Lagos Presents Three Bedroom Flat Keys To Widow Of Late Naval Officer
Recognises 16 gallant Police Officers

Nov 16, 2009 - The Lagos State Government on Monday restated its commitment to recognize gallant and patriotic law enforcement agents by presenting the keys of a three bedroom flat to Mrs Olubunmi Oluseyi Awe, widow of a military officer who was slain during an attack on the Atlas Cove Jetty and Certificates of Commendation to 16 Police Officers and men who have distinguished themselves on duties.

Speaking at Lagos House, Ikeja while handing over the keys of the flat located at Igbogbo II in Ikorodu, Deputy Governor Sarah Adebisi Sosan who stood in for Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) said the State Government would always stand by officers in times of need.

According to her, the death of late Commander A.K Joshua Awe during the attack by unknown men on the Atlas Cove Jetty some months ago showed the commitment and gallantry of the officer in the course of duty.

He added that the widow, Mrs Olubunmi Awe who was accompanied by her three children, one of whom (Adun) was marking her seventh year birthday, should take solace in the fact that her husband died in the course of national duty and would forever be remembered in the annals of the history of the nation.

While asking her to be of good courage, Governor Fashola said Mrs Awe should be steadfast and ensure that the future remains bright by training the children left behind by the deceased and giving them sound education.

He added that like all mortals, the late officer has transited to the great beyond, promising that the State Government would not abandon her and the children in the years ahead, adding that the provision of the accommodation is one of the little ways by which the State wanted to appreciate his gesture.

To the gallant Police Officers who have distinguished themselves, Governor Fashola commended their gallantry, assuring that Lagos will continue to recognize hard work amongst them.

He said it is very appreciable that despite the many challenges of a very large population that is daily increasing, the State Government is succeeding in effectively combating crime and making Lagos safer for everyone.

Governor Fashola said this is being attested to by recognitions which the State Police Command and the State Governor got in Accra Ghana recently as the most Pro active Police formation in the West African sub region and Star Award for laying the foundation for peace in Lagos respectively.

Speaking earlier, the State Police Commissioner, Mr Marvel Akpoyibo said the occasion is another demonstration of the commitment of the Lagos State Government to make the job of policing the State easier and reassuring for the law enforcement agencies.

He reiterated that it was part of the mandate of the present Police leadership in Lagos to be pro active and wait until criminals strike, saying the recognised Police officers have distinguished themselves in that regard.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Mr Jide Sanwo Olu told the audience that the programme is another demonstration of the genuine demonstration of care by Governor Fashola for all those who are saddled with the task of ensuring a safer Lagos.

He said the recognized gallant Policemen served as undercover security men who have assisted in nipping several criminal intents in the bud.

The Deputy Governor presented Certificates of Commendation to the 16 Police Officers and men as well as Mrs Olubunmi Awe who got the keys and documents of the three bedroom flat while those present sang a birthday song for little Miss Adun Awe who was marking her seventh birthday.

The recognized Police officers who have contributed to the prevention of crime in Lagos include Chief Superintendent of Police, Richard Ejeh (O/C SCIB), Inspector Christian Ibeh, Inspector Ojewole Olubunmi, Sergeant Bright Igbinoba, Sergeant Nwakama Friday, Sergeant Uloko Obiabo, Sergeant Victor Omoregie, Sergeant Ahmed Salisu, Sergeant Regina Onyemiazu.

Others are Sergeant Patience Biokoro, Sergeant Victor Okeewu, Corporal Osagide Efosa, Cpl Sofoni Gbisama, Police Constable Onome Umukoro, Constable Noah John and Constable Joseph Semon.

Present at the brief but very touching ceremony were the father of the late naval officer, his sister, members of the State Executive Council and Adviser to the Governor on Security, Major Tunde Panox.
