Wema Bank Plc says it has launched a solar-powered mobile branch to make banking services available to everyone in all parts of the country.

Mr Damola Bolodeoku, the bank’s Head of eBusiness, in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, said the mobile branch was fitted with two automated teller machines (ATM).

According to Bolodeoku, the mobile branch tagged: “Wema Bank on Wheels”, will bring convenient banking services to Nigerians at their door step in line with global best practices, using technology.

“We are taking banking services to Nigerians, no matter where they are.

“Being an environmentally-responsible company, our mobile branch is powered by solar energy – a first in the Nigeria’s banking industry.

“Banks around the world have often used mobile banking vehicles as a cost-effective service delivery channel as competition becomes stiffer.

“As such, every financial institution strives to provide their customers with the latest technology-driven services,” Bolodeoku said.

Kemi Aina, Head, Customer Service Management, said the recent closure of the bank’s branch in Abule Egba due to road construction fast-tracked the mobile services.

Aina stressed that “Wema Bank on Wheels’’ would help to reach Nigerians who missed out through “our internet banking and USSD banking services.”

The most reasonable factor for this might be cost containment, cos the cost of maintaining electricity generators with fueling can immediately cripple any novel and stand-alone innovation in our present Nigeria.

Solar is a clean energy source tho.

Great

If a country like Canada with an average of 5 months long winter could have solar powered buildings and street lights. I don't see the reason why solar panels shouldn't be flying on many buildings and streets in Nigeria

This is not new 'nau', GTBank, FirstBank, EcoBank, have gone past this stage long ago so what the big deal, what I expect them to say is that they have learned from the errors of those others why we are not seeing those mobile ATMs at remote villages and ceremonies like trade fair, crusade and sporting fiesta.

Mobile branch is not new so they have not added value other than some sharp guys have cornered some big deals and traveling abroad for estacode unto say they are going for quality assurance and training. Anyway congrats for joining the fray.
