Judiciary don't make laws, only the national assembly does that which I guess a proposed bill on the separation is on d table in nass.....good development anyway
princemillla:
Isn't it better to separate state and LG account once and for all?
You strip gov to remove lg chairman but leav their allocation in their hand.

Anyway still good news sha... But separate their allocations acc, that way pure judgment would have been delivered

Wike should quickly reinstate the LGA Chairmen he dissolved.

I know the matter is still in court and with this ruling i see the chairmen returning back to office.

actually it was amaechi who first removed democratically elected LG chairmen (Timothy nsirim and others) and replaced with his men as caretakers.

I stand to be corrected

This judgement just dey do me yori yori.. tongue

An applause & champagne swigging moments... very very brilliant decision... This is 50% of the battle , the remaining 50% is seperating states & lgs accounts.... By the time this is done, some governors will not only resign of their own volition, some whose main focus is purely "chop chop" will not even bother...

This will also strengthen LG administration in two ways, it will attract better than area warlords/local touts & best of all, LGs & councillors are in the same community.

Make we dey look the excuses for bad portions of inner roads /streets then....
First Good News In Buhari Administration.

So long as LG and States have a joint financial account the one plays the piper will dictate its tune.
The National Assembly should as a matter of national important to first of all repeal the law joining LG Account with states. Without this being done LGA will always be under the mercy of the various states governors

This is the only solution to the epileptic local government performance in Nigeria.

Imagine, Oyo State has no functional LGAs In the last 10years. No election at all. Too bad.
Re: Supreme Court Strips Governors Of Power To Sack Local Government Officials by jospepper(m): 9:44am On Dec 10, 2016
Another deadly blow to the state governors, Ministry of LG and chieftaincy Affairs will be less interesting now and with the proposed amendments to make Local govts autonomous and state houses of assembly free from the whims and caprises of state Governors, there will be more sanity in the system.

Local Govt chairmen when state governor tries to tamper with their tenure henceforth.

These are the kind of judgements we want to hear. Next should be that FG giving the local government their allocations directly. This will help people to know who to ask questions when they are being owed salaries by the local government.

This is very commendable. I hope it will be extended to Imo State where the highly corrupt state gov Rochas Okorocha did the same thing and sacked a democratically elected LG Councils in his maiden broadcast as state Gov, and has since been stealing the LGA alocations for over five years now without having LGA elections.

This even happened even after Okorocha had condemned the former Gov Ohakim for doing the elections in his second year and not at assumption of office.

The LGA in Imo State is dead, the house of assembly reduced to mere errand boys of the extremely corrupt and fake Gov, while Imolites remain impoverished. Okorocha's case remain a typical example of the many reason why Nigerians see Buhari as very corrupt too, as he looks the other way while the gov in the like of Okorocha and other APC govs defrauds their various states.

The day democracy died at the LG level was the day state independent electoral commissions started conducting LG elections instead of INEC.
The state electoral commissions are constituted by the state govs to do the gov's bidding. I knew a friend who already saw the list of the winners of a yet to be conducted LG elections with his boss, the governor, many months before the election. At the election day,the gov merely transmitted same to the chairman of the state electoral commission who just announced it.
The first step towards LG autonomy once again is to scrap state electoral commissions and return its elections to inec as we used to know it. Then LG elections(chairmanship and councillors) would come first, the state(govs and state house of assembly) two weeks later and federal(presidency, senate and reps) another two weeks after.
The governors are the threat to our democracy

That is the fundamental issue that needs tackling. Most Governors serve out their 8 years using caretaker commitee and then conduct election one week before hand over to a new government.

First, how many judgements within your referenced time frame has the supreme court passed that you based your argument on?

Secondly, are you saying up till now the supreme court has never made a landmark judgement or most of the judgements they passed were biased?

Thirdly, if you say the judgements have been mostly corrupt and biased before now, upon what parameters do you base your conclusion? How did you conclude a judgement is biased or that the judges were compromised? Are you part of their inner caucus to have an idea who is compromised or who is not?

Only your answers to these questions will clarify your post.
