Looking at the socio-political backwardness in Africa today, one may not be told that the so-called African states are just but amalgams. By their fruits, you shall know them. Whereas many nations of the world are planning on how to reach great heights, in Africa our major concern is how to fight and destroy one another in the same so-called country. We are still at the level of amalgams. This is the plain truth. This is where the colonial masters left us. They want us to remain there for their own economic and political gain. But are we fools to remain in this prison where they bound us together to die?

In African states today, we have ethnic sentiments rather than national spirit. In these amalgams, we have ethnic or group cliques in the name of political parties. These cliques come together in the name of political parties but only for the ethnic interest or the interest of the group in place of the nation. There is no nation. There is no national interest. Kani-Fayode reflecting on Nigeria in his article “Is Nigeria really one Nation”, puts it this way, “Is Nigeria a nation or is she a mere geographical expression? Is Nigeria anything more than a British fraud set up to serve the economic interests of the former colonial masters? If we fail to accept that we are still amalgams and if we do not decide very soon to come together to discuss on how to become nations, nursing the hope of any meaningful development in all African amalgams today will be just an illusion!
