Drug Scarcity Hits Nigeria’s Healthcare Sector by Adesiji77: 10:22am On Dec 28, 2016 |
The restriction placed on 18 imported drugs by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is causing a marked scarcity of drugs in Nigerian pharmacy stores. NAFDAC recently placed a ban on Paracetamol tablets, Metronidazole tablets, Vitamin B Complex tablets, Co-trimoxazole tablets, Ferrous Sulphate tablets, Folic Acid tablets, and Magnisium Trisilicate, among others. http://www.businessdayonline.com/updated-drug-scarcity-hits-nigerias-healthcare-sector/ 1 Like |

Ishilove: Probably to encourage local production. Some govt hospitals here in Abuja now produce their local Paracetamol. Personally I won't take any of these locally produced drugs.... |

Ishilove: probably because paracetamol can be made locally - its widely available from emzor etc septrin , probably because there are so many fake variants. there was a lady up north on social media who died a horrible death from fake septrin personally, some 10 years ago, i bought septrin for a cough and woke up with a swollen face. i guess i should be happy it wasn't worse than that our media are sometimes daft or deliberately inciting people - most of the drugs listed can be synthesized locally without any issue |

oyb:My dear ehn, Emzor Septrin which is produced locally is not powerful so I don't blame people for preferring foreign made ones. As for the lady who died, she had a reaction. Something something syndrome |

Ishilove:Emzor septrin is very effective. The move is a welcome development. Local production of those drugs will help grow our economy. It's too bad that common drugs that can be formulated by our pharmacists are still being imported. You mean Stephen Johnson's syndrome (aka toxic epidermal necrolysis) 1 Like 1 Share |

While everyone supports local production, we should be fair to ourselves. The problem in Nigeria is our regulatory agencies - SON, NAFDAC, NCC, NERC, etc. They are worst than the biblical Judas Iscariot. They are after money and pursue same with all amount of effort. They would not hesitate to give certification even though they know that the product is fake provided the producer is a 'philanthropist' About 30% of death in our hospitals are caused by drugs - fake and outdated. |
