China Executes Two Over Role In Tainted Milk Scandal by donjon: 8:19am On Nov 25, 2009
China executed a dairy farmer and a milk salesman Tuesday for their roles in the sale of contaminated baby formula - severe punishments that Beijing hopes will assuage public anger, reassure importers and put to rest one of the country's worst food safety crises.
The men were the only people put to death in a scheme to boost profits by lacing milk powder with the industrial chemical melamine; 19 other people were convicted and received lesser sentences. At least six children died after drinking the adulterated formula, and more than 300,000 were sickened.
Beijing is eager to show it has responded swiftly and comprehensively to eliminate problems in its food production chain that have spawned protests at home and threatened its export-reliant economy. The milk powder contamination struck a nerve with the public because so many children were affected, but was only one in a series of product recalls and embarrassing disclosures of lax public health safeguards.

Melamine, which is used to make plastics and fertilizers, has also been found added to pet food, eggs and fish feed, although not in levels considered dangerous to humans. The chemical, which like protein is high in nitrogen, fooled inspectors. It can cause kidney stones and kidney failure.

Those crying foul on China killing 30 Nigerians for Crime should come read this, the same China could kill their own citizens for crimes. They governement knows it citizens. They know, only such harsh penalty can make an average Chinese frown from crime.

Kudos to chinese government

NOTHING will stop crime. But death penalty punishes and reduces it more satisfactorily and cost efficiently if applied well.

Death penalty doesn't give room to assuage the victim incase he is later found not guilty in an appellate court.

Then that is where the application of reasonable doubt should be applied judiciously.

Death penalty should be applied to only a small and limited set of evil cases. Josef Fritzl does not need asuasages with all the evidence on the floor. A politician with a salary of £20K a year owning properties worth £40m does not need asuasages. A bank robber caught at the scene of a crime where he has sprayed the area with bullets sporadically without respect for life does not need asuasages. A kidnapper collecting ransom and caught with a hostage that has identified him as his/her tormentor does not need asuasages.

Asuasages na just grammar to me.

Sagamite,

But the essence of justices is not to punish but to reform offenders. Honestly i have discovered that Penalty encourages crime cos the criminal minded beings believes that any crime worth death is worth trying.

Well, that is a fundamentally wrong essence practiced by some of the goody-two-shoes, holier-than-thou morons like the UK. As I keep on saying, we should not pratice an ideology just because whites practice or approve of it. As a matter of fact, I think it is stupid essence to practice as it has been proven over time that it does not work and is effort and cost intensive that normally spurs defiance and even ridicule from perpetrators of crime.

Justice should be primarily about punishment as a deterrent, reform should be an offer to minimise the punishment for those whose crime are not too evil. Basically the more effort you put to be a better person the more reduced your punishment should be until it reaches a threshold punishment level that is unfair for you to go below.

Punishment for crimes is very healing for most victims and their families as even if we don't achieve the result of changing criminals, at least they paid for their crimes. Justice would be stupid if they focus on reform (that normally fails) at the expense of full or sufficient punishment.

But their are some crimes that do not deserve even a chance of reform, and one of those is the attempt to profiteer by poisoning to death the defenceless public, especially babies.

No pity, kill the heartless mofos.

Sagamite,
u're 100% correct!

Lets oil our judiciary to start death penalty by 2010, or else an irate citizenry will start doing it for them!
Remember when french citizens beheaded their king becos the price of bread was too high?
It can still happen in the 21st century - nigerians are getting more angry, evry single day!
We will soon stop that "siddon look" attitude, & unleash our wrath on all these corrupt politicians.
