The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has shown displeasure in the comments of Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Obateru Akinruntan, that Moremi Ajasoro was a traitor and should not be celebrated.

Oba Ogunwusi said this on Sunday in a statement issued on his behalf by the Director of Public Affairs. Ooni’s Palace, Mr. Moses Olafare, in reaction to the statement issued on behalf of the Olugbo by the Olugbo-in-Council.

The monarch said it was absurd for anyone to describe Moremi, who according to him, used her power to liberate her people from the incessant invasion of some faceless terrorist, as a traitor.

The statement read, “The attention of Ile-Oodua has been drawn to a statement credited to Oba Frederick Akinruntan through the Olugbo-in-Council berating the people of Ile-Ife for celebrating Moremi Ajasoro as a heroine and goddess of liberty.

“This outburst of Olugbo can only be viewed by the well meaning people as a mere royal rascality and a pitiable act of absurdity that doesn’t deserve serious attention by serious minded people.

“How on earth should a Yoruba king refer to Moremi as a traitor just because she used her power of a woman to liberate her people from incessant invasions by some faceless terrorists?

“While we remain very proud of the great queen Moremi Ajasoro, a brave woman who sacrificed her only son Oluorogbo for the victory of her people over the faceless terrorists who used to incessantly raid Ife markets, we will not dignify this rascality of royalty with an expected response as we are not ready for any useless supremacy battle incapable of taking Yoruba to a greater height.”

The Ooni urged Yoruba people and all lovers of peace to ignore the “reckless statement” capable of dividing the people further especially at the moment he (Oba Ogunwusi ) was working to unite the entire Yoruba race and the monarchs.

He said he was not in any supremacy battle with anyone and was not interested in engaging in such a worthless battle because he had been busy mending fences and working to bring all Yoruba people together since about a year ago he ascended the throne of his forefathers.

“It is a pity that at this time when everybody is lucidly tired of retrogressive royal discord generally agreed to have colossally hindered our pace of progress as a people of common heritage politically and socio-economically, the Olugbo who claims to be the chairman of Yoruba Obas Committee on Peace and Reconciliation has suddenly without a deep knowledge of Yoruba history woken up to see royal controversy as the only tool for cheap publicity.

“Kabiyesi Ooni is not interested in taking issues with Oba Akinruntan or anyone on any matter that can jeopardise his peace and unity project which is already making impact in so many sectors,” he added.

Obat seems to be just wealthy but lacks the place of reasoning and understanding on this Moremi issue!

Moremi had a strategy to liberate her people (Ife) from the incessant raids by the ugbo in masquerade-like costumes, this made them looked like super being . She went to River Esinmirin to pray and promised to sacrifice his son, Oluorogbo, to the river if she comes back.

During the next ugbo raid, Moremi surrendered herself to be captured and taken to ugboland. There she was married by the king for some years. She got to know the secret of these ugbo people and sneaked out one day back to Ife.

The following raid by the ugbo, Moremi had prepared her people (Ife) against the raid, the ugbo raiders were conquered and defeated. That ends the incessant raid by the ugbos on Ife land.

Ife is strategic place in the historical values of Yoruba people, how would someone in the place of King Obateru tell the Yoruba race not to celebrate the liberator (or liberatress if their is a place of feminizing) of the town, Ife?

Just like telling the Europeans not to celebrate Arthur Wellesley for conquering Napoleon Bonaparte at the battle of Waterloo, when France had almost got the whole of Europe to herself. Though France may not like him.

Or telling the Jews to call Queen Esther a villain from saving her people from Hamman

Oba Akinruntan and Onirisa should stop washing their dirty linen in public.

What 'A' considers as betrayer may be considered bravery or over looked by 'B', but that won't pull down the cast. That makes your argument mere academic exercise for theater artist sir.

Can't forget that film.

Awolowo versus Akintola, Tinubu versus Fayemi/Fashola, Ooni versus Olugbo of Ugbo. Yoruba's always fighting eachother over trivial things. Never has there been unity. So called learned people don't even keep track records of their own history. Oduduwa fell from the sky with chicken and calabash? I think oduduwa is the satanic fallen angel chased down from heaven.

Perception is all that matters. To Ooni, moremi was a great woman with wisdom who liberated her people while to Obateru, Moremi Ajasoro was a traitor.

However, every right thinking person will agree with the Ooni of ife. Moremi had to do what she needed to do to save her people. I love the story tho.

What is the problem of this Olugbo? Someone decides to honour who he deemed fit, and you are there vexing over it. You can also decide to honour or dishonour whoever you like.

The man should go and sit in one corner abeg. Ooni please honour her the more, let the vexation continue.
