Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has warned Nigerians of the challenges the country would face in the future if it continues to depend on oil for income.
Mr. Osinbajo, while speaking in Gbaramatu kingdom during a visit to Delta State on Monday, said that countries who buy oil from Nigeria are now devising alternative means of power such as solar and wind energy.
Therefore, “We must be smart and act intelligently and fast,” he said.
Mr. Osinbajo’s visit on Monday is part of his peace tour across oil producing communities in the Niger Delta.
The visits are part of the ongoing efforts of the Buhari administration to achieve a permanent resolution of the Niger Delta crisis which in 2016 reduced Nigeria’s oil output y half.
The vice president, who spoke to an enlarged crowd after a closed-door meeting with the Gbaramatu leaders at the palace of the Pere of Gbaramatu kingdom, Oboro Gbaraun II, said fire incidents that arose from pipeline vandalisation have killed thousands of people.
“In 2013 alone, there are over 3700 incidents of pipeline vandalisation. From January to June 2016, there were over 1447 incidents of vandalisation.
“The Niger Delta of today is one where aside environmental degradation, between 1998 and 2015, over 20,000 persons have died from fire incidents arising from breaching of the pipelines.
“To prepare for a great future for the Gbaramatu kingdom, three things must happen: we must recognise the unique environmental challenges the Niger Delta is facing, we must also recognise that the Niger Delta is a special economic zone for this nation so we must treat it as a special development zone.
“This means the federal government, state government, National Assembly, NDDC, civil societies representing Niger Delta must sit together and develop a plan for rapid development.
“There is no excuse for not planning together. The federal government cannot solve the problem of Niger Delta. It is impossible for the FG to do it alone. The state should devote substantial portion of its budget to this special project,” Mr. Osinbajo said.
He added that the PAN Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has submitted a concise list of 16 dialogue issues that will be extremely helpful in ascertaining the key development priorities.
“It is an important working document that represents an excellent road map to the future of Niger Delta,” the law professor said.
Mr. Osinbajo noted that the critical issue the federal government is concerned with is infrastructure.
“In the 2017 budget, we have provided for the commencement of the Lagos – Calabar rail way which will go through Delta. We are working with the Chinese on this project.
“When I leave here we will visit the site of the Maritime University. The president has directed the ministry of petroleum to work quick to see to the realisation of all of the objectives of implementing this crucial educational institution.
“Establishing this university has passed the second reading in the National Assembly and I know we have the commitment of the members of the national assembly to fast track this bill so that the maritime school will be completed as soon as possible,” he added.
The Maritime University is expected to commence fully in September.
Mr. Osinbajo said the university and other government projects cannot work without adequate revenue which is being hampered by pipeline vandalisation and militancy in the region.
“If there is no revenue, we are deceiving ourselves. There must be revenue and it can only come when there is peace. There should be commitment to peace.”
The Vice President also spoke on the necessary cleanup of contaminated oil producing communities in the Niger Delta.
“The Ogoni cleanup has been flagged off. For the cleanup not be a waste of money, we must enforce strict environmental standard for the oil producing companies. And all our communities must prevent vandalisation which is also a major source of environmental degradation.”

More and more countries are producing oil....and current projections indicate that oil prices are not going back to $100 and above.

And then there are the advances in green tech.

We are already living in a world where oil would soon become less important. We better adapt fast.

Those militants doesn't understand your grammar Mr. VP. The government failed in discharging there responsibility during oil boom and people of Niger Delta were neglected. There are oil spill in most if there waters when the government already know there source of income is through fishing.

My advise to the militants is that they should just continue to blow up the pipe lines until those present and past leaders were able to cough out the monies meant for the development of the areas.

My candid opinion though.

The VP is right, but alas this is what they have been saying from the campaign period till now. When will the action begin?

At 56, it will not be far from the truth if one concludes that Nigeria remains a crawling toddler. This is largely because we have always preferred the easy route to greatness. Our Independence was more or less got on a platter of gold. As if that was not enough, we suddenly struck oil. Thus, began a life of misplaced allure and grandeur. At the height of our nation’s stupendous oil wealth, a former Head of State was quoted to have said that: “Money is not Nigeria’s problem but how to spend it”. Thus, we virtually squandered our oil wealth. Today, there is trouble in the global oil market.

Thus, unlike what the rookie Head of State had affirmed, money has now become our nation’s problem. Most states cannot pay salaries. The Federal Government cannot fund its budget. Companies are downsizing. From all indications, trouble is here. Yet, at 56, trouble and more troubles are what we actually need to get our act together. Most of the developed world democracies thrive under difficult situations and conditions. Ours cannot not be an exception.

Current trouble times, if well-managed, could, indeed, be a blessing in disguise. The lull in the international price of oil could be an opportunity for us to eventually focus on the non-oil sector upon which our fore fathers built the nation’s prosperity. The Niger Delta militants have also shown us that unless we allow true federalism, we are wasting our time expecting the usual oil production. Now that we are groaning under severe economic burden is the exact time to pay adequate attention to other sectors where unlimited opportunities for job and wealth creation as well as accelerated economic and industrial growth abound.

We could take a cue from the nation of Israel which turned a huge geographical adversity into gains to become a renowned global agro-economy. We could also draw huge lessons from China which bounced back from a great famine that took millions of lives between 1958 and 1961 to become the world numero uno in food production. The Singaporean model as illustrated by the late pioneer Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, has equally shown us that bumpy roads are crucial necessities for national rebirth.

Other than rhetoric, does the VP and the rest of his friends in government have a blueprint for the nation at this time? We don't have a positive answer judging from the activities of the last 20 months.

Talk talk talk .... even the unborn babies know that we have to move away from an oil dependent economy. The government should be implementing their actions for a more diverse economy.

So Osibanjo flew all the way to Delta to tell us what we already knew?
"Our government is going to do so and so for the area. So, militants just chill."
Don't forget this was the same government whose initial agenda was declare war on the zone. For the first time, those of us living in Warri saw sophisticated military equipment. If those equipment were deployed to the north east, bokoharam would have been history.

And how, commissioner Osibanjo comes here to ditch out more threats insulting our collective sensibility as a people.

This recent visit is still a waste. Why did Buhari not come by himself? Surely, he couldn't disguise his hatred for a people whose land powered the entire nation.

The worse part is,,, all this rubbish Osibanjo said were his personal opinion. Just fulfilling all righteousness. Buhari's artileries are ever ready to boom! Osibanjo, being a foolish wise man, just asked him to pause. "let me go and talk to them". No sincerity of purpose. Every thing is politics.

Mine is if after 56 years of independence, Nigeria cannot provide uninterrupted power supply to her citizens. Then she's as good as good for nothing.

From 12 noon to 4pm. I burnt 10 liters of petrol, in the evening I'll do same with diesel.

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced that he would buy monkeys for N100 each. The villagers seeing that there were so many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them.

The man bought thousands at N100 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their efforts. He further announced that he would now buy at N200. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to N250 but the supply of monkeys became so little that it took much effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch one.

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at N500! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on his behalf.

In the absence of the man, his assistant told the villagers: ''Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that my OGA has bought from you, I will sell them to you at N350 and when my OGA returns from the city, you can sell it to him at N500''.

The villagers squeezed out all their HARD EARNED savings and bought all the monkeys. The most greedy ones among them even sold their lands to purchase many MONKEYS, hoping to make a huge profit without labor.

Then...

They never saw the man or his assistant. Only monkeys everywhere!

Welcome to #MMM.
