Today, Friday, 13th January 2016, google is celebrating a renowned Nigerian author, Flora Nwapa. This can be seen at the top image which appears on the google home page, just above the search engine icon.
Google through its home page sometimes celebrates notable personalities who have in one way contributed to humanity.
Flora Nwapa has a legacy of being the forerunner to a generation of African women writers. She is the first Nigerian woman writer and the first African woman to publish a novel through her Tata Press.
In 1966 her book, Efuru, Nwapa became Africa’s first internationally published female novel in the English language (Heinemann Educational Books).

Nwapa has been called the mother of modern African literature. She also is known for her governmental work in reconstruction after the Biafran War. In particular, she worked with orphans and refugees that were displaced during the war. Furthermore, she worked as a publisher of African literature and promoted women in African society.

Born 13 January 1931, in Oguta, Florence Nwanzuruahu Nkiru Nwapa, while never considering herself a feminist, is best known for recreating life and traditions from a woman’s viewpoint.


She saw her work as an intervention in an African literary culture where women were often portrayed from a male-centered perspective. She saw her novels as an attempt to think of African femininity beyond the idea of victimization.
She was tired of the way male writers represented African women in their novels. African women were more than simply poor traders, prostitutes, and unhappy wives. Writing her own novels allowed her to refashion African femininity through complex and multi-faceted characters.
As a writer, Nwapa drew inspiration from everywhere. Her writing was influenced by Achebe and Christopher Okigbo, who were also her close friends, but she also drew inspiration from Hemingway and Bernard Shaw.
Nwapa’s work inspired a generation of writers and thinkers, the most prominent of which is Chimamanda Adichie. Adichie has said that she owes her success as a writer to Nwapa’s pioneering work.

Great author. I remember reading "Efuru" in primary six as a youngster. Those were the days.

Heard she was also heavily involved in the rehabilitation of women and children after the Biafran war.

I guess Chimanmanda is continuing from where she stopped. Great women of Africa

Ehhn so because na laudable achievement you wan call her Nigerian abi? Una dey see una double standard of reasoning. If na drug trafficking scandal now una go dey shout Igbo, Biafra and all what not. Like it or not, She is IGBO and we're eternally proud of her and our being. Same way we claim all the drug traffickers both the ones alive, in jail and executed. It is not our fault, it is what happens when you're bombed, blockaded, and starved to death only for your wealth to be confiscated and you're given 20 pounds to start life afresh

They said we caused the war. Few military boys carried out a coup and the blood thirsty tribe killed our people. Awo supported the Aburi accord and later advised Gowon to do otherwise. Ojukwu had no choice but to defend his people. 244+ tribes against one tribe. Out of nothing they created things and formed a country. Foreign nations with their interest assisted the 244+ tribes to fight one tribe. Our Engineers created weapons and refined our oil. We matched stronger military to military. The very Awo had to advise Gowon to block foods for the innocent civilians. Ojukwu started the war to protect his people. In his judgement, there was no need to keep on the fight when his people started dying. He stopped the not because he was afraid nor because of hunger but because of his people. He was a brave soldier, educated and wealthy.
Awo made sure we got just twenty pounds irrespective of how much you had. Our properties were declared abandoned property.
50 years later, the property grabbers are suffering even amidst of plenty. The very Awo was jailed and he later took his life. The blood thirsty tribes are being paid in their own coin. The 244+ tribes are no better.
Today, no single tribe is more powerful than the Igbos in any human endeavour. Be it sports, education, entertainment, business and so on.
We are Igbos and Igbos we shall remain.
