SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICE MESSAGE FOR ONLINE BRETHREN DATE: 21 04 2024 MESSAGE BY OUR FATHER IN THE LORD, PASTOR W F KUMUYI TOPIC: DELIVERANCE FROM THE POPULARIZED IDOLATRY OF BACKSLIDERS TEXT: EXODUS 32:7-11,31-33 • 7 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: • 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. • 9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: • 10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. • 11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? • 31 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. • 32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin―; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. • 33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. INTRODUCTION This is a familiar story to everyone. It is the story of the children of Israel. They just came out of the land of Egypt and were on their way to the land of Canaan. The Lord gave them special favours. You remember in Exodus ch 12 how the Lord said, when I see the blood, I will pass over you. God decided to deliver them after hearing their cries, and He brought them out in their millions and the Bible tells us that there was no feeble ones among them. The Lord was favourable to them. In ch 20, He gave them laws and commandments to follow, part of which was to never have any other god apart from Him, and they were to love the Lord their God with all their hearts and souls, and not make or bow down to any graven image, they were not to swear by the name of God, and were to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy and worship God only in it. In ch 24, the word of God was laid bare to them and they promised that they would keep all the words given to them and do them. Now in ch 32, very close to ch 24 where they made a promise, they decided to go back on their promise and commitment by telling Aaron to make them a god. They should have known that whatever you make, manufacture or produce is lower than you because it is the work of your hands. Eventually, God called them "your people", not "my people" as He called them when He sent Moses to Pharaoh. This is why we are looking at the message today titled DELIVERANCE FROM THE POPULARIZED IDOLATRY OF BACKSLIDERS and it is divided into 3 points: A. THE DESCRIPTION AND DENUNCIATION OF PERVERSE IDOLATRY OF BACKSLIDERS Someone must first have backslidden before turning his back to God and worshipping something he made with his own hands. 1. The Ingratitude of Backsliding And Their Punishable Idolatry (Exodus 32:7-9; Jeremiah 2:5,31; Romans 1:21-32; 1 Corinthians 10:5-11) These are people who God has been good to, He healed them, He spared their first-borns in Egypt when He said "when I see the blood, I will pass over you". They conquered the Amalekites and other enemies. God opened the Red Sea, something that was impossible and has never been done by anyone in any generation. They became so ungrateful to God. Don't say they corrupted you, the Israelites corrupted themselves. God wanted to cleanse, sanctify and remove the evil thing from their hearts, but they were not willing. They said Aaron should make a god for them because they didn't know what had become of Moses who had just been away for 40 days. These were people who were in the bondage of Egypt for over 400 years! The Lord may be asking you the same question if you have abandoned Him as the God of your salvation and made light of the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross of Calvary, and you are no more devoted and given to Him. He saved, blessed, healed, delivered, and promoted you, He gave you a husband/wife, children and hope of heaven. He answered your prayers, if you now turn away from Him, what justification do you think you have for being so vain? Romans 1:21-32. On that night of salvation and deliverance, they knew God. At the Red Sea and the time Manna came from heaven and they all ate, they knew God. When the rock was smitten and water came out of it, they knew God, as well as when they came out of Egypt with great riches. Upon all these goodness, they glorified Him not as God, but paid attention to idols which have never done anything for them. They became foolish and their hearts were darkened. Idolatry is punishable after a person has been saved, fed sound doctrines and shown the way of life to heaven and taught that there is hell if one misses heaven. If the individual goes back to any form of idolatry: idolizing men, women, money, politics, or anything else in this world, he deserves to be punished. 1 Corinthians 10:5-11. God was not well pleased with Aaron, all leaders of the people and the generalty of the people apart from Moses and Joshua who were with him on the mount. God unleashed His anger upon them because they have gone away from Him, thus, they were overthrown in the wilderness. 2. The Insensibility of Backsliders in their Pernicious Idolatry (Proverbs 14:14; Jeremiah 2:19; Zechariah 7:11-13; Hebrews 3:12-19) Proverbs 14:14. "The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself". The backsliden people of Israel have been thinking in their hearts about the whereabouts of Moses before asking for a god. The word of God and His goodness were not abiding in their hearts. They were filled of their own ways, words and foolishness. Jeremiah 2:19. When you are backslidden and God rejects you and the pressure of the world increases on your life, then you will know that it was a foolish thing to have departed from God. Under the power of your enemies who are chasing you, life becomes bitter because you have forsaken God. Hebrews 3:12. The children of Israel abandoned the living God and started paying homage, worship and sacrifice to dead gods, how foolish can they be! Someone cuts a piece of wood, makes an image out of it and uses the rest to cook his food and turns back and bows down to the image. How foolish can religious, idolatrous people be! This is why the word of God is warning us against having hearts of unbelief and departing from God. vs 13. Don't help, encourage or contribute to anyone's sinfulness. Don't so respect people who have gone into idolatry that you won't be able to correct them when they err. vs 19. God has promised to take the children of Israel to the Promise Land but they could not enter in because of unbelief even though God had the power to take them there. 3. The Insufficiency of Believing with Passive Idolatry (Hosea 7:16a; Jeremiah 3:10; Ezekiel 14:3-6; Revelation 2:4-5) This is the kind of idolatry that people practice and it is not visible to the eye but it is there in their hearts, emotion, life and brain. In their sacrifices they are bending, and bowing down in idolatry. It is not enough to say you believe in the Lord, you must not have any inclination to idolatry in your heart. Let our claims that we fear and believe God be seen in us. It is not enough to claim, but more important to show it. The children of Israel returned, but not to the Most High God. They pretended to belong to the Lord, but their hearts were far away from Him, they didn't turn to Him with the whole heart. If you say you know God, your life, desires, aspirations, ambition must be for Him alone. Jeremiah 3:10. Some people say they are not idol worshippers, but it is within them. It is not visible but inside them. God can see into their hearts and inner devotions. They set up their idols in their hearts, and pretend to seek the Lord, and make petitions unto Him, whereas, everything in their hearts are against God. Revelations 2:4. Christ has something against you because you are no longer as committed as you used to be. Your heart has gone after other gods, personalities, religions. You now fear man more than you fear God. You love something more than you love God to the extent that if you were told to remove or abandon such thing, you will not come to church the following day. You will be so offended because you love it so much. It might be your flesh, money, politics, that you love more than God. The Lord counsels you to remember where you have fallen and make your ways right with Him. Repent and do the first works. This warning was to the Angel (Pastor) of the church in Ephesus, Pastors must repent when they need to, when their hearts and love have gone to another personality. Christian workers ought repent when they see that their hearts and love are no more with God but with the worldly Olympic games and football, and anytime there is a tournament/game, your minds and brains are gone, your vigilance, steadfastness and watchfulness are gone. Anytime they are doing any festival in the village and you want to see how the masquerades look like, and your mind is no more where it ought to be 100%, you need to repent and make amends. For some students, when exam is approaching, all they have learned about honesty, truthfulness and integrity are gone, all they want is to pass their exam. They would do whatever they can to succeed. They forget the words of our Lord which says that believers are the light of the world and they are to let their light shine brightly for others to see. Anytime someone they love doesn't come to church, their minds are divided, that individual has become their god. That is why Jesus said the church at Ephesus must repent and come to Him quickly, otherwise, He would remove their candlestick from its place. Sunday Worship Service |

B. THE DECREE OF DELETING POLLUTED IDOLATERS FROM HIS BOOK. Exodus 32:31-33 It was just expected that God would blot the names of the children of Israel out of His books. Idolatry is a great sin, taking your life's commitment away from God to give another whether passively or actively is a sin. Your heart has gone into idolatry and whatever you love that no preaching, doctrine, exhortation or correction must touch is an idol. Idolatry in any form is a great sin. Moses interceded for the Israelites who had not repented. Moses, it is good to love the people, but you must love God more. You must exalt Him and hate/reject their idolatry. Moses said God should blot his name from the Book of Life for people who were yet to repent, people who don't honour God. The implication of being blotted out of God's book is grievous. Whosoever was not written in the Book of Life will eventually be cast into the lake of fire. God did not approve of the prayer of wanting to forfeit heaven for people who didn't realize their errors, rather, He told Moses that whoever sinned He would blot out of His Book. If they want to get back to God's Book, they must repent, come back to God, and not continue in their hellish ways. 1. Transformed Believers, Born-again, Written in the Book of Life (Exodus 32:31-32; Luke 10:19-20; Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:4-5) Luke 10:20. Rejoice not that you brought water out of the rock, that you stretched the rod, and the sea parted into two, that you raised the rod and Joshua defeated the Amalekites, that all the work of wonders were performed in Egypt. The greatest blessing, privilege and source of joy we have is that our names are written in the Book of Life when we became born again. Whatever opportunities we have in the world - to serve the Lord, heal the sick, cast out devils, provide for our families, having good spouses, preaching and other people are getting converted, none of them is to be compared to having our names written in the Book of Life. The question is, is your name in the Book of Life? Running up and down, being devoted to this and that, anything you need to give away to have your name in the Book must be done away with. If you don't have your name there, you will be of all men the most miserable, but only he that overcomes will be saved. Moses asked Aaron what happened and he said the people were about to stone him. But Stephen was stoned and he looked up to heaven and saw Jesus. What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? The Lord would have destroyed Aaron but Moses prayed for him. Some people fall from the faith because of the fear of man, they didn't think of what will happen to their names in the Book of God. Should you be afraid to the extent of surrendering, not minding if your name is removed from God's Book? That is a dangerous and unreasonable surrender. It is better to suffer persecution and endure to the end because Jesus promises great things for all who overcomes. He said He will confess his name before His Father and the Angels. 2. Transgressing Backsliders Blotted Out of the Book of Life (Exodus 32:33; Hebrews 10:38-39; Hosea 8:8,12; Hebrews 10:26-31) Exodus 32:33 "And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book". Some people fear men, but think God is so cheap that they don't care about Him or what He wants. We must never be so fearful of men to the extent of disobeying or disrespecting God. His declaration at that time still stands today. Hebrews 10:38. When you compromise and turn away from the Lord, you are not living by faith. When you say Yes to man, and No to God, when you are afraid, not knowing from where they will come out at you, when you are changing the doctrine or message of the word of God, you are not living by faith. Whosoever draws back, God will not delight in him. Hosea 8:8. Israel drew back from God and attributed their deliverance from slavery to idols. They counted the doctrines of God as nothing. They will not please God just as a woman whose mind is divided from her husband does not give him joy. There is no more sacrifice to be done when anyone wilfully goes into sin after salvation. There will be very sore punishment for such a-one because he trampled upon the Lord and makes His sacrifice of no value. Sanctified people can backslide when their minds are distracted from their Lord and Saviour. Reason why we need to be very careful and watchful. 3. Treacherous Blots with the Banished in the Books of the Lost (Jude 1:12-13; Revelation 20:12-15; 21:8,27; 22:14-15,18-19) Revelation 20:15. "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire". Whosoever, whoever in any congregation and in any generation. Pastors who commit immorality with, and impregnate church women, Pastors who touch and steal church money, and those who go to contact diabolical powers to perform miracles will be cast into the lake of fire if they fail to repent. ch 21:27. "And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life". Idolatry is an abomination. Was it not the biggest lie of the century when the Israelites said about the image: "these be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt"? It was the greatest, dangerous, hellish and biggest lie anyone can tell. Since their names were taken out of the Book of Life, if they didn't repent, they will not get to heaven but end up in the lake of fire which burns forever and ever. ch 22:15. "For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie". There are times those who claim to be born again but are used to practice magic, juju, witchcraft, etc still want to experiment and test the power and contacts they used to have with evil powers. And they do what they used to do and the effect can still be felt in another place. Then they say the power is still intact, but they will not use it. Such people have gone back into magic, conjuring powers and working with evil spirits, and using evil powers even though they may be claiming to still be born again and be workers in the Church. They will not get to heaven as the Scriptures said. C. DILIGENCE AFTER DELIVERANCE FROM PRESENT-DAY IDOLATRY WITHOUT FURTHER BONDAGE. 1 Corinthians 10:14; Amos 5:25-26 After coming back to the Lord, we are to turn away from all idols totally and be diligent in following the Lord with all our hearts. When you realize that another love and devotion is coming to you, and idolatry private and public, commitment and consecration to other powers, other persons, you must flee all forms of idolatry. 1. Forsake and Flee from Idolatry and Bondage (1 John 5:18,21; John 10:4-5; 2 Peter 2:19-22; 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10) 1 John 5:18,21 • 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. • 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 • 9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; • 10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. Here Apostle Paul talked about the Thessalonians believers, what they did and how they quit every form of idolatry, and came to the Lord, living in total consecration and commitment to Him. It was evident to the people around them that they quit idolatry completely. Their neighbours could tell because it was so clear. They also waited earnestly for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ who delivered us from the wrath to come. 2. Feed and Fellowship without Iniquity and Backsliding (Acts 2:40-47; Psalm 94:20; 1 Corinthians 10:14,20-21; 1 John 1:3-7) You must not have appetite like Esau who will not care about where the food is coming from, but will eat voraciously, and say he was about to die, and give away his birthrights carelessly. Food is good, but we must be careful that we don't eat anything that has a trace of idolatry. Remember that the body will die and perish. The body is important but its need must not destroy your spirit and soul which are more important. The new converts in Acts continued steadfastly in the doctrines of the word of God and continued in fellowship and breaking of bread with the people of God. We must be free from every form of idolatry. We must walk in the light of Christ and His example and model, depending on Him only, not like Aaron, standing today, but tomorrow fallen and compromised. Our Lord does not want any sin in us, it is evil and damning and He has made every provision for us to be free from sin. 3. Fear the Lord and Follow His Instructions for the Bride (Deuteronomy 6:24-25; Luke 12:4-5,32; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Revelation 19:5-9) We must dutifully follow the commandments of God. We must fear Him. Aaron was afraid to die, at over 80, he compromised. Some elderly people today find it difficult to stand for Christ, they say they don't want to offend their children. At over 80, close to 90! If you fear men, your feet and devotion will not be towards God who deserves all our devotion and faithfulness. If you are into idolatry, if your body is responding to pornography, if you are more concerned and taken by the ideologies of the world, you are no longer a chaste virgin to the Lord who loved and gave Himself for you. Only people who the Lord reigns over their lives, ambitions, desires and everything they do are His Brides. Our minds and hearts must not be given to any other God, and we must dedicate ourselves to God and Him alone. May He purify and purge you so that when He comes - we don't know the day - you will be counted worthy. Rise and talk to the Lord in prayer. It is not about what you hear, but more about how much prayer you make after hearing the word of life. PRAYER for the GS: May God bless and keep our father in the Lord for us.
