 Port Harcourt in the south-south Nigeria can simply be described as Nigeria’s second economic haven. The state is popular for having huge oil deposits which is the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy. The oil-rich city was named Port Harcourt in honour of Lewis Vernon Harcourt by Sir Frederick Lugard in August 1913. As a Port Harcourt resident, Tourists coming to this part of the world should look forward to the following. Sight of endless dustbin thrown by residents at either one side of the road or in the middle median which normally should be dividing the road. This median has been turned into a walkway by some and a market place of sorts by many. Most junctions in Port Harcourt doubles up as an unplanned market and a bus stop and together with the refuse dump causes holdup. The tourist will be amazed at how Human beings pass by with the heat and stench. The tourist will notice numerous Police check points where money changes hands without much being said. The tourist will notice a lot of church signboards and buildings and should take time out to attend one of the church services to get to know the Nigerian mentality, he may run into a governor by the way. There are some Sand dredging sites scattered around Port Harcourt especially around the Choba bridge area, try and visit too. Every tourist should take a fast visit to Okrika and observe the level of environmental pollution being caused by the Port Harcourt refinery that is working at about 2% capacity.
