.

The so called innonsense cars you see are CKDs (Completely Knocked Down) components that are imported from China and assembled in Nigeria.

There is no local component in these cars, every thing is shipped from abroad.

Anytime your buy that Innonsense, know that you re enriching the economy of another country.

We already know that most of the parts are imported.
but trust me, a good number of the parts (especially the rubber components) are manufactured here.

Theres nio need to insult people on this forum just state your facts, name one company in Nigeria that makes rubber components for cars in Nigeria. becos even rubber foot-mats are imported.

The only rubber we have are plastic chairs and buckets, gp tanks

Boldness powered by ignorance and anger = stupidity.

Auto makers do collaborate by branding another car as theirs sometimes with minor sheetmetal changes.

Here are some examples you may have seen on the road and some you din't even notice.

Original- other clones

Before Honda started making their own SUV Pilot, they first sold rebadged Isuzu Rodeo as Honda Passport and Trooper as Acura SLX

Toyota Matrix- Pontiac Vibe

Ford Fusion -Mazda 6

Ford Focus - Mazda 3

Chrysler town& Country/Dodge Grand Caravan - Volkswagen Routan.

I understand the claim of 100% made in Nigeria car being made by Innoson to claim all that government benefit.

But for Innoson to use its new found status to push for Government ban on car importation is selfish, and the current forex scarcity is now leaving him exposed to the problems of other importers.

Playing the ethnic card to get exclusive govt perks is not the best for long term business plan.

The other 'assemblers' who were going to bring in ford and Toyota from South Africa have had to cancel their deals or cut back but the only one with the 100% claim is used for buyNigeria

IMVG5 is Gonow G5

http://chinaautoweb.com/2010/12/new-models-from-the-2010-guangzhou-auto-show-5-gac-gonow-aoosed-g5/

http://global.gacgonow.com.cn/ShowRoom/SUV/g5.html

One just has to look at 1000s of cars made in Chine to figure out which one is IMV**** or look beyond the physical IMV badge on the car.

The G5 image has been photoshopped to snow capped mountains I sometimes wonder where in Jos the pic was taken .

It is not cool for any writer to plagiarize but it is ok to label a car built by a chinese company as Nigerian made to make black people feel good.

How do you think it will feel to wake up to reality if this goes for too long

It needs to be reliable first next the quality of parts and engineering has to acceptable for mass production. Africa should have competitive luxury brands by 2050.
