A graduate of Chemical Engineering from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Nwanya Odichukwu, has been sentenced to 12 year imprisonment by a Federal High Court, Enugu over offences bordering on fraud and internet scam. According to a release signed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Spokesman Mr. Femi Babefemi, operatives from the Enugu zonal office of the Commission had on 20th August 2009 arrested Odichukwu at Logon Nigeria Multi Medis Cybercafé located at Chime Avenue, New Haven, during a raid. The statement said he was caught sending scam emails. Investigation shows that Nwanya was soliciting information on the financial status of unsuspecting victims. A thorough search on him and his residence led to the recovery of a parcel containing an international cashier valued at $2 million, a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) draft valued at $500,000 in the name of one Mr. B.R. Butler, a United Kingdom International Passport bearing the name of one Jaxkson Phillips Dennis as well as scanned United States dollar documents. The suspect was subsequently arraigned on a six count charge for committing offences contrary to Section 5 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related Offences Act No. 14 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act. Delivering his ruling on the matter last Friday, a copy of which was obtained on Monday November 9, Justice Abdu Kafarati sentenced Odichukwu to two years imprisonment on each count charge , bringing the total number of jail term to 12 years. The prison term will run concurrently.

Very very good. But how does 12 years compare to Bode George's 2.5 years? The law is really an arse

Bode George and his fans club were not convicted for any cash stealing, they got them for breaking the rule by way of splitting contracts that were over their authority to approve. The judge ruled that EFCC did not prove any cash stealing, lol.

It is a concurrent sentence, so he also has only two years to spend behind bars.

What does the above in BOLD means?

If this fellow is first time offender, then it is unfair for 12years.

OBJ stole $16bill nothing happened, Annenih stole N300billion, nothing happened.

We should correct our youth and channel their skills to benefit NIGERIA positively and not some yeye sentencing!

So going by your logic, since the killers of Marshall Harry and Bola Ige have gone scot free, we should free all the murderers in jail and give first time murderers aa very lenient sentence, eh?

There are tens of millions of Nigerian youths. Why then hesitate to punish the few bad eggs?

Very good but more still needs to be done, we have more of them out there.

Financial crime and murder are far and wide apart.

First time offenders are VERY different from repeat offenders

And when is your EFCC bringing OBJ to book for our $16bil?

Same EFCC that is happy to jail a kid for $12years who has not actually stole ANY MORE?

Good for him Idiot. Thats how some boys cloned our work email and almost used it to scam someone till we caught them. Small boys all from rich homes. the Mother of one of the boys broke down cos she is a Judge, so its not about poverty but sheer greed. I have no mercy for thses criminals

Good.
@aloy emeka,
u represent a typical nigerian and a good reason nigeria has refused to progress.
tell me in any country of the world where an individual fraudstar gets more jail terms than a public criminal.
do u know what it means been elected by a group of people to represent them or being appointed to an exalted position to be in charge of a people or an organization?
alams, bode george and an uncountable number of public servants in nigeria steal our funds in billions and turn us into servants and slaves in our own homes but the much they can get that is if at all they get involed will be six months or two years.
what are we rejoicing about a fraudstar geting 12 yrs jail term? every nigerian is either a criminal or a fraudstar refer me to an exception to the rule.
our professors deserve hanging and our elites are hell bound criminals. our judges are fakes and police is a nightmare.
the so called odichukwu is just an excape goat and will never be a solution to our criminalities.
a coutry with her head quarters(aso rock) as a safe heaven for high powered criminals can never produce genuine citizens as fellowers.

until this country go for the objects and leave shadow behind, we will never know progress.
no wonder after all ribadu's rants and pantings, corruption could do nothing but skyrocket to the highest level in our history.
if we are a real people, let there be a death sentence for public office abusers who are no different from internet scammers.
if efcc and the fg is out to fight frauds and scams 99% of nigerians will be inside before the odichukwu of a man.

exactly, has it occurred to you, it could also be due to peer pressure?

That is why a good society will look if the person is first time offender(mis-led, peer pressure etc) or repeat offender(sheer greed, beyond redeemption etc).

12yrs is unfair for the boy who has not even STOLEN any money!
Re: $2.5m Scam: Varsity Graduate Bags 12 Year Jail Term by Nobody: 7:05pm On Nov 10, 2009
^^^^^

i hope you realize that women have also been gang raped in the name of peer pressure

i hope you also know the joke about the criminal justice system - you only get prosecuted for the crime you are caught doing tongue

In the Legal system, 1st time caught is always a 1st time offender.
