So far, just watch the political realignment from 2017 and most importantly the movement in 2018. Those are the key movements that will determine bbuhari's fate. You have said too, buhari will always have followers especially in the core north but, in 2015 it was the entire north. The core north couldn't win the Election for him 3times prior to 2015 remember! He will return back to his core north limitations.
By the way, the margin of victory is so small that 10% swing in his northern votes could end his presidency. As its stands, there is more than 10% in the north already with middlebelt having higher buhari's unfavourability.
Lastly, the election will be btw Buhari and his northern hausa/fulani brothers unlike the rather polarizing contest btw buhari and GEJ. It therefore, means the rigging via voters intimidation and outright threat to lives would have reduced significantly or rather a pound for pound scenario. That will shore up Opposition's votes in the north. Hunger and anger is Growing in the land and this Govt is lost on way out!

1 funy thing we dont know abt nairaland political news z this, people post political thread to get analysis n viwes, well 4 me, the hunger in the land is enough for me to think well.
