Mr. Ajebota, a hardworking, intelligent, smart and dedicated young man, was interviewed by the Company's Human Resource Manager (HRM). In the course of the interview, he was beaming with smiles; the type that could put one into trouble if deployed around someone feeling the fresh and undiluted pangs of recession. Perhaps, the HRM was having such as experience, he wondered. The interview had gone well and he was full of anxitement (anxiety + excitement) as he waited in the office lounge for the result of his interview, like a newly-wed virgin looking forward to her first night. The HRM soon invited him back into her office to deliver the news.

“You are hired,” she said with a lackadaisical attitude that gave AJ the impression that he had been imposed on her against her choice. "We open the office at 8am," she proceeded with a mischievous grin; "and the closing time?" AJ asked curiously. "You are free to go home anytime, once you are done with your work for the day;” the HRM responded with the same mischievous grin; just that the grin had somehow turned into a snigger and then into a sneer. AJ could not explain the graduation, neither was he certain if it was still appropriate to keep on smiling. He was no longer sure of what he was getting into, and for the first time in the course of his excitement, AJ felt sorry for himself in advance even though he was happy to be employed. After all, it is not easy to have been employed almost immediately after the mandatory service year. Most of his colleagues who had completed the service year with him were still languishing at home as they would likely be for a couple of years more; meanwhile, heaven had smiled on him with this great opportunity despite not knowing anyone or having any godfather. Anyway, the smell of bread or the sight of the bakery itself is better than no bread at all, he thought to himself by way of consolation...
