It was a show of shame , yesterday, at the Lagos state House of Assembly in Ikeja, shortly after the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, presented the state's 2010 budget proposals, tagged “Budget of Consolidation”, to the lawmakers .
Trouble started when the impeached Deputy Speaker, Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, took on a female colleague, Risikat Adegeye, in a hot exchange of words , when the members were taking group photographs with the state Deputy Governor, Mrs Sarah Adebisi Sosan.
Tejuosho had taken offence at the decision of Adegeye to take her leave from the photo session when Tejuosho wanted to join the group for the photo-shoot.
Afterwards, some members, including the lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I, Mudasiru Obasa, and the Chief Whip, Rasak Balogun, tried to mediate between the duo who had been at loggerheads after the removal of Tejuoso as the deputy speaker.
As this was going on, Tejuosho threw caution to the winds and insulted Adegeye by referring to her as “omo alata” meaning pepper hawker, suggesting Adegeye is not fit to be a member of the Assembly.
She even threatened to beat up Adegeye, screaming “ma na e, ma fi ye wipe Mushin ni mo ti wa”, meaning “I will beat you and prove to you that I am from Mushin area of the state”.
In retaliation, Adegeye fired back , using denigrating and derisive words to describe Tejuosho .The two female lawmakers were at the point of exchanging blows when their male colleagues who were present to witness the altercation intervened.
In an effort to prevent the scenario from being reported, the Chief Whip ordered security agents to chase reporters out of the chamber, claiming the business of the day had been concluded.
It would be recalled that Tejuosho was removed from office as the Deputy Speaker on Monday, August 17, 2009 through a letter signed by majority of the members due to what was alleged to be high-handedness, violation of the Assembly rules amongst other allegations. After her removal, it took Tejuosho some weeks to return to the Assembly and when she eventually
returned late October, she took a seat beside Adegeye, who immediately relocated to avoid getting close to Tejuosho .
