Govt builds storage centres for electoral materials

THE Federal Government has moved to ensure that electoral materials are not tampered with after elections by constructing two ICT Strategic Data Storage Centres where all electoral documents would be stored for maximum security.

One of the centres is located at Dutse in Jigawa State to serve the northern part of the country while the other one is located in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters yesterday paid an inspection visit to Abeokuta where the Deputy Committee Chairman, Abubakar Abubakar, disclosed that the N100 million project would be completed in a few weeks' time.

Kayode Amusan, a member of the committee, who spoke with journalists after the inspection, stated that the two projects are part of government's efforts to ensure free and fair elections.

"Petitioners have been complaining that electoral materials were being tampered with. So these (projects) are parts of the measures by the government to ensure free and fair elections in the state", he said.

Amusan said that when completed, the ICT Strategic Data Storage projects would serve as storage centres for all electoral records "that nobody can tamper with them".

Abubakar corroborated Amusan's statement by explaining that all sensitive electoral materials be kept there for security reasons.

He expressed displeasure about the quality of work on the N100 million project and urged the contractor, Bonny Rose Investment, to effect a change.

The 14-member committee had earlier paid a courtesy call on Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel.

Why can't they build them in every state?. How will they cross Ayo Fayose's house with these ballot boxes safely without someone from his compound using a hand grenade to stop the bullion van?

One should have been in ND. They have shown better competence in resisting stupid FG

moves in recent times and I feel they are better placed to safeguard things like these. In

any case tey must have federal presence.

If the goverment wants to prove that they are sincere about the elections, they should revert to Option A4 - which was used during the June 12 elections.  We can all wait for our votes to be counted and announced at the end of voting at each polling station.

With the technology of mobile phones and Camcorders , it will be difficult for us to get robbed of our votes, but hey!

With Option A4 no one knows who you voted for,  you go into the booth and cast your vote.  Well,  unless you start jubilating when your candidiate wins, during the counting exercise.  That is the only way that anyone will know who you voted for or against.  
Somehow we need a solution to all these election malpractices.  Your vote is your right and you should not be intimidated by any landlord or boss.  I guess that is another issue entirely.

They have to say something to us docile Nigerians. At least with these useless projects they hope to score a point in the eyes of other countries

why building such a massive secured houses for common ballot boxes when the rigging is done right there in the pulling centre or the ballot boxes will be taking to the taking straight to the anointed candidate's house for tumb printing,
