A new national labour movement called United Labour Congress of Nigeria has been formed by 25 industrial unions from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria on Saturday.

The ULC elected 13 executives to drive its mandate in which the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Joseph Ajaero, emerged as its National President.

In addition, Igwe Achese of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, became its Deputy President; K. Kadiri became its National Vice President while Onyeka Chris emerged as its acting General Secretary.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its inaugural delegates’ conference, the congress said there was an urgent need for a rebirth of the organised labour in order to recreate a movement capable of fulfilling its potential to Nigerian workers, masses and Nigeria.

Members of the union pledged to restore hope to Nigerian workers who were being victimised, and neglected, adding that it would defend the rights of oppressed Nigerians in a bid to make governance more effective and responsive.

They observed that the existing labour unions had been compromised by forces that did not have its interest, that of Nigerians at heart, saying that there was need for a refining and strengthening of trade unionism.

I have never seen a Labour Union that is as useless as this current one

Where are all the welfare packages always negotiated by NLC with the govt whenever price of fuel is inreased?

Labour movement has been buried finally in this cUntry. It started when they teamed up with the crowd in Ojota and politicians infiltrated their rank.

dabossman:

You must be quite young if you think that was when the NLC started derailing. Either that, or you're just being mischievous. The NLC lost its way after the military left and they started courting politicians. It started with Oshiomole always playing to the gallery, declaring strikes whenever government increased fuel prices while ignoring more important issues bothering on workers welfare, workers casualization and so on. Oshio baba was more interested in gaining cheap popularity that eventually led to him running for Governor.

NLC died after Pascal Bafyau. I decided to scratch the problem on the surface because I don dey tire to discuss Nigeria wahala. Oshiomhole buried NLC with his double standard and Ajaero, who is his pupil, is here to do worse

Long overdue!

NLC has become a political affiliate of any ruling party. A toothless bull-dog it has become and has totally deviated from its aim and objectives.

This is an opportunity for labour to emerge stronger. The only issue is if the Federal government will recognise them.

Nonetheless, given the fact that our crappy NLC has lost all the respect of Nigerians, especially as they got their balls cut off by the APC government, I wish this new Union Congress the very best and hope they succeed.
