FG Bans Importation of Vehicles Through the Land Borders

Importation of vehicles into Nigeria through the land Borders have been banned by the Federal Government. The prohibition order covers all new and used vehicles.

2. The Ban is sequel to a Presidential Directive restricting all vehicle imports to Nigeria Sea Ports only. The order takes effect from 1st January 2017.

3. The restriction on importation of vehicles follows that of Rice, whose imports have been banned through the land Borders since April 2016.

4. Importers of vehicles through the land borders are requested to utilize the grace period up till 31st December 2016 to clear their vehicle imports landed in neighbouring Ports.

Hope we won't wake up one day and discover that our source of income is banned. The notice is very short for dealers. At least 3months should suffice. What happened to vehicles that just left their shores to Cotonou?

@gazzuzz was never a fan of cars across the border....
Is it that the govt is yet to sanitize the land borders.
Or the shady customs and clearing agents that make govt loose out on igr
What is done differently at the sea ports, that is not replicable at the land ports
Many will be put out of legit businesses
will this ease the pressure on the foreign exchange market.
What are the pros and cons of this new directives.... ONLY TIME WILL TELL.

They killed the economy with the 70% import duty idea now they are finally going to bury the economy

Well done people, clueless people just wake up and make laws without considering the side-effect of making legal trade illegal thereby turning thousands of traders into criminals their cronies can exploit

I've never seen a situation where a government needs cash to run it's parastatals and will still block routes where money comes in every now and then. If with the decrease in importation, seme command was able to come up with N1.2B in the month of November alone, let's assume that the command is able to keep that target for 12 months, that's going to be almost N14.4B,imagine how many lives government will touch with that amount of money. How much tax does in oso pay even to it's state government?
