Menstrual pain, also medically known as dysmenorrhoea, is an experience every woman of reproductive age dreads. For a handful of them, it is an experience that often leaves them physically and emotionally exhausted...a certified Debbie Downer on steroids! In fact, MP is the number one culprit of work or school-related absenteeism in about 10-15% of the female population.

Of course, because pain is a subjective experience, some women feel the cramps much more than others. Even so, there is no denying the fact that MP can prove excessively annoying and discomforting, especially during the first 48hrs of one's period.

While most women feel the pain at different levels, there are certain factors which make the cramps worse in some women than others. These factors are often daily habits popularly enjoyed by these women.

Without further ado, here are the 5 things you do that make your MP worse,

#1. Excess sugar consumption: many a young woman have a sweet tooth, especially when they are on. For some of them there is this powerful food-craving that overtakes them during their periods...very similar to the food-craving seen during pregnancy. Well, if sugar and other sweet food articles are what you crave during your periods, those foods are likely the cause of your severe MP. So you may want to severely reduce your sugar intake when you are on.

#2. Smoking during or before menstruation: yes, that famous stick of death also has, to its list of negatives, menstrual pain. Because the nicotine in the ciga functions as vasoconstrictor on blood vessels (i.e they shrink blood vessels and make them tighter and narrower), they reduce the blood flow to the uterine structures. And beacause of the reduced blood flow, more tissue death occurs leading to more release of chemicals which cause the cramps to occur. So if you are a diehard smoker or just started smoking, that ciga in your mouth is likely the cause of your recent severe MP.

#3. Coffee consumption: coffee is one of the commonest sources of caffeine. Caffeine is chiefly used as a neurostimulant i.e it increases alertness and wakefulness. But one of the side effects of caffeine is blood vessel vasoconstruction, just like the nicotinine in ciga. So while most people would rather die than not have that cup of dark, strong-smelling, and steamy coffee, you may want to tone down your consumption of it during your periods until you are dry.

#4. Over-stressing yourself: let me tell you something, people: too much stress can kill you or anyone else. But just before it does there are many harmful ways it affects your system, one of them being exarcebation of your MP. Personally, I FEEL MP is stressful enough. Don't make it worse by worrying yourself to death or adding unnecessary pessures (be it from the office, work, relationship, etc) on yourself. That time of the month is the time for you to just try and cool off. Let go all the worries.

#5. Eating foods that get you bloated easily: cheese, milk, ice cream (yes, even ice cream) cake, fatty meat, suya, junks, etc are some of the foods articles you want to avoid during your period because they make the MP worse. So instead of that temptingly delicious slab of fatty meat or that unbelievably tasty slice of cake, it is good practice to eat appropriate and light....fruits are usually a good choice of food at such a time.

Even though the above listed factors are not totally exhaustive, as there are other factors such as being obese, family history of MP, early age of menarche (first menstruation) and nulliparity (not bearing offsprings, they are the most easily modifiable. And as such they are factors that any woman can start working on right now for a less painful MP.

Thanks for reading!

Until another time,
