Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Alhassan Bako Zaku has said Nigeria will soon generate electricity using nuclear technology.

He stated this yesterday in Abuja at the laying of the foundation for the construction of low and Intermediate Radioactive Waste Management Facility and the building of Researchers’ Hostel located at the Nuclear Technology Centre in Sheda Science and Technology Complex, Abuja.

The minister said the event was demonstrted government’s commitment to build the requisite scientific and technological infrastructure for the realisation of the nation’s dream of fully deploying nuclear energy for national development

He said the structured programmes and activities will position the country not only to generate electricity from nuclear power plants, but also apply the technology in food and agriculture, human health as well as in mineral exploration and industry, saying, “Whatever we do here is being monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

He said plans are being made to commercialise the Gama Irradiation facility by using it for the preservation of food items through the mechanism of Private Public Partnership (PPP). The food to be conditioned using the Gama facility will be exported overseas to earn foreign exchange for the country, he said.

Director General of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Dr F. Erepamo Osaisai noted that the facility would help build indigenous capacity to implement nuclear programme in sustainable manner. Waste management is an important aspect of any nuclear installation.

The Researchers’ Hostel is to serve as accommodation and conference facility on-field and visiting researchers. It will be three winged one-storey building containing a capacity 250 persons, four large meeting rooms, a lounge, dining area, an IT centre as well as 36 standard self-contained chalets and 16 executive suites.

The low and intermediate radioactive waste management facility, which is designed to condition and treat solid and liquid radioactive wastes will be made of reinforced concrete, consists of off-loading bay, interim store, workshops and decontamination facilities among others.

A Nigeria that cannot build, manage and maintain a simple refinery wants to Build a Nuclear power plant. That is the joke of the century.

Idle talk from Mr Minister!

He should fix the drainage along the way to his house in the village.

After that we can listen to him.

sad na wa o ,they can't even maintain the cheapest source of energy in the world and they are going for one of the most expensive sources of energy. Another avenue for committees and subcommittees to chop money ! cry

@AloyEmeka, you would do us good if you could find articles from back as far as two years ago making the same announcement. This news is old news. I remember debating something similar back in 2007, and I believe we did again in 2008. Why is it being presented as new news yet again?

You don hearam now. Lagos - Benin road contract has been awarded for the 10th time in 2009. Wait for the next contract award for the same road in 2011, same goes for our nuclear electric project. sad grin

Dream, dream, dream, dreeeeeeeeeaaaaam,

Song of ABBA in the early 1980s.

Well, there is this saying that says one who does not have a dream does not have much. Let us allow them to dream on and may be they will deram the right one that will work. Trial and error is one of the seven point adenda. So, if they run away from turbine and move to Solar, sorry Nuclear, then one agenda is working.

For me, it is a mode to squander our countries money when we cannot even set-up Ajaokuta steel. If they said that Nuclear plant will be built abroad like NigSat 1, then it will work. Oyinbo wan waste our money and our government know get eye to see wayo for this one

I will for once keep an open mind on this, if we can make it happen, let us make it happen, we just need constant power, but there is a need for us to be very careful, cos nuclear disaster will not be funny at all.

I've been advocating Nuclear for ages. Nuclear is actually one of the cheapest means of producing large quantities of energy. EDF proved that in Europe.

We need Nuclear Energy now, but the thing is that there's a lot of politics involved in generating Nuclear energy in a third world country. Western countries don't want third world countries to generate nucler energy because they know that would tea to production and less imports from the USA and Europe. So they'll accuse us of building nuclear weapons.

The issue is whether we have enough connections with China, India and South Africa to handle this.

building is easier than maintaining it, also, wont be if there has to be a disaster in a place where militants wanna be heard and bombing places.
I am in support of it too, just hope we wont regret it

Nigeria and nuclear energy.
Why are we looking for other means 2kill ourselves.
When we've not maintained our roads, refinerìes, even PHCN.
Is it now the nuclear plant we're goin 2maintain.

There are places where nuclear accidents have taken place. They didn't revert to NEPA. They continued what they were doing. Let's put our weight behind this project.

Nuclear shalt it be.

I been dey count down since the announcement so. Just so I still get am right, we are expecting to be at 6000MW total and not that we are expecting addition of extra 6000MW, right?
