For many people, the end of the year signals the foreclosure of bad memories while the beginning of a New Year brings good fortune. For some, it is the completion of a new home, others cars, yet for some, it is promotion in their place of work.

However, for some families, the start of the year, especially on January 1 brings forth new babies which are seen as special. 2017 is no exception for some families as such babies are delivered to them.

Kaduna

In Kaduna, twins are delivered to the family of Malam Umar Abdulhamid and Malama Basira Umar at 6.06am on January 1, at the Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital, popularly called nursing home. The twin girls are named Hassana and Hussaina.

According to their mother, the girls who are the second children in the family weighed 2.5kg at birth when Daily Trust visited their home located along Mama Remi road in Kabala Doki, Kaduna. The children brought some recognition to the family when the Kaduna State Commissioner of Women Affairs, Hajiya Rabi Abdulsalam presented some items to the babies and described them as “bundles of joy.” She conveyed the greetings of the Kaduna State Government, noting that the “twins are a blessing to the state, especially coming at the beginning of the year and pray that we will witness a lot more bundles of joy as the year goes on.”

Bauchi

In Bauchi State, the baby of the year was born at the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi at 3:10 am on January 1, 2017. The wife of the state governor, Hajiya Hadiza Muhammad Abubakar promptly visited the child and mother, Amina Mohammed and presented gifts and welfare packages to them. She was accompanied by the Bauchi State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Asabe Hammah. The governor’s wife congratulated the mother and wished her and the baby long life and prosperity.

Anambra

In Anambra State, the wife of the governor, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, described the first baby of the year as a perfect gift to the state.

While receiving the baby boy delivered at 5.48 am on January 1, 2017 at St. Charles Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha, Mrs. Obiano expressed satisfaction that the baby, who weighed 4.5kg and the mother, were in stable condition. She said: “I have no doubt that this beautiful baby has brought some New Year blessing to our state. I’m sure this one will grow up, work hard and make positive impact.”

She presented diapers, soap, oil, beverages and cash to the baby’s mother, Mrs. Chidiebere Ayogu.

The father of the baby, Innocent Ayogu, an Onitsha-based businessman from Enugu Ezike, thanked the governor’s wife for her gesture.

Kwara

In Ilorin, Kwara State, three babies were delivered few minutes from each other at the General Hospital on January 1, 2017.

The first child was born two minutes after 12 am to Mrs Rashidat Abdul Kareem, while the other two followed later. The wife of state governor, Deaconess Omolewa Ahmed, in company of the Commissioner of Women Affairs, Hajiya Ayinke Saka visited the babies and their mothers and donated some gifts to them. They were shown the babies by the Matron of the Hospital, Mrs. Serifat Agunbiade.

Deaconess Ahmed noted that the visit was to ensure that the less privileged, especially women, celebrate the New Year in a happy mood.

The Commissioner also assured women of the government’s readiness to continue providing amenities to cater for them.
