CALABAR —The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), NIM, has thrown its weight behind the five percent reward promised by the Federal Government to anyone who exposes fraud and other related crimes in both the public and private sectors.

It will be recalled that the decision was reached a week ago at the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, which was announced to Nigerians by the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.
Speaking with Vanguard shortly after its Annual General Meeting and end of the Year dinner in Calabar, Cross River State, Chairman NIM, Calabar chapter, Mr. Evong Evong, described the decision as a welcome development as it would go a long way in helping the fight against corruption.

He said: “Anything that will help reduce, mitigate and eventually eradicate corruption at all levels is a welcome development as long as it is within the ambit of the law and doesn’t infringe upon the rights of the people.

“Our tenets include professionalism and integrity, transparency and we believe in prudent management of funds, so if the Federal Government has made a policy to encourage more whistle-blowers, it would make many people sit up and many ohers will also come forward since they know they have a lot to benefit from it.”

Someone should please tell the FG that all of us can be the Howard Webb, Mark Clattenburg, Mark Atkinson, Mark Dean etc. that they want, how about they set up a strong Witness Protection act so that individual Ref/whistleblower won't be assassinated in a glaring moment of "mis-blow-ment". Corruption fights back harder than karma in this country o.

The whistle blower reward of 5% is too low,the stake should be raised to at least 10%,of course except the target is those who stole in billions and not a wholistic approach to include those who pilfer or corruptly corner funds in lower amounts. For instance, where someone has proof of his/her boss corruptly obtaining public fund to the tune of N5 Million and the reward is N250 thousand it discourages - because when corruption starts fighting back N250k won't do a thing.
By raising the stake to 10 or 15% a whistleblower can hide under a representative (lawyer),when FG pays reward both can share based on a percentage,in fact many of our jobless or underemployed lawyers will be greatly employed under such scheme.

Witness protection should be the number one priority before this. giving 5 percent won't guarantee people's participation. Even 100% cannot be compared to security of life.

With my life and Job at stake after "blowing whistle" , I don't think 5% is enough for me to take such risk. We all know how Naija system works, blow whistle and you are on the target list for sack or assassination by the cabal which you exposed their member.

Let me go and clean my whistle first...

What about illegal recruitment/employment by corporate and government establishments? If I help in uncovering such heinous acts, what will be my "5%" reward? 5% of the total slot?
Whether we like it or not, there are still ghostworkers in the system.

even the 5 percent is not a good idea...what if the money we are talking about is billion dollars? I wish the whistle blower can be protected and reward legally instead of this 5 percent thing

My simple advice to any potential whistle-blower: Remember we are in Nigeria, your life is more important than the 5% Government will give you. Once u r dead, dis Federal Govt will not take care of d people u leave behind(take a cue from d lives of a lot of our past heroes) and d probability of any justice being done is almost nil. While the 5% promised might be ok, is the government willing to and capable of provide protection for people? Where d life of d whistle blower is threatened or in danger, can the police protect and for how long? Take a cue from Rivers, its an example of how far politicians can go. There is no regard for life in Nigeria and bad people will do anything to protect themselves including ending the lives of potential threats. They will also most likely get away with it. What d federal Government should do is put policies in place that tackle police corruption, pay police men well, ensure their families are well taken care of, let them do their jobs the way they should and the whole country will rearrange itself.

Whistle blowing guide should be made public first.

Most corruption cases (except the non-litigative ones) take longer than 2 regimes of which political interest might have changed.

The rule of evidence should be well thought in whistle blowers' guide except we just want to set cheap enemies

Mrs Adeosun should also give enough spiritual protection in case of reprisal attacks from the spiritual realm

5% is low except in cases of billions. However, such can't motivate a whistleblower. If the supposed crook offer him more than 5%..let's say 20% of the looted funds? You think he will still blow whistle or na wind? grin

Hmmm....5 % is not enough... but 10% is fine... to be shared between you and your lawyer. Now the lawyer also becomes the bigger target "when corruption fights back".... so how much do you figure he will demand of the 10%? ... if he's veryyyyy reasonable he'll accept 50% minimum.... which brings you back to the very " 5% is not enough"....or even less.
