Eighteen nations, including Canada, have been named the most peaceful nations in the world by the Global Symposium of Peaceful Nations in Washington

Canada was most largely recognized for its support of United Nations peacekeeping missions, low crime rate levels and political stability. This award puts Canada eighth on the Symposium’s global peace index.

Singapore was also awarded as a peaceful nation for its efforts to achieve peace at home and abroad.

Other nation recipients include Australia, Argentina, Portugal, Japan and the United Kingdom.
Nations to be considered very low on their Global Peace Index in 2009 are Russia, most African nations, India, Columbia and Venezuela.
