AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY: AN OPEN LETTER TO EDO STATE GOVERNOR MR GODWIN OBASEKI.

Dear Sir,

I am writing you this letter not only as an alumnus of that prestigious alma mater but as a concern Edo indigene , your fellow party man, a lover of Education and some one who wants the mistakes and shortcomings of the past administration to be corrected by your Government, and I am writing you with all sense of humility and hoping this letter will meet you in good faith. This letter is also sequel to the stakeholders 3 days strategic meeting held in Benin last week to set agenda for the new administration.

Mr Governor sir, Let me quickly remind you that Ambrose Alli University is the first premier government owned university in Edo State and one of the greatest university in Nigeria today that has produced great Nigerians and also the pride of Edo people which was named after a Governor who many still remember for his strong commitment to the educational sector.

Mr Governor sir, as a man who has read very well both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria I do not need to tell you the importance of quality education to the socio-politucal and economic development of any country. That is why somebody said years ago " He that opens a school closes the road to the prison" . Unfortunately, what we have today in AAU is a magnificent ancient and moribund university that does not fit into the NUC standard talkless of the current global standard of Education and this is as a result of the total neglect of that school by past State Government.

Mr Governor sir, one would have expected that Ambrose Alli University being the first and major State owned university that is one of the greatest asset and pride of Edo State and has suffered so much underdevelopment , marginalization and the students haven suffered so much injustice would have been your first point of call, but sadly you have not visited. You deemed it fit to visit the newly established Edo State University, Iyamho, you have visited Tayo Akpata institute of Education and promise to give the school a new lift, you have also visited the private owned Igbinedion to attend their convocation ceremony, you have also visited Edo State school of nursing etc, but unfortunately you have not visited AAU that has produced great men in Nigeria and Edo State . That school Sir needs attention as we are tired of every day protest by students. Sir, if this Government develops all other schools in Edo State and didn't develop AAU or reform the school in all sector , the government has actually done nothing as it regards education in Edo State.

Mr Governor sir, it will interest you to know that the hostels in that schools are worse than the houses in my village and the class rooms where student receive lectures are worse than the town hall meeting in my village. The lecture halls are like matches box that can't even contain students during lecture period and majority are made to stand outside during lecture hours. Apart from some intervention from TETFUND ,CBN and other private bodies and individuals the State Government has actually not helped that school and it seems the past administration deliberately abandoned that school for reasons best known to them.

Consequently, despite all the nearly every year increment of the tuition fees that has caused protest and closure of that school, there is still no good hostels or structure to show for it. The best and only standard hostel today in that school was built by the former Governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion and the only functional and large lecture hall(NLT) today was also built by him and some years back God also used Pastor Oyakhilomen to build another lecture hall. Chief Lucky Igbinedion was provoked when he visited and promise he will built the hostels and lecture hall within 100 days, the promise he actually fulfilled. We know that your predecessor focused more primary and secondary schools that's why his effect was not felt in that school and even the administrative block Lucky Igbinedion started which he promised to complete is still not completed. The school has no good library, ICT center. The part time and pre degree session located in Emaudo is like the houses the Colonial masters lived in 1900. The college of Medicine, engineering and other science courses need modern equipments as we are tired of frequent disccreditation by NUC and other regulatory bodies. This is totally unacceptable in this contemporary age. We are very optimistic that your visitation to that school to see thingschool.yourself will change the pathetic story of that school and change the status quo. And we will all rejoice and hail thee.

Mr Governor sir, One area you also need to look at in that school is the level of corruption, victimization of students, sexual abuse by lecturer s and other forms of unholy practices in that school. When you see students protesting, sometimes it is not the increment of tuition fee or whatsoever it is the expression of anger, pains and frustration by the helpless students. That is a school where lecturers will come to class and tell you if you think you can pass with just reading you are wasting your time. The lecturers see themselves as untouchable and indomitable. The students are helpless and cannot even report to anybody as that will worsen their woes. You see students that do not even attend classes or reads their books but only appear during exams and they usually have the best results. AAU needs exactly what happened recently in Auchi Polytechnic where many lecturers who embarked on those unholy acts were given various sanction and today there is sanity in the school and that has served as deterrent to others who do same. The students and alumni of AAU will not only celebrate such action just like the way Auchi Polytechnic students did but will forever see you as their hero.

For the avoidance of doubt sir, that school has produced great and notable Nigerians who are doing very well in their various area of endeavours. Are you aware sir, Dr. Chris Oyakhilome attended that school? Are you aware Tony Elumelu the chairman of UBA and transcorp attended that school? Sir are you aware Samuel Oboh who is a Canadian architecture and the first African to be elected President of the Alberta chapter of the royal Architecture institute in 2007, the legal icon Chief Festus Keyamo etc, attended that school Furthermore, it will interest you to know that many of the celebrities in Nigeria today attended that school. Don Jazzy,Alibaba, Omawunmi etc. Products of that school are doing very well in their chosen endeavours either as managers of men, materials, captains of Indus try, seasoned technocrats and worthy ambassadors.. Students of that school have won various local and international laurel. The law students have set unassailable records in the Nigeria law school, the medical students came best in the last medical students competition and many people in your government today or who will be in your government are product of that school, hence the need for it to be developed and totally overhauled.

Ambrose Alli University is not an Esan university but Edo State University that has helped to build many of us both from Benin, Afemai and Esan and thus we should not allow politics to deprive that school from the attention and priority it needs as the greatest State owned higher educational institution we have in Edo State today. I am glad you have promised that your Government will not embark on frivolities and that has given hope to many of us that you are going to do things differently because marginalising that school because it is in Esan land which didn't give you enough support is frivolity at it peak. Am happy you are not the vindictive type but an intelligent, focused and well exposed individual.

God bless you sir and I wish you more wisdom, strength and enablement to pioneer the affairs of our dear Edo State and take it to a greater height.

Yours Faithfully,

The university is in its current state, because Oshiomhole deployed the funds that would have been used, to build a university next to his house in Iyamho.

it is only foolishness that made Oshiomhole to believe that under developing the school was a way of punishing the people of ESAN land. Instead of providing basic infrastructure for the university he went ahead to establish another university in his home town iyamho.
